In order to better facilitate the need for continuous business process improvement, the application of DevOps principles has been proposed. In particular, the AB-BPM methodology applies AB testing and reinforcement learning to increase the speed and quality of improvement efforts. In this paper, we provide an industry perspective on this approach, assessing requirements, risks, opportunities, and more aspects of the AB-BPM methodology and supporting tools. Our qualitative analysis combines grounded theory with a Delphi study, including semi-structured interviews and multiple follow-up surveys with a panel of ten business process management experts. The main findings indicate a need for human control during reinforcement learning-driven experiments, the importance of aligning the methodology culturally and organizationally with the respective setting, and the necessity of an integrated process execution platform.

Nowadays, information technology (IT) is a strategic asset for organizations. As a result, the IT costs are rising and there is a need for transparency about their root causes. Cost drivers as an instrument in IT cost management enable a better transparency and understanding of costs. However, there is a lack of IT cost driver research with a focus on the strategic position of IT within organizations. The goal of this paper is to develop a comprehensive overview of strategic drivers of IT costs. The Delphi study leads to the identification and validation of 17 strategic drivers. Hence, this paper builds a base for cost driver analysis and contributes to a better understanding of the causes of costs. It facilitates future research regarding cost behavior and the business value of IT. Additionally, practitioners gain awareness of levers to influence IT costs and consequences of managerial decisions on their IT spend.

The paper proposes a new frontier for conceptual modeling - universal conceptual modeling (UCM) - defined as conceptual modeling that is general-purpose and accessible to anyone. For the purposes of the discussion, we envision a non-existent, hypothetical universal conceptual modeling language, which we call Datish (as in English or Spanish for data). We focus on the need for a universal conceptual data model to explain the expected benefits of UCM. Datish can facilitate the design of many different applications, including relational databases, NoSQL databases, data lakes, and artificial intelligence systems, and enable use by a broad range of users. To pave the way for rigorous development of such a language, we provide a theoretical basis for Datish in the form of a set of universal conceptual modeling principles: flexibility, accessibility, ubiquity, minimalism, primitivism, and modularity. We apply these principles to illustrate their usefulness and to identify future research opportunities.

Process discovery is a family of techniques that helps to comprehend processes from their data footprints. Yet, as processes change over time so should their corresponding models, and failure to do so will lead to models that underor over-approximate behaviour. We present a discovery algorithm that extracts declarative processes as Dynamic Condition Response (DCR) graphs from event streams. Streams are monitored to generate temporal representations of the process, later processed to create declarative models. We validated the technique by identifying drifts in a publicly available dataset of event streams. The metrics extend the Jaccard similarity measure to account for process change in a declarative setting. The technique and the data used for testing are available online.

Background. A combination of traditional and agile methodologies into so-called "hybrid approaches" are today's reality. The intention is to attempt maximization of benefits from both approaches. Water-Scrum-Fall is a methodology for hybrid approaches. However, there are no specific guidelines described for Water-Scrum-Fall. Aim. Explore and describe the reality of Water-Scrum-Fall in selected large companies in the Czech market. Method. Exploratory multiple-case study - four companies, eight participants. Semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis. Results. Insights into real-life Water-Scrum-Fall including involved roles, associated events, and typically created artifacts. Conclusion. In examined companies, modified agile methodologies are used as part of Water-Scrum-Fall, while their benefits are not fully unlocked due to poor implementations. However, project success rate is high. Hybrid approaches still require rigorous analysis before the development is started, which strongly limits the agility in the following development phase. Customer involvement or feedback loop is omitted in the development process. We accompany poor implementations with the unpreparedness of companies to fully adopt Agile, and missing senior roles, like scrum masters, to educate teams and organizations in proper agile practices.

