Data Lakes have been widely used to handle massive amounts of data arriving at high velocity and variety. However, if proper data management concerns are not addressed, this massive data storage can easily turn Data Lakes into Data Swamps. Furthermore, data must be associated with the data artefacts created to extract value from it, such as pipelines used to collect, treat, or process data and analytical artefacts such as analytical dashboards and machine learning models. This paper proposes a more comprehensive view of a Data Lake, in which all of these resources can be stored and managed. To that end, the conceptual meta-model incorporates a data catalog, data at various stages of maturity, pipelines, dashboards, and machine learning models. The proposed meta-model was instantiated in the *** (Advanced Decision Making in Productive Systems through Intelligent Networks) project, showing how vast amounts of data and their related artefacts can be managed to support decision-making processes with data analytics.

This paper positions the work of the EU DigiChecks project, presenting its approach and preliminary findings for standardizing and automating the Verification & Validation (V&V) process of permit requirements in construction projects. For the context of Permit Requirements Management (PRM), we formulate and explore four levels of explicitness for modelling requirements, ranging from document-based to model-based, and discuss how higher levels increase automation capabilities. Our early findings indicate that while model-based requirements offer the highest potential for automation, their explicitness is incompatible with current PRM processes and poses challenges for human understanding. By adopting the intermediate level of enriched text as level of explicitness for PRM instead, enabled by knowledge-graph technology, benefits of existing document-based processes are maintained. This level also offers an increased level of machine-interpretability compared to document-based permits and traceable proof of permit compliance across contexts. First explorations of these two levels suggest that enriched text is more feasible for use by non-technical users, also in terms of software solutions already available, than alternative, model-based solutions.

To solve the problem of relatively low efficiency in most of nowadays solar panels, this paper proposes a new solution by diagnosing and optimizing solar panel installations. Dr. Solar, a sensor-based device, acquires information on solar radiation, geographical position, inclination, roll, panel temperature, and ambient temperature and humidity. The sensor-based device is mounted to the solar panel for a few days while collecting data. The cloud-based service gathers information from the inverter while the device is moved to other installations. Combined with the data of power generation from the inverter, a cloud service is offered for processing and analyzing the data to maximize power production by adjusting the panel installation. During several short-term experiments in different places, Dr. Solar provided reliable data for analysis on the cloud platform, and a web interface was developed to calculate power production. The solution has increased photovoltaic panels' efficiency by optimizing adjustments to the panel's physical position (tilt and angle). The paper describes the sensor-based device, the cloud service, and the algorithms used.

Since the 1970s, telecommuting has generated significant interest among scholars and practitioners alike. However, the topic of flexible working arrangements has never been more relevant than lately, in the face of COVID-19 pandemic. As digital technologies evolve different aspects of today's world, immersive workplaces enabled by technologies such as virtual reality (VR) become more appealing. Therefore, the main objective of this paper is to study the phenomenon of virtual immersive workspaces and the generated impact in the organizations. Conducting semi-structured expert interviews, this study provides insights to better understand the trends driving subsequent immersive technologies, fostering competitive advantages in the web3 era, but also relevant roadblocks organizations face in this context. Our results identify the key benefits, as well as the limitations pertaining to the implementation of VR in the workplace. Moreover, our findings address the importance of purposefully designing a toolset for telecommuters to inspire further debates on the future of work for academia and in practice.

Event logs are the main source for business process mining techniques. However, not all information systems produce a standard event log. Furthermore, logs may reflect only parts of the process which may span multiple systems. We suggest using network traffic data to fill these gaps. However, traffic data is interleaved and noisy, and there is a conceptual gap between this data and event logs at the business level. This paper proposes a method for producing event logs from network traffic data. The specific challenges addressed are (a) abstracting the low-level data to business-meaningful activities, (b) overcoming the interleaving of low-level events due to concurrency of activities and processes, and (c) associating the abstracted events to cases. The method uses two trained sequence models based on Conditional random fields (CRF), applied to data reflecting interleaved activities. We use simulated traffic data generated by a predefined business process. The data is annotated for sequence learning to produce models which are used for identifying concurrently performed activities and cases to produce an event log. The event log is conformed against the process models with high fitness and precision scores.

