This paper introduces a method for evaluating information security levels of organisations using a developed framework. The framework is based on Estonian information Security Standard categories which is compatible with ISO 27001 standard. The framework covers both technical and organisational aspects of information security. The results provide an overview of security to the organisation's management, compare different organisations across the region, and support strategic decision-making on a national level.

The question of how software development needs are channeled into different parts of a platform ecosystem has been addressed by separating owners and complementors and by separating the core and the periphery. This is not necessarily sufficient in business-to-business ecosystems due to their characteristics. Our grounded theory study observes a B2B platform that brings together multiple stakeholders and their software development. This paper describes the location aspect in decision making, what feature gets implemented in which part of the ecosystem and on what grounds. We refer to this decision of implementation location as feature demarcation. We describe the related structures and discuss why the location matters. Our work complements the existing research with an addition to the core-periphery view. In the process of situating a new feature we observe the architectural elements together instead of focusing on distinct entities.

For better or worse, information, communication, and technology (ICT) is taking over most part of our lives. During the past few years, organizations, industries, and educational and health institutions that could utilize the power of ICT and digitalization maintained high productivity, efficiency, economic and social resilience. Yet, at the same time, the trend towards digital transformation is contributing its fair share to increased energy consumption, e-waste, and carbon emissions. The challenge is how to ensure that organizations successfully embark on their digital strategy with sustainability at the center of the digital transformation. In this study, we aim to understand the motivations and needs of organizations towards adopting green ICT as a response to the sustainable development agenda. Through an exploratory and qualitative study, we surveyed ICT-related organizations to understand their motivations and challenges to adopting green ICT. Our findings show a lack of green ICT awareness and a vague corporate strategy for green ICT adoption. This study provides a foundation for practitioners and policymakers to develop strategies and support systems to enhance the organizational green ICT transformation agenda.

COVID-19 pandemic has taught us how to continue with the day-today activities interacting and working from remote locations. In this paper, we have highlighted the positive approach necessary to complete a project with success under this constraint by interacting regularly with the relevant stakeholders keeping focus on the final project deliverables. The salient points with supporting references are chalked out which might be helpful for others to follow if faced with stressful situations that COVID-19 pandemic taught us.

business Process Automation (BPA) refers to the automation of business processes through technology, with the goal of improving efficiency, reducing errors, and increasing productivity by eliminating manual and repetitive tasks. Over the past few years, the number of BPA platforms has increased, including both open-source and proprietary solutions. However, some challenges and limitations still exist related to the adoption of these solutions, such as vendor lock-in, limited UI/UX, limited integration, outdated technology stack, and lack of support for non-process features. To address these issues, this paper presents the AKIP platform, an open-source framework for developing process-aware information systems (PAISs) using code generation techniques. AKIP generates functional process-aware web applications from BPMN business process models, making it the only known software tool capable of generating fully functional process-aware web applications. To evaluate the effectiveness of the AKIP platform, a case study was conducted in the industry and six business processes automated into a process-oriented web application were analyzed in this paper. The study showed that the AKIP platform was able to generate a functional web application while supporting the automation of business processes with different model sizes and complexities. Furthermore, this study showed that even a team of professionals with little experience was able to produce such results by using the AKIP platform. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Research efforts in various fields related to Smart life increase constantly. There are very well-established fields like Smart home, Smart city, and Smart grid, and more emergent ones, like Smart farming, Smart university, and Smart tourism. Smart life intends to enhance human life and serves as an umbrella term for all Smart topics. However, the research domain of Smart life is very diverse and multifaceted. Our main goal is to systematize the existing research work around Smart life to provide direction for the development and maintenance of Smart artefacts and applications, thus, to move towards Smart life engineering. To achieve this goal, a mandatory step is to understand and organize all the different Smart topics studied in the scientific literature by means of a systematic mapping study. We analyzed 2341 existing Smart state-of-the-art works and research agendas. We propose a taxonomy of Smart applications, study their evolution over time, analyze their venues, specific terminology, and driving factors. The resulting overview is useful to researchers and practitioners to improve the positioning of their work and to identify the research opportunities in all types of smartness for humans, organizations, and society.

With data's evolution in terms of volume, variety, and velocity, information Systems (IS) administrators have to steadily adapt their data model and choose the best solution(s) to store and manage data in accordance with users' requirements. In this context, many existing solutions transform a source data model into a target one, but none of them leads the administrator to choose the most suitable model by offering a limited solution space automatically calculated and adapted to his needs. We propose ModelDrivenGuide, an automatic global approach for leading the model transformation process. It starts by transforming the conceptual model into a logical model, and it defines refinement rules that help to generate all possible data models. Our approach then relies on a heuristic to reduce the search space by avoiding cycles and redundancies. We also propose a formalisation of the denormalization process and we discuss the completeness and the complexity of our approach.

Software testing is an important part of engineering trustworthy information systems. End-to-end testing through Graphical User Interface (GUI) can be done manually, but it is a very time consuming and costly process. There are tools to capture or manually define scripts for automating regression testing through a GUI, but the main challenge is the high maintenance cost of the scripts when the GUI changes. In addition, GUIs tend to have a large state space, so creating scripts to cover all the possible paths and defining test oracles to check all the elements of all the states would be an enormous effort. This paper presents an approach to automatically explore a GUI while inferring state models that are used for action selection in run-time GUI test generation, implemented as an extension to the open source TESTAR tool. As an initial validation, we experiment on the impact of using various state abstraction mechanisms on the model inference and the performance of the implemented action selection algorithm based on the inferred model. Later, we analyse the challenges and provide future research directions on model inference and scriptless GUI testing.

Online freelancing markets connect buyers with workers globally to assign various categories of tasks. A worker's quality on the platform could be assessed by their past performance (reputation systems), skills, and experience. However, these methods cannot provide insights about the worker quality in case of newly acquired skills or newworkers participating on the platform. An endorsement system can be particularly instrumental in such cases by gathering and sharing endorsements of skills given to a worker by other workers. We investigate how endorsements received by a worker from their peers relate to their attributes. Drawing on social value orientation theory, we determine worker category from the past endorsement activity. Next, we apply the decision tree induction method to extract the worker attributes that are related to endorsement decisions across all worker categories. Finally, we frame our propositions based on the extracted rules.

Public sector organizations need to innovate their processes incrementally and radically to face political challenges. BPM ambidexterity, which is defined as the simultaneous pursuit of incremental and radical process innovation, provides a relevant lens to analyze this. Since there are only a few studies on ambidexterity in the public sector, we have conducted an embedded case study at an EU institution. We confirm that process characteristics, and the resulting culture and structure are critical enablers for the success of BPM initiatives. Departments with more mature practices for process optimization also turn out to be more open to radical process change. Moreover, temporal ambidexterity is the most common strategy to resolve the tension between incremental and radical innovation, while departments with a higher process orientation also show preference for contextual ambidexterity. We end with public sector guidelines on how to develop organizational capabilities in incremental and radical process innovation.
