Decision mining enables the discovery of decision rules from event logs or streams, and constitutes an important part of in-depth analysis and optimisation of business processes. So far, decision mining has been merely applied in an ex-post way resulting in a snapshot of decision rules for the given chunk of log data. Online decision mining, by contrast, enables continuous monitoring of decision rule evolution and decision drift. Hence this paper presents an end-to-end approach for discovery as well as monitoring of decision points and the corresponding decision rules during runtime, bridging the gap between online control flow discovery and decision mining. The approach is evaluated for feasibility and applicability on four synthetic and one real-life data set.

One clear legacy from the COVID-19 pandemic is the widespread adoption of remote work and flexible work arrangements, especially in tech companies. However, the practicability of remote working has raised a significant debate. The preferences for remote work vary greatly even among the employees of the same company. Individual wishes for remote vs office work can be often found anywhere on the spectrum from fully remote work to fully onsite with the hybrid working options of a varying degree in the middle. The most obvious common denominator in this situation is full flexibility, i.e., letting people decide when they want to work where. However, such one-fits-all strategy does not really fit anybody. Instead, it gives rise to several inherent conflicts of interest. In this position paper, we summarize opinions and experiences about remote work in five fictional personas as collective images based on extensive research: quantitative data, research interviews, and informal discussions with both employees and managers in tech companies, including Spotify, Ericsson, Telenor, Tieto, SONY, and many others. We conclude that increased flexibility at work leads to the conflict of individual interests of increased personal flexibility, team interest of efficient teamwork and corporate interests of preserving efficiency, company culture, and retaining the talents.

Research and development (R&D) are the main factors for inserting new technologies and knowledge in the industry, starting from research developments established through collaborations between industry and academia (IAC) within software development organizations. These collaborative practices between these environments enhance the exchange of knowledge and experiences, favoring both communities involved. One of the main processes applied within software development is agile methodologies that present low effort and reduced failure rates in software development. The purpose of this article is to present an exploratory and empirical study of IAC practices in the context of Agile Software Development (ASD), exploring and characterizing solutions and practices, the challenges encountered in the application of IAC, and collaboration. A Systematic Literature Review (SLR) and a Snowballing were conducted in five databases, evaluating/analyzing 8460 articles following the defined criteria. As a result, ten categories of challenges and fourteen categories of good practices for application in collaborative projects were described, in addition to describing seven collaboration models.

In Model-Driven Engineering (MDE), source code can be automatically generated from models such as a class diagram and statecharts. However, even under the assumption that a model is correctly translated into executable code, there is no guarantee that the models correctly capture the user requirements. The validity of a model can be asserted by means of model execution or testing the (prototype) application generated from the model. The completeness of such validation effort can be expressed in terms of model coverage of the executed scenarios. TesCaV is a Model-Based Testing (MBT) tool that provides users feedback by visualizing which test cases have been performed and which ones not yet. This allows TesCaV to be used in an educational setting as its feedback about the manual test cases can be alleviated to let students understand how to adequately test a software system. However, it remains unclear what the best way is to provide this feedback in terms of providing the user maximal information with minimal cognitive load. This research evaluates several proposed visualizations created according to information visualization principles, and makes a ranking based on a questionnaire distributed to 45 participants.

In process mining settings, events are often recorded on a low level and cannot be used for meaningful analysis directly. Moreover, the resulting variability in the recorded event sequences leads to complex process models that provide limited insights. To overcome these issues, event abstraction techniques pre-process the event sequences by grouping the recorded low-level events into higher-level activities. However, existing abstraction techniques require elaborate input about high-level activities upfront to achieve acceptable abstraction results. This input is often not available or needs to be constructed, which requires considerable manual effort and domain knowledge. We overcome this by proposing an approach that suggests groups of low-level events for event abstraction. It does not require the user to provide elaborate input upfront, but still allows them to inspect and select groups of events that are related based on their common multi-perspective contexts. To achieve this, our approach learns representations of events that capture their context and automatically identifies and suggests interesting groups of related events. The user can inspect group descriptions and select meaningful groups to abstract the low-level event log.

Little research has been done on enabling software development teams to self-report waste to assist in productivity improvement. This study created a waste categorization and survey for teams to identify and quantify wasteful activities. Developers from a Swiss company used the survey for three weeks. Participants found the survey helpful for identifying waste but there was little evidence that self-reported waste correlated with improved performance.

GPT-3 and several other language models (LMs) can effectively address various natural language processing (NLP) tasks, including machine translation and text summarization. Recently, they have also been successfully employed in the business process management (BPM) domain, e.g., for predictive process monitoring and process extraction from text. This, however, typically requires fine-tuning the employed LM, which, among others, necessitates large amounts of suitable training data. A possible solution to this problem is the use of prompt engineering, which leverages pre-trained LMs without fine-tuning them. Recognizing this, we argue that prompt engineering can help bring the capabilities of LMs to BPM research. We use this position paper to develop a research agenda for the use of prompt engineering for BPM research by identifying the associated potentials and challenges.

Technical Debt Management (TDM) includes activities such as identifying, measuring, and prioritizing technical debt. It is mainly performed to proactively mitigate the risk of losing the maintainability and evolvability of the software product which results in reducing the team velocity. Despite the importance of TDM, its adoption in software companies remain limited. Software companies are witnessing high market demand and competition that make delivering customer value outweighs the effort invested in TDM activities. Since the impacts of technical debt are uncertain and evident only in the long run, it is more difficult for companies with very limited resources to proactively spend their resources on TDM. In this paper, we propose a lean approach to facilitate the adoption of TDM in software companies with very limited resources. Based on this approach, TDM is driven by project management metrics, such as team or sprint velocity, and velocity variance. We conducted an initial evaluation of the concept of this approach through a short survey of 43 software project/product managers. Most of the survey respondents have a positive impression about our approach, which will encourage us to proceed further using more robust empirical evaluation.

Extending business Process Management (BPM) with Internet of Things (IoT) enhances process automation, improves process monitoring, and enables decision making based on data from the physical world. In this context, the transformation of low-level IoT data to process-level IoT-driven events constitutes an important step. However, the modeling of these transformations is challenging due to the complexity of IoT environments. Contemporary approaches do not provide sufficient support to model these transformations. Process models either become too complex with increasing numbers of devices and transformations, or this logic is externalized and viewed as a black box. This paper presents an integrated approach to model IoT-driven events in processes based on a BPMN 2.0 extension and a tool that adopts concepts from DMN. A scenario from smart production is used to demonstrate the application and improved integration of IoT-driven events in processes.

Digital technologies enable new forms of value creation, value proposition, and value capturing for all kinds of organizations in all kinds of industries. Often, companies strive to digital transform and obtain consultancy services due to missing expert knowledge on how to approach the transformation. Interestingly, research shows that the consulting industry itself shows a high potential for a digital transformation, but platform-based consulting models and self-service consulting models are still underdeveloped. With this position paper, the authors propose an own approach on how to integrate human expert knowledge and machine learning in a novel hybrid artificial intelligence and platform-based consulting model, which not only offers the potential to transform the consultancy industry but also supports organizations in their transformation efforts. The authors take the area of digital leadership consulting to illustrate this.
