Extending business Process Management (BPM) with Internet of Things (IoT) enhances process automation, improves process monitoring, and enables decision making based on data from the physical world. In this context, the transformation of low-level IoT data to process-level IoT-driven events constitutes an important step. However, the modeling of these transformations is challenging due to the complexity of IoT environments. Contemporary approaches do not provide sufficient support to model these transformations. Process models either become too complex with increasing numbers of devices and transformations, or this logic is externalized and viewed as a black box. This paper presents an integrated approach to model IoT-driven events in processes based on a BPMN 2.0 extension and a tool that adopts concepts from DMN. A scenario from smart production is used to demonstrate the application and improved integration of IoT-driven events in processes.

Robotic Process Automation (RPA) offers a non-intrusive approach to workflow automation by defining and operationalizing automation rules through the graphical user interfaces of engineering and business tools. Thanks to its rapid development lifecycle, RPA has become a core enabler in many of nowadays' digital transformation efforts. In this paper, we briefly review how some of the critical success factors of RPA endeavors can be supported by the mature techniques of model-driven software engineering (MDSE);and how RPA can be used to improve the usability of MDSE tools. By that, we intend to shed light on the mutual benefits of RPA and MDSE and encourage researchers and practitioners to explore the synergies of the two fields. To organize such prospective efforts, we define a reference framework for integrating RPA and MDSE, and provide pointers to state-of-the-art RPA frameworks.

Data Lakes have been widely used to handle massive amounts of data arriving at high velocity and variety. However, if proper data management concerns are not addressed, this massive data storage can easily turn Data Lakes into Data Swamps. Furthermore, data must be associated with the data artefacts created to extract value from it, such as pipelines used to collect, treat, or process data and analytical artefacts such as analytical dashboards and machine learning models. This paper proposes a more comprehensive view of a Data Lake, in which all of these resources can be stored and managed. To that end, the conceptual meta-model incorporates a data catalog, data at various stages of maturity, pipelines, dashboards, and machine learning models. The proposed meta-model was instantiated in the *** (Advanced Decision Making in Productive Systems through Intelligent Networks) project, showing how vast amounts of data and their related artefacts can be managed to support decision-making processes with data analytics.

An important practical capability of conformance checking is that organizations can use it to alleviate potential deviations from the intended process behavior. However, existing techniques only identify these deviations, but do not provide insights on potential explanations, which could help to improve the process. In this paper, we present attribute-based conformance diagnosis (ABCD), a novel approach for correlating process conformance with trace attributes. ABCD builds on existing conformance checking techniques and uses machine learning techniques to find trace attribute values that potentially impact the process conformance. It creates a regression tree to identify those attribute combinations that correlate with higher or lower trace fitness. We evaluate the explanatory power, computational efficiency, and generated insights of ABCD based on publicly available event logs. The evaluation shows that ABCD can find correlations of trace attribute combinations with higher or lower fitness in a sufficiently efficient way, although computation time increases for larger log sizes.

Patients, when in a hospital, will go through a personalized treatment scheduled for many different reasons and with various outcomes. Furthermore, some patients and/or treatments require aftercare. Identifying the need for aftercare is crucial for improving the process of the patient and hospital. A late identification results in a patient staying longer than needed, occupying a bed that otherwise could serve another patient. In this paper, we will investigate to what extent events from the first hours of stay can help in predicting the need for aftercare. For that, we explored a dataset from a Dutch hospital. We compared different methods, considering different prediction moments (depending of the amount of initial hours of stay), and we evaluate the gain in earlier predicting the need for aftercare.

The core idea behind combining knowledge graph-based AI and machine learning is to formalize explicit knowledge as a knowledge base, which does not need to be learned, and to consider it in machine learning. Interactive machine learning provides an alternative to explicit knowledge modeling to include feedback from human experts in order to adapt and improve learned models. For semantic process analysis, we have developed an explainable AI approach based on a specific knowledge graph that delivers interpretable results about weaknesses and improvement potentials in business processes. In the present paper we show how interactive machine learning can extend the knowledge graph with human implicit knowledge. The knowledge graph does not solely rely on the initially created knowledge elements and defined calculation formulas, but learns incrementally at the time of user feedback by making small adjustments in the graph.

