To enable process analysis based on an event log without compromising the privacy of individuals involved in process execution, a log may be anonymized. Such anonymization strives to transform a log so that it satisfies provable privacy guarantees, while largely maintaining its utility for process analysis. Existing techniques perform anonymization using simple, syntactic measures to identify suitable transformation operations. This way, the semantics of the activities referenced by the events in a trace are neglected, potentially leading to transformations in which events of unrelated activities are merged. To avoid this and incorporate the semantics of activities during anonymization, we propose to instead incorporate a distance measure based on feature learning. Specifically, we show how embeddings of events enable the definition of a distance measure for traces to guide event log anonymization. Our experiments with real-world data indicate that anonymization using this measure, compared to a syntactic one, yields logs that are closer to the original log in various dimensions and, hence, have higher utility for process analysis.

When an emergency such as an infectious disease or natural disaster occurs, a negative atmosphere will usually spread throughout society-increasing people's dissatisfaction and anxiety. Because of this, it is rather difficult to thoroughly investigate the actual situation. However, people can post sentimental comments on news sites, allowing for their attitudes either for or against the topics to be better observed. This study extracts the positive, negative, and neutral comments by using sentiment analysis. Then, the social atmosphere is visualized by calculating the approval rating of the comments. This methodology is demonstrated in articles regarding COVID-19. The large volume of comments about two topics, Go To campaigns and PCR tests, were analyzed by using ML-Ask to classify the comments into three categories: negative, positive, and neutral. The results indicate that the social atmosphere about the Go To campaigns tended to be negative.

Open-source process mining provides many algorithms for the analysis of event data which could be used to analyze mainstream processes (e.g., O2C, P2P, CRM). However, compared to commercial tools, they lack the performance and struggle to analyze large amounts of data. This paper presents PM4Py-GPU, a Python process mining library based on the NVIDIA RAPIDS framework. Thanks to the dataframe columnar storage and the high level of parallelism, a significant speed-up is achieved on classic process mining computations and processing activities.

One of the main limitations of blockchain systems based on Proof of Work is scalability, making them unsuitable for e-commerce and small payments. Currently, one of the principal directions to overcome the scalability issue is to use the so-called "layer two" solutions, like Lightning Network, where users can open channels and send payments through them. In this paper, we propose a Probabilistic Logic model of Lightning Network, and we show how it can be adopted to compute several properties of it. We conduct some experiments to prove the applicability of the model, rather than providing a comprehensive analysis of the network.

Internet of Thing (IoT) devices enable the collection and exchange of data over the Internet, whereas business Process Management (BPM) is concerned with the analysis, discovery, implementation, execution, monitoring, and evolution of business processes. By enriching BPM systems with IoT capabilities, data from the real world can be captured and utilized during process execution in order to improve online process monitoring and data-driven decision making. Furthermore, this integration fosters prescriptive process monitoring, e.g., by enabling IoTdriven process adaptions when deviations between the digital process and the one actually happening in the real world occur. As a prerequisite for exploiting these benefits, IoT-related aspects of business processes need to be modeled. To enable the use of sensors, actuators, and other IoT objects in combination with process models, we introduce a BPMN 2.0 extension with IoT-related artifacts and events. We provide a first evaluation of this extension by applying it in two case studies for modeling of IoT-aware processes.

Process models are designed to describe the required tasks to achieve a desired business goal. These models can be verified to be compliant with additional requirements, like regulations and business requirements. This means that process models can be designed and verified to behave according to some desired requirements. However, it is possible that some of the outcomes at runtime deviate from the design predictions of the model, which would render the model and the compliance verification obsolete. In this paper, we propose an approach aiming at detecting such runtime deviations through representing the tasks' outcomes as data ranges. When a deviation is detected, the approach re-evaluates compliance of the model given the unexpected outcomes during the execution, and if necessary and possible it adapts the remainder of the model's execution to preemptively avoid breaching the requirements.

The digital transformation of business processes faces a major hindrance due to the lack of trust and transparency. As blockchain and other distributed ledger (DLT) are considered key enabling technologies, there is a need for supporting tools which can deploy business models over smart contracts in order to leverage these decentralized platforms. Existing blockchain-based business Process Management (BPM) solutions support various blockchain platforms and different types of modelling language, i.e., Ethereum and business Process Model Notation (BPMN). However, the majority of these methods do not support processes with time events and inclusive gateways due to severe limitations imposed by smart contract programming languages. In other words, mainstream blockchain platforms do not offer a straightforward way to execute a transaction at a later time. To overcome these aforementioned issues, we propose an engine called Pupa, a blockchain-based decentralized protocol to translate business processes with time events and inclusive gateways to smart contracts. Pupa accomplishes this by adding task feature to time events, check function on top of activities succeeding time events and, listening variables to sequence flow forking or joining inclusive gateways. We implemented Pupa by extending Caterpillar, an existing BPMN solution using Solidity and Ethereum, and evaluated the performance of our proposed engine and its generated smart contracts with a baseline solution. Our results show that Pupa is competitive with baseline solutions in terms of cost and performance, while offering additional advantages in terms of decentralization and supporting additional BPMN semantics.

business process simulation is a methodology that enables analysts to run the process in different scenarios, compare the performances and consequently provide indications into how to improve a business process. Process simulation requires one to provide a simulation model, which should accurately reflect reality to ensure the reliability of the simulation findings. This paper proposes a framework to assess the extent to which a simulation model reflects reality and to pinpoint how to reduce the distance. The starting point is a business simulation model, along with a real event log that records actual executions of the business process being simulated and analyzed. In a nutshell, the idea is to simulate the process, thus obtaining a simulation log, which is subsequently compared with the real event log. A decision tree is built, using the vector of features that represent the behavioral characteristics of log traces. The tree aims to classify traces as belonging to the real and simulated event logs, and the discriminating features encode the difference between reality, represented in the real event log, and the simulation model, represented in the simulated event logs. These features provide actionable insights into how to repair simulation models to become closer to reality. The technique has been assessed on a real-life process for which the literature provides a real event log and a simulation model. The results of the evaluation show that our framework increases the accuracy of the given initial simulation model to better reflect reality.

The evaluation of text summaries remains a challenging task despite the large number of studies in this field for more than two decades. This paper describes an automatic method for assessing Arabic text summaries. In fact, the proposed method will predict the "Overall Responsiveness" manual score, which is a combination of the content and the linguistic quality of a summary. To predict this manual score, we aggregate, with a regression function, three types of features: lexical similarity features, semantic similarity features and linguistic features. Semantic features include multiple semantic similarity scores based on Bert model. While linguistic features are based on the calculation of entropy scores. To calculate the similarity between a candidate summary and a reference summary, we begin by doing an exact match between n-grams. For the unmatched n-grams, we present them as Bert vectors, and then we compute the similarity between Bert vectors. The proposed method yielded competitive results compared to metrics based on lexical similarity such as ROUGE.

Producing a complete, formal specification for an information system (IS) has several important advantages: Once we have a formal functional specification of an IS, the specification can serve as a solid starting point for several other development steps, such as generating default 'input forms', user stories, and default 'menus' per role. It also provides a potential means to prove (additional) state properties. Moreover, the specification can also serve as a 'quick reference guide' for the initiates working with the system. In this paper we are studying the practical suitability and appropriateness of the notion of information machine as means for formally specifying functional requirements. In this feasibility study we illustrate this by an example which is large and subtle enough to demonstrate how our approach works. It also shows the scalability and the ease of change. The specifications are implementation-independent (as it ought to be). Nevertheless we explain and illustrate how to generate a default implementation.
