Traditional commercial and retail banks are under great pressure from new competitors. They must rise to the challenges of understanding their customer actions and behaviors, and be ready to meet their expectations even before they explicitly express them. But the ability to know customers' demands in nearly real-time requires the evolution of existing architectures to support the detection, notification, and processing of business events to manage business information streams. This paper describes a practical experience in evolving a core banking enterprise architecture by leveraging business event exploitation, and includes the definition of business events;the design of a reference architecture and its integration points with the legacy architecture, as well as the description of an initial governance approach. Furthermore, as the core banking architecture is a critical infrastructure we have evaluated the performance of the evolved architecture so as to understand whether or not it can meet the banks' quality levels.

In order to help businesses to communicate fruitfully, we present a solution based on ontology alignment for integrating business documents. We focus on detecting and resolving semantic conflicts encountered during the integration process due to different terminologies used in xCBL, cXML and RosettaNet. Our contribution is to benefit from research in the ontology alignment area and considered as empirical study to test if alignment solution can overcome the heterogeneity problems between business systems. As case study, we apply alignment on purchase order ontologies, a common task of the supply chain.

This chapter proposes a model how to setup IT supported interorganisational collaboration in the current world where IT and business collaboration is intertwined. businesses have been struggling to achieve supply chain integration for both technical and organizational reasons. This hinders effective collaboration with partners: vertical collaboration with suppliers and customers, as well as horizontal collaboration with competitors. This paper gives a literature overview of the current challenges within supply chain collaboration. The suggested Enterprise Connectivity Interface approach is inspired on the popular API model that enables connectivity between software systems. We reflect how such quick connectivity can be applied also on a business level.

Open-Source Software (OSS) community members report bugs, request features or clarifications by writing messages (in unstructured natural language) to mailing lists. Analysts examine them dealing with an effort demanding and error prone task, which requires reading huge threads of emails. Automated support for retrieving relevant information and particularly for recognizing discussants' intentions (e.g., suggesting, complaining) can support analysts, and allow them to increase the performance of this task. Online discussions are almost synchronous written conversations that can be analyzed applying computational linguistic techniques that build on the speech act theory. Our approach builds on this observation. We propose to analyze OSS mailing-list discussions in terms of the linguistic and non-linguistic acts expressed by the participants, and provide a tool-supported speech-act analysis method. In this paper we describe this method and discuss how to empirically evaluate it. We discuss the results of the first execution of an empirical study that involved 20 subjects.

Management of block storage virtualization systems in large environments can become very complex. For standard management tasks, such as the creation and maintenance of disk arrays, and problem isolation, specialized storage management tools are used. Such tools must query the storage virtualization system for topologies and performance statistics, correlating this information with external sources and defined policies, and providing an interface for the storage administrators. By using ontologies as information models in a storage management tool, correlation of elements, aggregation and querying becomes a lot more flexible and configurable. In this paper we present an ontology-based architecture that serves as backend for a storage management tool. We describe the approach and performance optimizations and give an evaluation of the prototypical implementation.

business process modeling is an important task for supporting business process management. One challenge of process modeling is the diversity of expertise from novice modelers to expert designers, which defines the need to provide different sorts of guidance during modeling. In this paper, we discuss these expertise differences based on the cognitive load theory and present an experiment that tested how people with different levels of expertise work with different instructional material presented as automatic feedback of a tool. Our conclusions suggest that guidance on reworking models needs to take different levels of expertise into account.

Soundness property is an important criterion which needs to be satisfied when treating workflow processes. However, a significant part of industrial business process models is not in fact sound, which can lead to deadlock situations due to message ordering mismatches, for example. In order to avoid deadlock situation in interorganizational business processes, an approach based on Siphon structures, possibilistic Petri nets and interorganizational WorkFlow nets is proposed. A deadlock situation is characterized by an insufficiently marked Siphon. Possibilistic Petri nets with uncertainty on the marking and on the transition firing are used to ensure the existence of at least one transition firing sequence enabling the completion of the process without encountering the deadlock situation. Routing patterns and communication protocols that exist in business processes are modeled by interorganizational WorkFlow nets. Combining these formalisms, a kind of possibilistic WorkFlow net is obtained.

Schema matching and mapping are an important tasks for many applications, such as data integration, data warehousing and e-commerce. Many algorithms and approaches were proposed to deal with the problem of automatic schema matching and mapping. In this work, we describe how schema matching problem can be modelled and simulated as agents where each agent learn, reason and act to find the best match in the other schema attributes group. Many differences exist between our approach and the existing practice in schema matching. First and foremost our approach is based on the paradigm Agent-based Modeling and Simulation (ABMS), while, as far as we know, all the current methods do not use ABMS paradigm. Second, the agent's decision-making and reasoning process leverages probabilistic models (Bayesian) for matching prediction and action selection (planning). The results we obtained so far are very encouraging and reinforce our belief that many intrinsic properties of our model, such as simulations, stochasticity and emergence, contribute efficiently to the increase of the matching quality and thus the decrease of the matching uncertainty.

This work presents a unified modelling approach based on two declarative models which integrates event-and entity-driven paradigms while preserving a clear separation of concerns between their executions. The proposed approach provides business users with a unified model that is both sufficiently equipped to capture the inherent complexity of realistic business operations, and still enables gaining a complete overview of the entire business arena. This was attained building upon the business-entity-model and the-event-model as two complementary modeling paradigms yielding the BE2 model. In this paper we describe how these two models have been systematically unified using an ontological formalism as a common conceptual baseline. The approach also derives a set of modeling guidelines to preserve the consistency across the two specifications. We demonstrate the actual instantiation of the proposed BE2 model in the Transport and Logistics domain.

We propose a demand response privacy preserving interaction and intermediary protocol design (DPIP) using a trusted third party design to facilitate the collection of Smart Metering data and to perform Demand Response while preserving the privacy of residential customers in the Smart Grid. DPIP relies on intermediaries hiding customer program participation from Demand Response Aggregators (DRA) and thus enhance their anonymity and it provides individualized privacy preserved billing. This is the first of a series of papers. Its focus is the protocol, while following work discusses the role of differential privacy.
