The Demand Driven Material Requirements Planning (DDMRP) is a production control system originally tailored for the VUCA world. Despite research increasingly focusing on the dynamic aspects of this production control system, it has failed to address important execution aspects. This study bridges the literature gap by focusing on Demand Driven Planning and Execution, particularly the dispatching rules. The use of static dispatching rules, such as the one proposed in DDMRP, does not respond to the volatility and uncertainty of the VUCA world. Through the simulation of a six-machine flow shop, we investigate several dispatching rules to assess their impact on the system stability and service level. Our findings reveal that, when compared to a static dispatching rule, the use of a dynamic dispatching rule in the DDMRP execution significantly improves the service level and reduces the number of stockouts and the time to fulfill backorders.

This paper provides the result of a global qualitative open-question survey into the barriers and enablers of Lean Industry 4.0. The key barrier identified were financial constraints and the key enabler was the various Industry 4.0 technologies. However, outside this, the barriers and enablers are mainly concerned with people, management and change management. The paper also examines how these factors change for respondents from organizations with different levels of maturity in Lean and Industry 4.0. It was found that financial resources were the most important barriers for advanced Lean and Industry 4.0 organizations with change management more important for highLean, low Industry 4.0 firms and engagement and alignment for low Lean, high Industry 4.0 firms. The use of the various Industry 4.0 technologies was the most important enabler for the most advanced Lean and Industry 4.0 organizations, with high Lean, low Industry 4.0 more unsure of the most important enabler and for low Lean, high Industry 4.0, engagement and alignment was the most cited enabler. These findings provide both academia, industry and third party providers such as government agencies and Universities the most detailed and scaled insights into barriers and enablers within Lean Industry 4.0. It also shows the linkage between the two and provides insights into the higher level of importance of change management, people resources and the role of leaders than had been cited in earlier work.

Password management has long been a persistently challenging task. This led to the introduction of password management software, which has been around for at least 25 years in various forms, including desktop and browser-based applications. This work assesses the ability of two dozen password managers, 12 desktop applications, and 12 browser plugins, to effectively protect the confidentiality of secret credentials in six representative scenarios. Our analysis focuses on the period during which a Password Manager (PM) resides in the RAM. Despite the sensitive nature of these applications, our results show that across all scenarios, only three desktop PM applications and two browser plugins do not store plaintext passwords in the system memory. Oddly enough, at the time of writing, only two vendors recognized the exploit as a vulnerability, reserving CVE-2023-23349, while the rest chose to disregard or underrate the issue.

This paper addresses the application of neural networks in resource constrained edge-devices. The goal is to achieve a speedup both in inference and training time, with minimal accuracy loss. More specifically, it brings to light the need for compressing current models, which are mostly developed with access to more resources that the device that the model will potential run on. With the recent advances of Internet of Things(IoT) the number of devices has and is expected to rise. Not only are these devices computationally limited, but their capabilities are nor homogeneous nor predictable at the time of the development of a model, as new devices can be added anytime. This creates the need to quickly and efficiently produce models that fit each devices specifications. Transfer learning is a very efficient method, in terms of training time, but confines the user to the dimensionality of the pretrained model. Pruning is used as a way to overcome this obstacle and carry over knowledge to a variety of model, that differ in size. The aim of this paper is to serve as an introduction to pruning as a concept, as a template for further research, quantify the efficiency of a variety of methods and expose some of it's limitations. Pruning was performed on a telecommunications anomaly dataset and the results were compared to a baseline, in regards to speed and accuracy.

News sentiment is attracting considerable interest in stock market prediction, given its crucial role in shaping stock prices. Previous research has mainly focused on improving prediction accuracy by exploiting news sentiment, without adequately considering the different levels of attention that individual news articles receive. Furthermore, despite the advanced predictive capabilities of deep learning models, there has been a lack of focus on the interpretability of these models, leading to predictions that are not transparent. This study presents an innovative prediction model that integrates a FinBERT-based analysis of news sentiment and investor attention metrics with an attention-based Temporal Fusion Transformer framework. This approach not only enables highly effective forecasting, but also provides insights into the temporal dynamics that influence the stockmarket. The effectiveness of the model is demonstrated by analyzing stock price data for 41 of the largest market capitalization companies over the period 2010 to 2021. The results confirm the superiority of the proposed model over existing deep learning approaches, and the attention analysis underscores the critical role of synthesizing news sentiment and attention metrics in predicting stock prices.

