Industries across the world are witnessing profound technological paradigm changes, necessitating a new set of engineering skills and capabilities for the future workforce. This paper investigates the needed engineering competencies required to bridge the skill gap related to Industry 5.0. Our work analyses current educational frameworks on the topic and proposes a new concept based on the exploitation of learning factories. The paper showcases the conception, execution, and evaluation of a summer school program dedicated to such an objective. It discusses the structure, methodologies, and outcomes of this course, demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed didactic framework. The findings offer valuable insights for educators and industry professionals alike in preparing the future workforce for the challenges and opportunities of Industry 5.0.

In the field of commodity encrypted communications, the problems related to privacy and security are rather complicated to solve. Debates around them have been persistent since the civilian use of modern cryptography. Governments have emphasized the challenges to law enforcement posed by strong cryptography, while a heterogeneous community of security and policy experts has advocated for the widespread application of cryptography to safeguard privacy rights. Framed as the "Crypto Wars" between the tech community and the intelligence community, actors who adopt this framing are anxious about the outcome of the "Wars". Participants of the debate have brought forward solutions such as key escrow, exceptional access, and client-side scanning to settle the disputes, and scholars have provided policy advice to end the "Wars" with minimal loss of democratic values. Despite these inputs, the "Wars" remain. In view of the security nature of the encryption debate and its intricacy, I draw on securitization theory from critical security studies and the concept of "controversy" from science and technology studies (STS) to dissect the matters across social, technical, and political perspectives. Shifting away from the "Crypto Wars" framing, I approach the debate with digital security controversy analysis by engaging with the competing claims about encryption and mapping them to the normative conflicts over security logics. This paper serves as a resource for interdisciplinary readers, aiding them in grasping the underlying contestations within the ongoing debates over encrypted communications.

This study explores the case of servitization in building technology from three perspectives: market, organizational, and technological. This paper draws upon findings from a single case study of a multinational manufacturer of piping systems. Products with advanced technological solutions, a comprehensive portfolio of products and services, and partnering are enablers for offering product-service bundles in the building technology sector. Furthermore, the development of a consultative sales approach, adaptations to the organizational structure, and internal collaborations could foster the provision of more service-oriented solutions. This paper contributes new insights concerning the specific contextual factors surrounding servitization, including product, market, and organizational aspects, as well as their implications for manufacturers in the building technology sector.

In the era of escalating customer demands for tailored products, advancements in intelligent manufacturing technologies and the proliferation of diverse production and operational models, production-logistics systems face heightened internal and external disruptions. This work contributes a novel dynamic multi-objective opti-state decision-making framework and method to address the complex decision-making challenges that arise from such disruptions. It delves into the re-decision-making requirements for maintaining optimal state performance in production-logistics systems amidst disturbances, focusing on operational objectives. The proposed method employs intelligent algorithms for local sub-models, utilizing the gray target theory to determine the best dynamic multi-objective optimization strategy. To demonstrate its practicality, the method is instantiated as an intermittent synchronized production operation system, with a case study in the context of enterprises with intermittent production, validating the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Blockchain technology is increasingly gaining attention from practitioners and academics in supply chain management due to its potential to enhance transparency, efficiency, and trust among trading partners. This study explores the impact of blockchain deployment on supply chain collaboration (SCC), with a focus on information sharing, trust, and commitment. Through a multiple case study of six companies, we found that while blockchain enhances information sharing by facilitating digital transformation in the supply chain, concerns about data privacy pose significant challenges. Moreover, blockchain technology can foster trust through immutable record keeping and automated smart contracts, alleviating concerns related to data tampering and enhancing the reliability of transactions. Commitment within SCC is also influenced by blockchain, as it requires joint investment in specific assets, thereby strengthening partnerships. However, asymmetric willingness to adopt blockchain, especially among smaller supply chain participants, may undermine these benefits. Our findings provide valuable insights into the strategic implementation of blockchain in supply chains and highlight the crucial balance needed between technology adoption and stakeholder engagement.

