So far, the biggest challenge for a comprehensive business information Systems (BIS) education curriculum was the fast-changing nature of its target market and the resulting demand for a combination of up-to-date technical knowledge, organization-centred mindset, and adaptive skills. However, advances in pedagogical methods, changes in the skills of high-school graduates, and widening online options in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic brought on a new set of expectations. This situation may be considered an opportunity to address the threat of potentially increasing mismatch and misalignment between competences required by the IS industry labour market and current training contents offered and methods used by higher education institutions. This paper provides a systematic and comprehensive overview of the challenges BIS programs have to face and address. It considers everyday experiences of BIS educators and current best practices as starting point. Then provides an overview of employer and alumni opinion, as well as reviews up-to-date teaching methods related to teaching soft computer skills. It also considers the requirements and opportunities related to an increasingly online-centred situation. Based on these challenges the paper lays down the foundation for a potential curriculum design approach intended to address all of the above issues in an integrated framework.

Robotic process automation has been maturing with significant speed and organizations that started using RPA during the past years now automate the "low hanging fruit" with the best return on investment. The organizations strive to utilize RPA to get a higher value. However, the deployment of RPA on multiple processes is complex and demanding in terms of costs and resources. In this research, we focused on the reduction of the RPA bot duration by using the applications' API in the RPA automation. We compared the duration of RPA bots on three processes. The three processes were automated with RPA technology via GUI and also via API. The results indisputably show that using API in RPA automation has a positive impact on its duration. RPA bot using API was, in some cases, ten times faster than RPA bot using GUI. The average duration change of using API against GUI was in the interval from 84.01% to 91.87%. This change shows the enormous acceleration of RPA bot and the impactful benefits of the use of API in RPA automation of processes. We may thus conclude that API is a good complement to RPA automation. RPA developers and RPA architects should use API when it is possible for better utilization of RPA robots.

At process-aware information systems, it is sometimes necessary to deviate from the modelled business process. For instance, in exceptional cases or to correct mistakes, users shall be able to jump dynamically forward and backward in the process. Until now, this topic was hardly respected in scientific literature and it is insufficiently realized in commercial process engines. In this paper, very comprehensive requirements and the expected behavior of a process engine are presented for such dynamic jumps during run-time of a business process. The approach does not only respect forward and backward jumps within sequences of activities but also jumps into and out of parallel branches, conditional branches, and within loops. In addition, configuration options allow to define the desired behavior: For instance, activities bypassed by a forward jump may be caught up later on. As well, it is configurable whether activities that were already executed earlier, shall be repeated after a backward jump or whether their results (output data) shall be reused. Furthermore, it is discussed when and by whom such configuration options may be defined.

An important aspect of understanding written language is recognising and understanding events described in a document. Each event is usually associated with a specific time or time period when it occurred. Humans naturally understand the time of each event based on our common sense and the relations between the events, expressed in the documents. In our work we will explore and implement a system for automated extraction of temporal relations between the events in a document as well as of additional attributes like date, time, duration etc. for placing the events in time. Our system will use the extracted information to build a graph representing the events seen in a document. We will also combine the temporal knowledge over multiple documents to build a global knowledge base that will serve as a collection of common sense about the temporal aspect of common events, allowing the system to use the gathered knowledge about the events to derive information not explicitly expressed in the document.

Pair programming is a technique where two programmers work together. This technique offers benefits such as improved quality of the code, faster task completion, and increased participant satisfaction. Existing research in business Process Management has not studied the advantages of pair process modeling in comparison to individual modeling. In this paper, we focus on the effect of conducting modeling tasks in pairs on process model quality and participants' satisfaction. In an experiment, we let novice modelers perform modeling tasks individually and in pairs. Contrary to pair programming findings, we could not statistically support that pair modeling improves the process model's quality. Similar to pair programming, the experiment did reveal that the participants are highly satisfied when performing modeling tasks in pairs. Considering this result, instructors or managers may want to use the pair setup for training purposes.