Retailing is an important part of the supply chain, the link at which money is transferred from the consumer and flows to upstream trading partners. However, retailing has received very little attention from researchers in terms of developing quantitative models that are used in the rest of the supply chain. This paper proposes analytical and computational models based on queuing theory and discrete-event simulation, respectively, for in-store shopper journeys. Specifically, based on empirical data from retail stores, we propose a M/G/infinity and M-t/G/c queues in tandem to model the shopping process and the checkout process to characterize key aspects of shopper journeys. Such an analytical model is probably the very first of its kind proposed to mathematically characterize retailing and offers prospects for enabling better understanding and decision-making in this multi-trillion-dollar industry. A key advantage of such analytical models is that they can provide quick answers to questions such as average customer waiting times at checkout for different levels of staffing, which is an important issue in customer service vs staffing cost. A shortcoming of such analytical models is that they are based on assumptions therefore their output has limited accuracy, and these models cannot predict variance in the output. To overcome these shortcomings, this paper presents ShopperSim, which is a stand-alone discrete-event simulation software being developed using SimPy, a Python library, to simulate shopper journeys in a variety of store formats. To ensure practical relevance of these developments, ShopperSim has been programmed to statistically reproduce empirically observed shopping time, basket size, and store area covered - key attributes for shopper journeys. Tests indicate that ShopperSim can reproduce empirically observed statistics of key attributes for shopper journeys. This paper presents a serious game for the implementation of a robot in high variety/low volume (HVLV) production environments. Students and practitioners are able to experience and reflect on the complexity of integrating a robot solution in HVLV production processes. By simulating a production environment, players experience how to assemble an increasing variety of products, transport parts and products, visualize information flows and perform quality checks. During the game, the players are challenged to determine which process step needs to be automated. They experience the challenges of integrating a robot and determine how to overcome these challenges. Aspects regarding the reconsideration of process design, standardization, product design and information provision are analysed with the aim of reducing waste as much as possible. Results from a small sample of robotics experts and students show that the I-Robot game is fun and insightful. In addition, the pre-defined learning outcomes seem to be well reflected in the game. This 90-min serious game can be used in a wide range of courses and training programs, is low-tech and allows the players to focus completely on the integration within the process and systems and not solely on the technical possibilities of the robot itself.

With 5394 security certificates of IT products and systems, the Common Criteria for information technology Security Evaluation have bred an ecosystem entangled with various kind of relations between the certified products. Yet, the prevalence and nature of dependencies among Common Criteria certified products remains largely unexplored. This study devises a novel method for building the graph of references among the Common Criteria certified products, determining the different contexts of references with a supervised machine-learning algorithm, and measuring how often the references constitute actual dependencies between the certified products. With the help of the resulting reference graph, this work identifies just a dozen of certified components that are relied on by at least 10% of the whole ecosystem - making them a prime target for malicious actors. The impact of their compromise is assessed and potentially problematic references to archived products are discussed.

Crisis situations ask for relevant, accurate and complete information to support decision makers. Today there is a plethora of systems available to crisis responders to generate, accumulate and process information. These systems and (infra) structures are often developed, established, and implemented outside crisis situations as part of preparedness activities. At the same time, crisis situations are often characterized by their volatility and uncertainty. Both in terms of the effects of the disaster, but also in the response to the disaster, and often require a tailored approach. In this research we examine trade-offs between the preparedness of information systems, and the flexibility needed to adapt to operational and crisis specific circumstances. We conduct this research through case studies centered around two large-scale emergencies and discuss the challenges in managing the 'rigidity-adaptability' balance for emergency responders.