Recently, the consideration of data aspects has seen a surge in interest both from the perspective of designing processes as from a model discovery perspective. However, it seems that both research domains (models for design and model discovery) use different conceptualisations of data/object-aware systems. In an ideal situation, when (designed) models are implemented, the resulting information systems are equipped with logging functionalities that allow the rediscovery of the models based on which the information systems were implemented. However, there is a lack of guidelines on how to set up logging. From a logging perspective, logging formats are unclear about the granularity of events: the logging may be done at the level of entire tasks or at the level of the operations on individual objects, or a single log may even contain a mix of events at different granularity levels. The lack of clarity in this matter complicates the correct interpretation of log information. The goal of this paper is therefore to investigate how the concepts of object-centric logging and those for data-aware process modelling may be better aligned. This will facilitate setting up proper logging at system implementation time, and facilitate the connection of discovered models to models-for-design. The investigation resulted in iDOCEM, a metamodel that aligns the DOCEL and the Merode meta-model. Comparing iDOCEM to different other logging meta-models demonstrates that the proposed meta-model is complete enough to capture (more than) existing logging formats.

Process mining is a set of techniques that are used by organizations to understand and improve their operational processes. The first essential step in designing any process reengineering procedure is to find process improvement opportunities. In existing work, it is usually assumed that the set of problematic process instances in which an undesirable outcome occurs is known prior or is easily detectable. So the process enhancement procedure involves finding the root causes and the treatments for the problem in those process instances. For example, the set of problematic instances is considered as those with outlier values or with values smaller/bigger than a given threshold in one of the process features. However, on various occasions, using this approach, many process enhancement opportunities, not captured by these problematic process instances, are missed. To overcome this issue, we formulate finding the process enhancement areas as a context-sensitive anomaly/outlier detection problem. We define a process enhancement area as a set of situations (process instances or prefixes of process instances) where the process performance is surprising. We aim to characterize those situations where process performance is significantly different from what was expected considering its performance in similar situations. To evaluate the validity and relevance of the proposed approach, we have implemented and evaluated it on a real-life event log.

business Process Management (BPM) is a widely applied discipline in many organizations. Creating and maintaining business process models is a task that still requires much human work and is costly and cumbersome. The reuse of business process models is a solution to minimize human effort and increase quality. For reuse, appropriate process models must be discovered in a repository. Enrichment of the models with semantic annotations from domain ontologies can leverage better results for of discovering reusable process models. Although using semantically annotated business process models for the case of reuse has been mentioned and proposed in the literature, the exact requirements and implementation have yet to be analyzed in detail. This paper closes this research gap with an artifact in the form of a methodology to discover business process models. This includes a list of relevant criteria, a base ontology, possible automated annotation techniques, and a query form.

This paper contributes to ongoing research by providing a selection of design elements to enrich the learning experience for adult learners and to actively involve them in their learning process. To supplement the courses, a web-based interactive mixed-media approach was selected, providing access to the learning content anywhere and anytime. Within this paper we extend previous research and report on experiences with several self-paced e-learning courses on business information systems at a German University. The self-paced e-learning environments presented here were developed in a repetitive scheme, following the same pattern. Astencilwas developed for this pattern to facilitate the design of further e-learning environments. To evaluate the acceptance of the concept within the target group of adult learners, qualitative and quantitative evaluations were conducted in real-life situations. This evaluation confirmed a positive impact on flow, interest, motivation, and perceived usefulness regarding the learning efficiency.

Assigning resources in business processes execution is a repetitive task that can be effectively automated. However, different automation methods may give varying results that may not be optimal. Proper resource allocation is crucial as it may lead to significant cost reductions or increased effectiveness that results in increased revenues. In this work, we first propose a novel representation that allows the modeling of a multi-process environment with different process-based rewards. These processes can share resources that differ in their eligibility. Then, we use double deep reinforcement learning to look for an optimal resource allocation policy. We compare those results with two popular strategies that are widely used in the industry. Learning optimal policy through reinforcement learning requires frequent interactions with the environment, so we also designed and developed a simulation engine that can mimic real-world processes. The results obtained are promising. Deep reinforcement learning based resource allocation achieved significantly better results compared to two commonly used techniques.