An important "building block" for an organization's digital maturity seems to be the implementation of platforms. In general, platforms as software or hardware infrastructures through which users and organizations can create applications, services, and communities, can trigger so-called network effects. These effects act as a catalyst for the organization's digitalmaturity, by positively impacting key factors such as IT infrastructure, collaboration or innovation within the firm. The importance of implementing platforms for organizations pursuing the goal of raising their digital maturity is thus widely accepted. However, there is a lack of knowledge concerning the type of platforms that is beneficial for an organization's desired digital transformation. Based on the qualitative content analysis of 24 Digitalmaturity models (DMMs) that are frameworks prescribing key elements and a model path for an organization's digital maturity, we establish a first comprehensive overview of ten different platform types relevant for digital maturity. The most prominent types are: IT-Infrastructure, collaboration, and value chain platforms. Using an established framework, we were able to classify the differing platform concepts into "platforms with selectively open interfaces" and "platforms with N-sided market infrastructures". Based on these insights, we derive a first working definition of the term platform in the context of digital maturity. We thus contribute to the advancement of both research fields and their overlap. Furthermore, we offer managers guidance in the interpretation and application of DMMs - in due consideration of different platform types.

Care pathways in hospitals around the world reported significant disruption during the recent COVID-19 pandemic but measuring the actual impact is more problematic. Process mining can be useful for hospital management to measure the conformance of real-life care to what might be considered normal operations. In this study, we aim to demonstrate that process mining can be used to investigate process changes associated with complex disruptive events. We studied perturbations to accident and emergency (A&E) and maternity pathways in a UK public hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic. Co-incidentally the hospital had implemented a Command Centre approach for patientflow management affording an opportunity to study both the planned improvement and the disruption due to the pandemic. Our study proposes and demonstrates a method for measuring and investigating the impact of such planned and unplanned disruptions affecting hospital care pathways. We found that during the pandemic, both A&E and maternity pathways had measurable reductions in the mean length of stay and a measurable drop in the percentage of pathways conforming to normative models. There were no distinctive patterns of monthly mean values of length of stay nor conformance throughout the phases of the installation of the hospital's new Command Centre approach. Due to a deficit in the available A&E data, the findings for A&E pathways could not be interpreted.

Human behavior could be represented in the form of a process. Existing process modeling notations, however, are not able to faithfully represent these very flexible and unstructured processes. Additional non-process aware perspectives should be considered in the representation. Control-flow and data dimensions should be combined to build a robust model which can be used for analysis purposes. The work in this paper proposes a new hybrid model in which these dimensions are combined. An enriched conformance checking approach is described, based on the alignment of imperative and declarative process models, which also supports data dimensions from a statistical viewpoint.

In conjunction with the rapid expansion of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), academic interest has grown in the analysis of MOOC student study sessions. Education researchers have increasingly regarded process mining as a promising tool with which to answer simple questions, including the order in which resources are completed. However, its application to more complex questions about learning dynamics remains a challenge. For example, do MOOC students genuinely study from a resource or merely skim content to understand what will come next? One common practice is to use the resources directly as activities, resulting in spaghetti process models that subsequently undergo filtering. However, this leads to over-simplified and difficult-to-interpret conclusions. Consequently, an event abstraction becomes necessary, whereby low-level events are combined with high-level activities. A wide range of event abstraction techniques has been presented in process mining literature, primarily in relation to data-driven bottom-up strategies, where patterns are discovered from the data and later mapped to education concepts. Accordingly, this paper proposes a domain-driven top-down framework that allows educators who are less familiar with data and process analytics to more easily search for a set of predefined high-level concepts from their own MOOC data. The framework outlined herein has been successfully tested in a Coursera MOOC, with the objective of understanding the in-session behavioral dynamics of learners who successfully complete their respective courses.

Due the societal change of experiencing remote working, caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, many corporations are facing the need for an extensive new remote work policy. Thus, corporations and management need to position themselves towards new ways of working and therefore towards the new standard of remote working in order to develop their long-term remote work policy. For this purpose, this study identifies criteria and consequences, as well as advantages and challenges which need to be considered during the policy-making procedure to incorporate a remote working environment. By conducting eleven semi-structured interviews with managers following a maximum variation sampling approach, valuable insights are gained, which deepen the understanding for a management's perspective. Regardless of the industry, this study most notably identifies that managers benefit from similar advantages and are confronted by identical challenges trying to establish remote working policies. Illustrating the different policies and investigating remote working in respect to today's highly relevant impact on the employer's attractiveness, present the key contribution to existing literature. This research provides extensive considerations and recommendations for the management how to deal with remote working.
