Predictive process monitoring techniques leverage machine learning (ML) to predict future characteristics of a case, such as the process outcome or the remaining run time. Available techniques employ various models and different types of input data to produce accurate predictions. However, from a practical perspective, explainability is another important requirement besides accuracy since predictive process monitoring techniques frequently support decision-making in critical domains. Techniques from the area of explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) aim to provide this capability and create transparency and interpretability for black-box ML models. While several explainable predictive process monitoring techniques exist, none of them leverages textual data. This is surprising since textual data can provide a rich context to a process that numerical features cannot capture. Recognizing this, we use this paper to investigate how the combination of textual and non-textual data can be used for explainable predictive process monitoring and analyze how the incorporation of textual data affects both the predictions and the explainability. Our experiments show that using textual data requires more computation time but can lead to a notable improvement in prediction quality with comparable results for explainability.

Recently, the consideration of data aspects has seen a surge in interest both from the perspective of designing processes as from a model discovery perspective. However, it seems that both research domains (models for design and model discovery) use different conceptualisations of data/object-aware systems. In an ideal situation, when (designed) models are implemented, the resulting information systems are equipped with logging functionalities that allow the rediscovery of the models based on which the information systems were implemented. However, there is a lack of guidelines on how to set up logging. From a logging perspective, logging formats are unclear about the granularity of events: the logging may be done at the level of entire tasks or at the level of the operations on individual objects, or a single log may even contain a mix of events at different granularity levels. The lack of clarity in this matter complicates the correct interpretation of log information. The goal of this paper is therefore to investigate how the concepts of object-centric logging and those for data-aware process modelling may be better aligned. This will facilitate setting up proper logging at system implementation time, and facilitate the connection of discovered models to models-for-design. The investigation resulted in iDOCEM, a metamodel that aligns the DOCEL and the Merode meta-model. Comparing iDOCEM to different other logging meta-models demonstrates that the proposed meta-model is complete enough to capture (more than) existing logging formats.

The combination of machine learning techniques with process analytics like process mining might significantly elevate novel insights into time-series data collections that are predominantly used in disciplines like life and natural science. To efficiently analyse time-series data by process mining requires bridging several challenges. For instance, time-series data need to be processed and represented in a useable form to turn into information. This paper provides: (1) A structured approach to map time-series data on control-flow patterns that we annotated for our purpose. (2) Based on the simulation of the patterns it is possible to generate synthetic data in varying quality, which is again a crucial step for accurate results from machine learning techniques. In this way, our approach contributes understanding novel insights in terms of causaleffects in time-series data, which could not be answered by traditional approaches used in the disciplines.

This paper positions the work of the EU DigiChecks project, presenting its approach and preliminary findings for standardizing and automating the Verification & Validation (V&V) process of permit requirements in construction projects. For the context of Permit Requirements Management (PRM), we formulate and explore four levels of explicitness for modelling requirements, ranging from document-based to model-based, and discuss how higher levels increase automation capabilities. Our early findings indicate that while model-based requirements offer the highest potential for automation, their explicitness is incompatible with current PRM processes and poses challenges for human understanding. By adopting the intermediate level of enriched text as level of explicitness for PRM instead, enabled by knowledge-graph technology, benefits of existing document-based processes are maintained. This level also offers an increased level of machine-interpretability compared to document-based permits and traceable proof of permit compliance across contexts. First explorations of these two levels suggest that enriched text is more feasible for use by non-technical users, also in terms of software solutions already available, than alternative, model-based solutions.

Modelling processes with declarative process models, i.e. sets of constraints, allows for a great degree of flexibility in process execution. However, having behavior specified by means of symbolic (textual) constraints comes along with the problem that it is often hard for humans to understand which exact behavior is allowed, and which is not (think for example of checking relationships between constraints). This becomes especially problematic when modellers need to carry out changes to a model. For example, a modeller must make sure that any alteration to a model does not introduce any unwanted or non-compliant behavior. As this is often difficult for humans, editing declarative process models currently bears the risk of (accidentally) inducing unforeseen compliance breaches due to some overlooked changes in behavior. In this work, we therefore present an approach to efficiently compute the behavioral changes between a declarative process model M and a corresponding (edited) model M'. This supports modellers in understanding the behavioral changes induced by an alteration to the constraints. We implement our approach and show that behavioral changes can be computed within milliseconds even for real-life data-sets.