Brand loyalty factors are generally explained by product/service features like design and usability. However, consumers may be attracted to superficial functionality and design, but easily switch brands when another company's product/service with higher functionality and a more fashionable design appears. If a consumer remains loyal to a brand, it is because they understand, sympathize with, and value the brand's concept. Accordingly, the present study hypothesized that consumers who recall a brand concept are more likely to exhibit loyalty than consumers who recall specific features, such as design. From the results of an online survey of consumers with Dyson vacuum cleaners in the Japanese market, the factors of brand loyalty were evaluated using structural equation modeling. As a result, no significant effect was confirmed for the design, which is generally claimed to be highly evaluated in this brand. In contrast, the brand concept claimed in this study was confirmed to have a significant positive effect. Companies should first reaffirm the importance of brand concepts. There are still many product/service brands that are equipped with functions and designs, while the brand concept remains ambiguous. Hence, the concept recall index should be emphasized in brand management.

Taking into account the changes occurring in the aftermath of the Covid-19 crisis and taking the perspective of students from generation Z currently entering the labour market, the aim of this article is to assess the increase in the importance of competencies for knowledge management on the impact of process orientation. The empirical research was conducted using an online survey method at two leading universities in Poland in economic education, and complete data were collected from 711 generation Z students. They were analysed using the structural equation modelling method. The results show that the increase in the importance of competencies for knowledge management following the Covid-19 crisis will affect the change of the five of six process orientation components, i.e. defining business processes more clearly, allocating resources to a greater extent based on business processes, broader setting of specific performance targets for different business processes, measuring the outcome of different business processes more closely and more unambiguous designation of process owners. Only in the case of rewarding employees based on the implementation of business processes inwhich they are involved, students from generation Z do not see the impact of the increasing importance of competencies for knowledge management.

The insurgence of the COVID pandemic calls for mass vaccination campaigns worldwide. Pharmaceutical companies struggle to ramp up their production to meet the demand for vaccines but cannot always guarantee a perfectly regular delivery schedule. On the other hand, governments must devise plans to have most of their population vaccinated in the shortest possible time and have the vaccine booster administered after a precise time interval. The combination of delivery uncertainties and those time requirements may make such planning difficult. In this paper, we propose several heuristic strategies to meet those requirements in the face of delivery uncertainties. The outcome of those strategies is a daily vaccination plan that suggests how many initial doses and boosters can be administered each day. We compare the results with the optimal plan obtained through linear programming, which however assumes that we know in advance the whole delivery schedule. As for performance metrics, we consider both the vaccination time (which has to be as low as possible) and the balance between vaccination capacities over time (which has to be as uniform as possible). The strategies achieving the best trade-off between those competing requirements turn out to be the q-days ahead strategies, which put aside doses to guarantee that we do not run out of stock on just the next q days. Increasing the look-ahead period, i.e. q, allows to achieve a lower number of out-of-stock days, though worsening the other performance indicators.

RPA technologies allow the automation of repeated processes through indirect or direct instruction from the end-user. While declarative authoring techniques provide a powerful tool to scale up process complexity with RPA elements, often such techniques are difficult to use without expertise. In this work, we will explore systems (in the context of web service composition and goal-oriented conversational agents) that both consumers and developers can interact with, in natural language, to compose RPA elements that demonstrate emergent intelligence as a composition of smaller units of automation. We will also discuss the overhead in authoring such systems, and potential learning opportunities in reducing said overhead. Finally, we will explore issues of explainability for the developer and transparency of dynamic compositions for the consumer in dealing with such systems with aggregated automation.

The desired context-aware servicing of user needs assumes adequately capturing the user situation, which in turn is often done using sensors. In most cases, the sensor-driven extraction of context information is done counting on predefined rules that concern Boolean expressions directly referring to data values for the sake of evaluating the user situation. Further, sensors would be of limited use when considering context indicators (such as intentions) that are not "physical". Inspired by those challenges, we address the training-data-driven extraction of context information, opting for considering Bayesian Modeling and particularly the Naive Bayesian Classification Approach because it is: (i) effective as it concerns predictions that are based on training data;(ii) rarely misleading in comparatively "simple" cases, which holds for most real-life cases, as opposed to natural-science-related cases where numerous possible outcomes may apply to any situation;(iii) easily applicable in terms of hardware and software capabilities. Hence, we study the adequacy and usefulness of applying probabilistic approaches together with rules, in establishing and managing the extraction of context information that in turn is needed for the appropriate context-aware servicing of user needs.
