In many local festivals and in events such as pop concerts or sporting events, crowds might generate dangerous situations like the case of panic stampedes. How to anticipate these situations is challenging. Despite there are simulation models of people motion, it is very difficult to predict real people behavior. In this paper, we advocate the application of digital twins to monitor and analyze real people motion. We implement the Artax framework, which stores people movements as traces through time. We describe the current state of our framework and explain how we aim to apply it for anticipating dangerous situations caused by crowds and warning people.

As software becomes more integral to daily life and business operations, its sustainability impact is increasing, and increasingly recognized. This study investigates the key challenges hindering stakeholders from adopting and implementing sustainability practices within organizations. To this aim, we interview 15 practitioners in two organizations to identify the challenges in sustainability adoption and implementation of sustainability practices in the daily workflow of software professionals. Our results highlight the practical challenges, recommendations, and benefits of implementing sustainability practices in real-world organizational settings. Lack of sustainability prioritization, knowledge awareness, measurement tools, scarce resources, and organizational culture are the key challenge areas. By balancing priorities, the investment in sustainability education and tool support coupled with cultural change and resource-rich incentivization programs can motivate practitioners to use sustainability practices. If so, organizations could save money and energy, improve overall productivity, and foster personal satisfaction.

Many software businesses face increasing regulatory pressure and requirements changes that target more sustainable software systems. Therefore, integrating sustainability into software architecture is crucial for the long-term viability of organizations. In this study, we explore how new sustainability concerns can be effectively tackled within software architecture, especially when established architecture standards are followed. We present two main contributions derived from an industrial case study. First, we present the extension of existing architecture views, called decision maps, to trace the involvement of architecture standards. Such extension supports architects through informed decision making by integrating sustainability aspects while adhering to architecture standards. Second, we propose a set of key performance indicators to monitor the ongoing application of these standards and assess their impact on the software architecture and its sustainability over time. Our findings provide valuable insights and instruments for experts to first assess sustainability within the constraints of architecture standards, and then monitor their sustainability impact. This will help to meet regulatory requirements and align software design with strategic sustainability goals. We provide tangible guiding steps to improve sustainability awareness and decision-making.

Diverging interests in the workplace may lead to undesirable employee behavior such as taking undue credit, underperforming, shirking responsibilities, and undermining colleagues. This kind of conduct, also referred to as weasel behavior, can have significant negative implications for both individuals and the organization as a whole. Therefore, its identification is of crucial importance. Recent work in process science has defined thirteen weasel behavior patterns and proposed the use of process mining related techniques to uncover them from the traces recorded by information systems. However, these definitions have not yet been tested on any event log. This paper aims at closing this gap by providing the design specifications and algorithms necessary to extract weasel behavior from event logs. We evaluate our implementation on the real-world logs provided by the IEEE Task Force on Process Mining and report the extent of weasel behavior present in each dataset. Our results have relevant implications on the application and development of resource-centered process analysis techniques and contribute to better understanding the information present in the widely-used BPI logs.

business processes require continuous changes or interventions to remain efficient and competitive over time. However, implementing these changes-such as reordering or adding new tasks- can negatively affect the overall process performance. A longstanding problem in business Process Management is that of forecasting ex-ante the values that process performance measures will assume after implementing changes. To achieve this, the concept of Digital Process Twins, which extends the well-established Digital Twin paradigm, paves the way for new interesting opportunities. Digital Process Twins enable enhanced what-if analysis by virtually predicting process performance under various changes, thus allowing for informed decision-making before actuating process changes in the real world. However, despite recognition as one of the new key enablers of modern process re-engineerization, a comprehensive approach to implementing Digital Process Twins is still lacking. This paper proposes a novel conceptual architecture for deploying Digital Process Twins to address this gap. Additionally, we introduce Dolly, a framework that implements such conceptual architecture using a multi-modeling approach combining domain data and process modeling along with a data-driven process simulation technique.

Issues of equality and fair treatment in the workforce have held a position in professional discourse across fields for decades. Gender equality is particularly relevant in fields such as information technology (IT), where developed products and systems affect all segments of society. The current paper presents a study that probed professional experiences in the field of IT, in Finland, from the perspective of gender. The study was implemented as a questionnaire where N = 93 individuals participated. Our results show that women paid close attention to how their gender influenced multiple aspects of their professional lives, reporting both negative and positive impacts on several categories. Men generally perceived their gender as irrelevant in most of the categories except salary. Women also highlighted experiences of sexual harassment and biased behavior. These statistically significant results contribute to advancing knowledge on gendered conditions of professionals and how they influence the IT industry.

Log management and application health monitoring practices are cumbersome and often still require significant human intervention to prevent inaccurate data and information. Existing technologies like Elasticsearch and Grafana offer opportunities to automate and improve these practices. This paper reports on a design solution aimed at enhancing log categorization, anomaly detection, and real-time application health reporting for CAPE Groep's service application. The proposed solution leverages Elasticsearch's Machine Learning capabilities and Grafana's dynamic visualization tools, alongside a newly developed dashboard named Horus, to centralize log data and automate monitoring processes. Preliminary results indicate that the proposed solution significantly improves the accuracy and timeliness of health reports, reduces manual intervention, and provides comprehensive real-time insights into application performance. This paper outlines the requirements, architectural design, and phased implementation plan, demonstrating the potential to streamline operations, enhance service delivery, and support future more stringent scalability requirements.

business processes have the potential to enhance efficiency, flexibility, productivity and revenue by, for example, automating. They can automate routine procedures thereby reducing costs of a process. In recent years, a plethora of frameworks have been developed that facilitate the modelling of activity-centric business processes. Nevertheless, there is a paucity of frameworks that concentrate on object-centric or data-driven business processes. Furthermore, the majority of commercially available business process tools provide local applications and only a limited number leveraging the benefits of a web-based environment. This demonstration paper presents the implementation of a web-based modelling environment that implements the object-centric business process management approach: PHILharmonicFlows. The implementation is a redesigned and enhanced web-based edition of the original, locally developed prototype. Moreover, the web-based framework incorporates additional features, including sophisticated verification algorithms, measurement metrics for the monitoring component, a more user-friendly graphical user interface (GUI), and functions that enable the modelling of a business process in greater detail than the original prototype, by setting constraints.

The increasing complexity and volume of organizational data have led to the emergence of the Data Mesh paradigm, a data architecture with a federated governance aimed at addressing the limitations of traditional monolithic data systems that has overlapping principles with the microservices architectural style. Although related work exists, the majority of architectural approaches regarding Data Mesh are conceptual, technology-centric or vendor specific. This paper introduces a Data Mesh Reference Architecture (RA) using the ArchiMate enterprise architecture modeling language, designed to assist organizations in implementing (or migrating towards) data mesh solutions. The RA comprises three main components: domain architecture, self-serve data platform architecture, and federated governance, which reflect the main Data Mesh principles. Through a systematic literature review, four data mesh archetypes (Pure, Semi-Pure, Hybrid, and Distributed) were identified, along with challenges, limitations, and motivational factors for adoption. A questionnaire-based validation among experts confirmed the RA's utility, quality, and variability. However, practical validation was not conducted within this study. The study contributes to both literature and practice by offering a structured approach and a set of reference models for designing data mesh architectures. Future research can contribute to practical validation, assessment of RA-driven design efficiency, and extending the RA with domain-driven solution architectures.