Constraint monitoring aims to monitor the violation of constraints in business processes, e.g., an invoice should be cleared within 48 h after the corresponding goods receipt, by analyzing event data. Existing techniques for constraint monitoring assume that a single case notion exists in a business process, e.g., a patient in a healthcare process, and each event is associated with the case notion. However, in reality, business processes are object-centric, i.e., multiple case notions (objects) exist, and an event may be associated with multiple objects. For instance, an Order-To-Cash (O2C) process involves order, item, delivery, etc., and they interact when executing an event, e.g., packing multiple items together for a delivery. The existing techniques produce misleading insights when applied to such object-centric business processes. In this work, we propose an approach to monitoring constraints in object-centric business processes. To this end, we introduce Object-Centric Constraint Graphs (OCCGs) to represent constraints that consider the interaction of objects. Next, we evaluate the constraints represented by OCCGs by analyzing Object-Centric Event Logs (OCELs) that store the interaction of different objects in events. We have implemented a web application to support the proposed approach and conducted two case studies using a real-life SAP ERP system.

Technology acceptance of social media and instant messaging applications is an important area of research. However, a common framework consistent with fixed-effects technology acceptance models is lacking. Researchers disagree on which variables are most useful in which circumstances, and consequently there is no unified item pool. Researchers are forced to use different variables and design technology acceptance questionnaires from scratch, resulting in unacceptable variability and lack of generalizability across studies. Our paper aims to address this problem by reviewing the literature, selecting the best variables and items, and creating a state-of-the-art questionnaire that can be used by authors and future researchers in the field of social media technology acceptance studies.

Software is a critical component of nearly every product or service. Improvements in software can lead to substantial competitive advantages. At the same time, software and surrounding engineering teams have become increasingly complex. The adoption of continuous integration and delivery is a recent trend to radically improve software release speed. However, its adoption is far from straightforward. Specifically, rethinking processes, organizational culture, ways of working, and business models require buy-in from diverse stakeholders that may have conflicting objectives. Such situations are explored by organizational conflict research. This paper reports on early lessons from an ongoing research project in continuous software engineering, specifically investigating adoption challenges from an organizational conflict perspective. We identify catalysts, symptoms, and outcomes of organizational conflicts hindering the adoption process. We conclude that predictable conflicts emerge when adopting continuous engineering. Engineers, managers, and other teams can proactively prepare for and allocate resources to resolve them. Proper analysis and management can help avoid wasted time, impeding processes, and frustration.

Centralised warehouses are a widespread practice in the healthcare supply chain, as they allow for the storage of large quantities of products a short distance from hospitals and pharmacies, allowing both a reduction in warehouse costs and prompt replenishment in case of shortages. However, for this practice to lead to effective optimization, warehouses need to be equipped with efficient order fulfillment and picking strategies, as well as a storage policy that takes into account the specific procedures of the various types of items, necessary to preserve their quality. In this framework, we present a storage location assignment problem with product-cell incompatibility and isolation constraints, modeling goals and restrictions of a storage policy in a pharmaceutical warehouse. In this problem, the total distance that order pickers travel to retrieve all required items in a set of orders must be minimised. An Iterated Local Search algorithm is proposed to solve the problem, numerical experiments based on simulated data are presented, and a detailed procedure is provided on how to retrieve and structure the warehouse layout input data. The results show a dramatic improvement over a greedy full turnover procedure commonly adopted in real-life operations.

The study explored the opportunities, barriers and enablers for Artificial intelligence for IToperations (AIOps) in the higher education sector. It adopted the case study strategy supported by an interpretive and qualitative approach. Primary data was collected through semi-structured interviews with IT management and staff at two institutions of higher learning. The Technology Organisation Environment (TOE) framework was the theoretical lens used to understand the perceptions of the respondents regarding the barriers and enablers towards implementing AIOps. The results highlighted various themes related to the implementation of AIOps including: IT infrastructure, skills challenges, executive support, budget constraints, IT strategy and governance.
