Monitoring the state of currently running processes and reacting to deviations during runtime is a key challenge in business Process Management (BPM). The MAPE-K control loop describes four phases for approaching this challenge: Monitor, Analyze, Plan, Execute. In this paper, we present the ProGAN framework, an idea of an approach for implementing the monitor, analyze, and plan phases of MAPE-K. For this purpose, we leverage a deep learning architecture that builds upon Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs): The discriminator is used for monitoring the process in its environment by using sensor data and for detecting deviations w.r.t. the desired process state (monitor phase). The generator is used afterwards for analyzing the detected deviation and its symptoms as well as for adapting the current process to resolve the deviation and to restore the desired state. Both components are trained together by utilizing each other's feedback in a self-supervised way. We demonstrate the application of our approach for an exemplary scenario in the manufacturing domain.

This paper addresses a need for developing ex-post evaluation for datadriven decisions resulting from collaboration between humans and machines. As a first step of a design science project, we propose four design objectives for an ex-post evaluation solution, from the perspectives of both theory (concepts from the literature) and practice (through a case of industrial production planning): (1) incorporate multi-faceted decision evaluation criteria across the levels of environment, organization, and decision itself and (2) acknowledge temporal requirements of the decision contexts at hand, (3) define applicable mode(s) of collaboration between humans and machines to pursue collaborative rationality, and (4) enable a (potentially automated) feedback loop for learning from the (discrete or continuous) evaluations of past decisions. The design objectives contribute by supporting the development of solutions for the observed lack of ex-post methods for evaluating data-driven decisions to enhance human-machine collaboration in decision making. Our future research involves design and implementation efforts through on-going industry-academia cooperation.

This paper aims to analyze the performance of the preferences elicitation protocol for multi-issue negotiations based on the FITradeoff multicriteria method through simulation experiments. The negotiation protocol is conducted based on a dynamic set of packages, considering partial information about negotiators preferences. Efficiency of the agreement package can also be verified through a pareto optimality analysis. Simulation experiments involving negotiators were performed, supported by a web-based Electronic Negotiation System (ENS), through which the whole process is operationalized. The results of the experiments show that the FITradeoff-based negotiation protocol enables the parties to achieve an agreement without spending much cognitive effort in the preferences elicitation process. Moreover, in most cases, an agreement package can be faster due to the convergence mechanism derived from the dynamic set approach.

We suggest systems mining as the next step after process mining. Systems mining starts with a more careful investigation of runs, and constructs a detailed model of behavior, more subtle than classical process mining. The resulting model is enriched with information about data. From this model, a system model can be deduced in a systematic way.

This article studies what are the characteristics of a B2B SaaS freemium firm. Freemium in a B2B setting is an under-explored phenomenon whereas B2C SaaS freemium has been studied extensively. On the consumer side freemium has played a big role but freemium has only recently started to enter the B2B environment. Traditional, sales-led B2B SaaS companies have increasingly begun to turn to freemium and hence, it is important to understand how do they go about it. The empirical qualitative research was conducted as a case study and the data was gathered by interviewing European B2B SaaS freemium businesses. The data was analysed using qualitative thematic analysis and the coding approach used for identifying the concepts was open coding and axial coding. From the data three main success factor themes emerged that were evident in the B2B environment: customer success, internal enablers and external enablers.

Digital transformation (DT) has the potential to change our society toward the United Nation's sustainable development goals. However, developing software for the DT towards sustainability is a complex process that may entail an emphasis on optimization, eco-feedback, reflection, and participation. This paper contributes to a better understanding of how organizations navigate this complexity of different process views with a case study of a DT in district heating. Based on ten interviews with a software development company, eight interviews with a district heating supplier, and 14 interviews with consumers, we analyze the process views on their DT. This analysis shows how organizations navigate the different process views in a DT journey when encountering and solving problems. We conclude the paper by providing propositions on what navigating DT implies. Furthermore, we discuss how these insights can help practitioners navigate different process views and how our findings nuance the understanding of the DT process.

A deviation detection aims to detect deviating process instances, e.g., patients in the healthcare process and products in the manufacturing process. A business process of an organization is executed in various contextual situations, e.g., a COVID-19 pandemic in the case of hospitals and a lack of semiconductor chip shortage in the case of automobile companies. Thus, context-aware deviation detection is essential to provide relevant insights. However, existing work 1) does not provide a systematic way of incorporating various contexts, 2) is tailored to a specific approach without using an extensive pool of existing deviation detection techniques, and 3) does not distinguish positive and negative contexts that justify and refute deviation, respectively. In this work, we provide a framework to bridge the aforementioned gaps. We have implemented the proposed framework as a web service that can be extended to various contexts and deviation detection methods. We have evaluated the effectiveness of the proposed framework by conducting experiments using 255 different contextual scenarios.

Within a smart city concept, it is possible to combine a large number of information sources that has spatio-temporal characteristics. The complexity of such a combination lies in the high heterogeneity of information, the need to use spatial and temporal characteristics, as well as formats for presenting such information. To date, there are information platforms for smart city sources organization that allow combining heterogeneous data sources, however, in the process of combining, human participation is still required to establish an unambiguous correspondence and process space-time characteristics. The paper proposes an approach based on a microservice architecture, in which each data source is mapped to a microservice, which presents an ontological data model of the source. When forming a query, data is sampled from sources and integrated based on spatial characteristics for subsequent analysis. As an example, the paper provides an analysis of data on road accidents in St. Petersburg, Russia since 2019 in order to determine accident-dangerous sections of roads and the main causes of accidents. The result is accidents clusters obtained by combining accidents data, road types and weather conditions in the accidents area.

Prevention is a pervasive phenomenon. It is about blocking an effect before it happens or stopping it as it unfolds: vaccines prevent (the unfolding of) diseases;seat belts prevent events causing serious injuries;circuit breaks prevent the manifestation of overcurrents. Many disciplines in the information sciences deal with modeling and reasoning about prevention. Examples include risk and security management as well as medical and legal informatics. Having a proper conceptualization of this phenomenon is crucial for devising proper modeling mechanisms and tools to support these disciplines. Forming such a conceptualization is a matter of Formal Ontology. In fact, prevention and related notions have become a topic of interest in this area. In this paper, with the support of Unified Foundational Ontology (UFO), we conduct an ontological analysis of this and other related notions, namely, the notions of countermeasures and countermeasure mechanisms, including the notion of antidotes. As a result of this conceptual clarification process, we propose an ontology-based reusable module extending UFO and capturing the relations between these elements. Finally, we employ this module to address a few cases in risk management.

Many organizations have a long history with the use of ERP. However, organizations are increasingly turning to digital capabilities to transform operational processes and business models. Extant literature has increased our understanding of ERP, but we lack comprehensive insights into the evolving nature of ERP in the context of digital transformation. Through a review of articles from the AIS Basket of Eight IT journals, we identified digital capabilities associated with contemporary ERP across five categories. The identified capabilities foreground the evolving nature of ERP, resulting in the introduction of a definition for digital ERP (D-ERP) and a call for research studying the co-evolution of D-ERP and digital transformation.
