Forward-looking companies like Google and Baidu have started to complement their efficiency targets with effectiveness goals such as new or better insights. Based on findings from two reference companies, this article ranks a list of initial analytical business services that combine data across different shared service-center domains. Clustered by the beneficiary functions, that are Human Resources, Supply Chain Management, and Sales, we detail three out of twenty-two initially developed analytical business services and highlight how shared service centers can add value through these activities. Based on discussions with functional experts and practitioners about this finding, we conclude that analytical business services should be an essential lever towards new business models for shared service centers.

IoT devices supporting business processes (BPs) in sectors like manufacturing, logistics or healthcare collect data on the execution of the processes. In the last years, there has been a growing awareness of the opportunity to use the data these devices generate for process mining (PM) by deriving an event log from a sensor log via event abstraction techniques. However, IoT data are often affected by data quality issues (e.g., noise, outliers) which, if not addressed at the preprocessing stage, will be amplified by event abstraction and result in quality issues in the event log (e.g., incorrect events), greatly hampering PM results. In this paper, we review the literature on PM with IoT data to find the most frequent data quality issues mentioned in the literature. Based on this, we then derive six patterns of poor sensor data quality that cause event log quality issues and propose solutions to avoid or solve them.

During the last years, a number of studies have experimented with applying process mining (PM) techniques to smart spaces data. The general goal has been to automatically model human routines as if they were business processes. However, applying process-oriented techniques to smart spaces data comes with its own set of challenges. This paper surveys existing approaches that apply PM to smart spaces and analyses how they deal with the following challenges identified in the literature: choosing a modelling formalism for human behaviour;bridging the abstraction gap between sensor and event logs;and segmenting logs in traces. The added value of this article lies in providing the research community with a common ground for some important challenges that exist in this field and their respective solutions, and to assist further research efforts by outlining opportunities for future work.

Requirements are key artefacts to describe the intended purpose of a software system. The quality of requirements is crucial for deciding what to do next, impacting the development process' effectiveness and efficiency. However, we know very little about the connection between practitioners' perceptions regarding requirements quality and its impact on the process or the feelings of the professionals involved in the development process. Objectives: This study investigates: i) How software development practitioners define requirements quality, ii) how the perceived quality of requirements impact process and stakeholders' well-being, and iii) what are the causes and potential solutions for poor-quality requirements. Method: This study was performed as a descriptive interview study at a sub-organization of a Nordic bank that develops its own web and mobile apps. The data collection comprises interviews with 20 practitioners, including requirements engineers, developers, testers, and newly employed developers, with five interviewees from each group. Results: The results show that different roles have different views on what makes a requirement good quality. Participants highlighted that, in general, they experience negative emotions, more work, and overhead communication when they work with requirements they perceive to be of poor quality. The practitioners also describe positive effects on their performance and positive feelings when they work with requirements that they perceive to be good.

Given the rapid growth of distributed energy generation and the anticipated rise in demand-response, one of the most important issues is how to integrate the energy resources into the existing market. The energy sector has undergone a considerable transformation during the past years due to changing legislation, technologies and consumer behavior. Therefore, this work explores the patterns that form the energy market transformation, measures awareness regarding energy market and gain insights on energy market tools and services, through a survey implemented within the innovative project PARITY. Moreover, the knowledge gained from the participants is used to identify segments of interest. The main findings from the market transformation survey include among other topics, that the energy market is envisioned to be entirely based in DERs by the end of 2035, while the primary barrier for the latter are the lack of EU and national regulations, as well as the inadequate technological design, lack of standardization, and interoperability. The survey also revealed that smart energy contracts, load forecasting mechanisms, personalized profile models and dynamic pricing schemes are some of the services that can increase the productivity and profitability within local energy markets. Finally, this report is based on research carried out in early 2022, drawing from professionals within the H2020 project PARITY and were from a variety of industries with an emphasis on energy production, analysis, and consulting.

yIn the area of industrial process mining, privacy-preserving event data publication is becoming increasingly relevant. Consequently, the trade-off between high data utility and quantifiable privacy poses new challenges. State-of-the-art research mainly focuses on differentially private trace variant construction based on prefix expansion methods. However, these algorithms face several practical limitations such as high computational complexity, introducing fake variants, removing frequent variants, and a bounded variant length. In this paper, we introduce a new approach for direct differentially private trace variant release which uses anonymized partition selection strategies to overcome the aforementioned restraints. Experimental results on real-life event data show that our algorithm outperforms state-of-the-art methods in terms of both plain data utility and result utility preservation.

Different techniques are used by companies to enhance their processes. Process mining (PM) is one of these techniques that relies on the user activity logs recorded by information systems to discover the process model, to check conformance with the prescribed process, to enhance the process, and to recommend or guess the next user activity. From another hand, many contextual factors such as time, location, weather, and user's profile influence the user activities. However, PM techniques are mainly activity-oriented and do not take into consideration the contextual environment. Our main goal is to enrich process models obtained using process mining technics with contextual information issued from sensors data and to construct contextual process models for a better process discovery, conformance checking, and recommendations. In this paper, we test the feasibility to integrate events logs with sensor logs to provide meaningful results. We use existing datasets with events and sensors logs about daily activities in Smart Home to construct a process model enriched by contextual information.

Constraint monitoring aims to monitor the violation of constraints in business processes, e.g., an invoice should be cleared within 48 h after the corresponding goods receipt, by analyzing event data. Existing techniques for constraint monitoring assume that a single case notion exists in a business process, e.g., a patient in a healthcare process, and each event is associated with the case notion. However, in reality, business processes are object-centric, i.e., multiple case notions (objects) exist, and an event may be associated with multiple objects. For instance, an Order-To-Cash (O2C) process involves order, item, delivery, etc., and they interact when executing an event, e.g., packing multiple items together for a delivery. The existing techniques produce misleading insights when applied to such object-centric business processes. In this work, we propose an approach to monitoring constraints in object-centric business processes. To this end, we introduce Object-Centric Constraint Graphs (OCCGs) to represent constraints that consider the interaction of objects. Next, we evaluate the constraints represented by OCCGs by analyzing Object-Centric Event Logs (OCELs) that store the interaction of different objects in events. We have implemented a web application to support the proposed approach and conducted two case studies using a real-life SAP ERP system.

Design thinking is a creative process that requires brainstorming techniques that take place in a physical environment. However, such physical interactions are not possible in remote environments. In this paper, we propose a software tool for design thinking that bridges the gap between physical, digital, and virtual modeling environments. We describe and evaluate a virtual storyboarding application that enables remote collaborative design thinking in 3D and the conversion of these 3D models into 2D digital models. To evaluate the approach, we conducted an experiment with students and were able to derive directions for further research in this area.

Extending business Process Management (BPM) with Internet of Things (IoT) enhances process automation, improves process monitoring, and enables decision making based on data from the physical world. In this context, the transformation of low-level IoT data to process-level IoT-driven events constitutes an important step. However, the modeling of these transformations is challenging due to the complexity of IoT environments. Contemporary approaches do not provide sufficient support to model these transformations. Process models either become too complex with increasing numbers of devices and transformations, or this logic is externalized and viewed as a black box. This paper presents an integrated approach to model IoT-driven events in processes based on a BPMN 2.0 extension and a tool that adopts concepts from DMN. A scenario from smart production is used to demonstrate the application and improved integration of IoT-driven events in processes.