Naval engagements, though rare, present complex challenges for data-driven machine learning due to their intricate dynamics and the scarcity of empirical evidence. These conflicts are well-represented within the framework of Partially Observable Stochastic Games (POSG), which models the adversarial interactions between contending forces through decision-making agents, possible states, actions, observations, and probabilistic state transitions. This research delineates the implementation of Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning (MARL) algorithms, particularly Double Deep Q-Networks (DDQN) and Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO), in navigating the complexities inherent in strategic naval operations. Despite the operational challenges encountered, the findings of this study underscore the effectiveness of MARL in formulating and assessing tactical strategies. This contributes substantially to the enhancement of tactical planning and the introduction of novel strategic paradigms. Significantly, this investigation illuminates the transformative potential of MARL in naval strategy and decision-making processes, asserting its pivotal role in contemporary warfare analysis. This study not only confirms the applicability of MARL in complex scenarios but also highlights its capacity to revolutionize traditional approaches to military strategy.

Emerging challenges in the manufacturing industry, such as supply chain disruptions, political instability, and difficulty in accessing skilled workforce necessitate a more pragmatic approach to survive in this highly intertwined ecosystem. These approaches aim to empower manufacturing companies' efficiency and agility while providing a certain degree of resilience. Hence, collaboration among stakeholders by sharing manufacturing resources and information is vital. However, despite the advancements in digital platforms for collaborative manufacturing, there is a need for effective planning of shared resources which is computationally intractable. Approaching this challenging problem from a multi-agent perspective brings new opportunities for modeling and solving. In a collaborative manufacturing network, as a multi-agent system, each manufacturing stakeholder, or agent, can pursue their objective, such as minimizing production time, reducing costs, or improving product quality while a coordinator agent monitors and ensures a solution that is best for all agents. This paper proposes systematic and heuristic methods for planning and scheduling collaborative manufacturing resources using a multi-agent modeling paradigm. The efficiency of the developed methods is benchmarked with randomly generated instances that show promising results for the manufacturing industry.

Item recommendation for users is a salient feature of many transaction-based systems. Finding the most appropriate items is crucial for both marketing and analytical perspectives. The latest works focus on ranking-based personalized recommenders. However, they recommend the same number of items for everyone and still suffer from the interaction sparsity issue. We propose a complex-graph-oriented supervised learning-based link prediction with a realistic negative sampling application for overcoming these problems. We employ the power-law degree distribution property of the complex graphs to sample the negative instances. The experiments show that our method outperforms ranking-based personalized recommenders with a 20% increase in recommendation success in multiple evaluation metrics.

Digital servitization is increasingly relevant for competitiveness and long-term sustainability in several industrial sectors. Firms with capital assets and long lifespans have been documented as promising candidates for maximizing the value of resource-efficient operations and lifecycle extension opportunities. This paper investigates the conceptual overlap of asset lifecycle management and digital servitization in the context of machining in industry to maximize resource efficiency and lifecycle extension. While existing literature primarily focuses on early-stage strategic planning, this study emphasizes the significance of decision-making during the use phase of assets, highlighting the need for a balanced allocation of resources between late-stage decisions and early strategic planning, to capture sustainable value. This study presents a map of strategic options that connect levels of digital servitization and eco-efficiency principles across an asset's lifecycle. By exemplifying through a case study, the results of this paper include a mapping of scenarios highlighting the importance of integrating digital servitization and asset lifecycle management strategies to achieve improved sustainability in industrial settings.

Process design kits (PDKs) and their robustness verification are pivotal to a semiconductor foundry's growth and customer retention. This paper presents an extended version of our automated PDK quality assurance (QA) platform, initially introduced to maintain production-quality PDKs deployable at any time. The platform utilizes continuous integration and continuous delivery tools to detect and resolve problems early, significantly reducing the time required for pre-release PDK verification. We have embedded this QA platform into the PDK verification flow for 0.13 mu m and 0.25 mu m SiGe BiCMOS technologies, ensuring reliable on-demand PDK releases. Additionally, we extend our discussion to include the results viewer application that enhances identification and organization of the issues across various PDKs, further improving verification efficiency. This paper also introduces a new analysis of the trend in PDK issues reported by customers, illustrating the platform's effectiveness in quality assurance and optimization of the PDK development process for semiconductor technologies. The enhanced features and insights detailed in this paper reinforce our approach and highlight significant improvements in interoperable PDK verification, utilizing previously released PDKs as benchmarks.
