The goal of many organizations of today is optimization of business process management. A factor for optimization of business processes is reduction of costs associated with mass production and customer service. Recently, an approach to incorporate batch activities in process models was proposed to improve the process performance by synchronizing a group of process instances. However, the issue of optimal utilization of batch activities and estimation of associated costs remained still open. In this paper, we present an approach to evaluate batch activity performance, based on techniques from queuing theory. Thus, cost functions are introduced in order to (1) compare usual (i.e., non-batch) and batch activity execution and (2) find the optimal configuration of a batch activity. The approach is applied to a real-world use case from the healthcare domain.

This paper describes management strategies for continuous improvement in agile software development teams. We have applied these strategies in a Brazilian team, which was born in 2009 and now grew into a headquarter of the company with ninety people. We have currently reached lean flow state with constant throughput, reduced lead time and enhanced quality by cutting bugs rate in half. In a continuous improvement cycle, our management strategies are based on looking at the situation, sensemaking the situation and providing simple responses. We describe how we applied these strategies to learn how to correctly limit work in progress (WIP) and to face challenges with coaching, estimates, team motivation, sprints and pair programming.

The capability of an enterprise modeling approach to support the provision of knowledge on selected aspects of an enterprise may be apprehended as its explanatory capability. We argue that this capability encompasses two aspects: the capability to represent "the things happening in an enterprise" and the 'self-explanatory' capability that relates to the understandability of the approach and the resulting models. In this paper, we propose an analysis framework that can be used to assess the explanatory capabilities of enterprise modeling approaches. The framework is structured according to the four explanatory causes of Aristotle. We demonstrate the applicability of the framework by analyzing three selected enterprise modeling approaches.

Comparing software systems for a purchase decision in a highly regulated public procurement process is a new domain for usability testing. We performed a comparative summative usability evaluation of Current Research information Systems (CRIS) as a part of a public procurement process in Finland, EU. The evaluation method had to provide objective and unbiased results for comparison and it had to be defined in detail already in the invitation to tender. In this paper, we report the details of our successful procedure that enabled straightforward and quick decision making in selecting the winning system. Additionally, we present calculations to legitimate the potentially higher investment costs through estimated savings and increased income.

Without search engines the information content of theWorld Wide Web would remain largely closed for the ordinary user. Current web search engines work well as long as the user knows what she is looking for. The situation becomes problematic, if the user has insufficient expertise or prior knowledge to formulate the search query. Often a sequence of search requests is necessary to answer the user's information needs, whenever knowledge has to be accumulated first to determine the next search query. On the other hand, retrieval systems for traditional archives face the problem that there is possibly not always a result for an arbitrary search query, simply because of the limited number of documents available. Semantic search systems (try to) determine the meaning of the content of the archived documents first and thus in principle are able to overcome problems of traditional keyword-based search engines concerning the processing of natural language. Moreover, content-based relationships among the documents can be used to filter, navigate, and explore the archive. Content-based 'intelligent' recommendations help to open up the archive and to discover new paths across the search space.

Contextualization: CrossCutting Concerns (CCC) or Early-Aspects consist of software concerns that are spread and/or tangled with requirements of other concerns and can be treated by Aspect-Oriented Requirements Engineering (AORE). Problem: several AORE approaches have been proposed, however, some experimental studies have found problems regarding to the accuracy of these approaches. According to the authors of these studies these problems occur, due to: (i) the lack of knowledge presented by the users of these approaches about the crosscutting nature of CCC;and (ii) the lack of resources to support users of these approaches during the CCC identification. Goal: this work aims to improve the CCC identification accuracy from the support of domain ontologies. Hence, an ontology for the CCC domain was proposed and the Theme/Doc AORE approach was extended aiming to make it suitable for the usage of this ontology. As results, a preliminary experimental study showed a significant increasing of the recall of the extended approach, without negative effects on the precision and execution time of it.

A successful software project is the result of a complex process involving, above all, people. Developers are the key factors for the success of a software development process and the Agile philosophy is developer-centred. Developers are not merely executors of tasks, but actually the protagonists and core of the whole development process. This paper aims to investigate social aspects among developers working together and the appeal of a software project developed with the support of Agile tools such as Agile boards. We studied 14 open source software projects developed using the Agile board of the JIRA repository. We analysed all the comments committed by the developers involved in the projects and we studied whether the politeness of the comments affected the number of developers involved over the years and the time required to fix any given issue. Our results show that the level of politeness in the communication process among developers does have an effect on the time required to fix issues and, in the majority of the analysed projects, it has a positive correlation with attractiveness of the project to both active and potential developers. The more polite developers were, the less time it took to fix an issue, and, in the majority of the analysed cases, the more the developers wanted to be part of project, the more they were willing to continue working on the project over time.

We introduce the need for a distributed guideline-based decision support (DSS) process, describe its characteristics, and explain how we implemented this process within the European Union's MobiGuide project. In particular, we have developed a mechanism of sequential, piecemeal projection, i.e., 'downloading' small portions of the guideline from the central DSS server, to the local DSS in the patient's mobile device, which then applies that portion, using the mobile device's local resources. The mobile device sends a callback to the central DSS when it encounters a triggering pattern predefined in the projected module, which leads to an appropriate predefined action by the central DSS, including sending a new projected module, or directly controlling the rest of the workflow. We suggest that such a distributed architecture that explicitly defines a dialog between a central DSS server and a local DSS module, better balances the computational load and exploits the relative advantages of the central server and of the local mobile device.

In the context-based image retrieval, the textual information surrounding the image plays a central role for ranking returned results. Although this technique outperforms content-based approaches, it may fail when the query keywords does not match the textual content of many documents containing relevant images. In addition, users are usually not experts and provide ambiguous queries that lead to heterogeneous results. To solve these problems, researchers are trying to re-rank primary results using other techniques such as query expansion, concept-based retrieval, etc. In this paper, we propose to use LDA topic model to re-rank results and therefore improve retrieval precision. We apply this model in two levels: global level represented by the whole document containing the image and local level represented by the paragraph containing an image (considered as a specific textual information for the image). Results show a significant improvement over the standard text retrieval approach by re-ranking with the LDA model applied to the local level.