In a large-scale agile environment, a Product Owner receives requests from many different directions. Freedom to influence the direction of the product and push ideas forward sometimes requires saying "no". This is a case study that has been made by interviewing several Product Owners or people working in a Product Owner type of role. The case company, which is a large financial organization, encourages Product Owners to take responsibility by valuing an entrepreneurial mindset. This research examines whether it is possible to exercise entrepreneurial freedom in the Product Owner's work, and how much freedom the Product Owner has in the direction of the product, i.e. whether they have the freedom to say "no". A total of 18 Product Owners, and those in similar roles, as well as managers from the case company, were interviewed. The findings show that the role of the Product Owner needs to be clarified in order to have more freedom to act. Prioritizing is difficult and saying "no" is more difficult than desired. Product Owners find the urge for an entrepreneurial attitude understandable, however, it does not seem to fit perfectly into the everyday work life of a Product Owner in a large-scale set-up. When the understanding of the role deepens, Product Owners could have greater freedom to make their products successful.

Understanding students' learning patterns is key for supporting their learning experience and improving course design. However, this is particularly challenging in courses with large cohorts, which might contain diverse students that exhibit a wide range of behaviours. In this study, we employed a previously developed method, which considers process flow, sequence, and frequency of learning actions, for detecting students' learning tactics and strategies. With the aim of demonstrating its applicability to a new learning context, we applied the method to a large-scale online visual programming course. Four low-level learning tactics were identified, ranging from project- and video-focused to explorative. Our results also indicate that some students employed all four tactics, some used course assessments to strategize about how to study, while others selected only two or three of all learning tactics. This research demonstrates the applicability and usefulness of process mining for discovering meaningful and distinguishable learning strategies in large courses with thousands of learners.

Agile systems, like the Kanban and Scrum frameworks, are built on assumptions of sustainability and stability, however, there is little empirical evidence on whether such systems are stable in practice or not. Therefore, in this study we aim to inspect the stability of Agile systems by leveraging the concept of stability described in Queueing Theory. We define a novel metric, the Stability Metric, as a way of assessing queueing systems, especially Agile systems. We inspect 926 Jira projects in 14 organizations with over 1.6 million product backlog items using this metric. The analysis showed that 72.89% of these Jira projects were not stable and stable systems, on average, had product backlog sizes 10 times shorter than unstable ones. These results suggest that while the goal of Agile is to create a sustainable, stable way of working, this is not guaranteed, and a better understanding of systems and queues may be required to help design, create, coach, and maintain optimal Agile systems.

Creating and maintaining high-quality ontologies is crucial as they encapsulate the logic for rule-based artificial intelligence. One way to objectively assess ontologies is ontology metrics, and the research community has already proposed measurement frameworks for assessing ontology quality. Arguably, the most holistic framework available is OQuaRE. Not only does it suggest metrics, but it also links these metrics to quality characteristics and interprets them using a school-like grading system. However, in an effort to implement the framework for the metric calculation software NEOntometrics, serious drawbacks came to light: (1) Important parts of the framework are only available at online resources (thus not part of the scientific record and without ensured permanent availability). (2) The proposing authors have been involved in all applications of the framework and corresponding research, an outside perspective is missing. (3) At times, the meaning of metrics changed throughout the papers without notice, leading to conflicting definitions. (4) A thorough evaluation of the quality grades is missing. This research aims to fill this gap: We first scrutinize the various metric proposals with their conflicting versions and resolve these conflicts. Afterward, we present OQuaRE to its full extent to create a permanent, lasting record. At last, we use a large body of evaluated ontologies to assess whether OQuaREs quality ratings sufficiently cover the ontology models used in the wild.
