Blockchain technology presently permeates multiple industries, resulting in an increasing number of agents (primarily end-users and engineers) interacting with it in a variety of contexts. This, in turn, has introduced the practical need for a sufficient tooling ecosystem for blockchain solutions testing and evaluation under secure environment conditions. To that end, this study presents a robust framework for the creation and management of customisable, persistent, private, scalable blockchain environments that fulfill precisely the need for live sandbox platforms with on-chain interaction capabilities. We extend the concept of local chain forking, emphasising the limitations of existing tooling and methodologies and propose how our framework mitigates identified weaknesses and bridges some of the resulting gaps in desirable non-functional attributes. We offer a reference implementation for our framework and discuss how it can be applicable to a broad array of DevOps and securityoriented Use Cases. Finally, emerging challenges are discussed and potential directions for further research are drawn.

Vanbreda Risk & Benefits, a large Belgian insurance broker and risk consultant, allocates a substantial amount of time and resources to answer contract related questions from customers. This requires employees to manually search the relevant parameters in the contracts. In this paper, a solution is proposed and evaluated that automatically extracts insurance parameters from contracts using regular expressions and Natural Language processing. While Natural Language processing has been used in insurance for optimising premiums, detecting fraudulent claims, or underwriting, limited work has been done regarding parameter extraction. The proposed solution has been developed on 127 different contracts and two different contract types in terms of accuracy and time performance. Moreover, the automatic parameter extraction has been compared to manual parameter extraction. We conclude that automatic parameter extraction using regular expressions achieves better accuracy than manual extraction on top of being significantly faster, allowing Vanbreda Risk & Benefits to invest more time into providing better customer service.

Over the last few years, companies' investment in new AI systems has seen a strong and constant progression. However, except for the BigTech, the use of AI is still marginal at this stage, and seems to spark cautiousness and apprehension. A potential reason for this hesitation may be linked to a lack of trust related in particular to the so-called black box AI technologies such as deep learning. This is why our research objective is to explore the effects of explainability on trust in these new AI-based digital systems with which the users can either interact or directly accept its results in case of fully autonomous system. More precisely, in the perspective of an industrialized use of AI, we would like to study the role of explainability for stakeholders in the decision-making process as well as in value creation.

With the growing number of devices, sensors and digital systems, data logs may become uncertain due to, e.g., sensor reading inaccuracies or incorrect interpretation of readings by processing programs. At times, such uncertainties can be captured stochastically, especially when using probabilistic data classification models. In this work we focus on conformance checking, which compares a process model with an event log, when event logs are stochastically known. Building on existing alignment-based conformance checking fundamentals, we mathematically define a stochastic trace model, a stochastic synchronous product, and a cost function that reflects the uncertainty of events in a log. Then, we search for an optimal alignment over the reachability graph of the stochastic synchronous product for finding an optimal alignment between a model and a stochastic process observation. Via structured experiments with two well-known process mining benchmarks, we explore the behavior of the suggested stochastic conformance checking approach and compare it to a standard alignment-based approach as well as to an approach that creates a lower bound on performance. We envision the proposed stochastic conformance checking approach as a viable process mining component for future analysis of stochastic event logs.

This article presents the results of a literature review on business Process Management in the countries of Central Eastern Europe, authored by researchers affiliated to those countries. In line with the used review protocol, our study comprises 159 journal articles analyzed from a meta-perspective, including 60 empirical articles that underwent content-based analysis. While researching BPM in CEE countries, we diagnosed Management as the most-studied phenomenon among the three main areas of BPM alongside Foundations and Engineering. Among the different characteristics of BPM research diagnosed, we identified, as examples, research developments over time, and, Croatia and Slovenia as the nations most involved in BPM research. In order to identify the research gap regarding the BPM capabilities understudy, and to engage researchers in new trends combining BPM with digitalization, we used the original and updated core elements of the BPM framework. We have shown that BPM methods are the most tested, followed by Governance and Strategy Alignment. As in previous studies, elements of People and Culture are under researched. The inclusion of enhanced and novel BPM capabilities in light of digitalization is in the very early stages of research in CEE. Our studies show apparent research gaps that should be filled in line with the idea of contextual intelligence, justifying the new questions on BPM that researchers in CEE countries may post. This approach allows the drawing of new conclusions and thus contributes to the development of the BPM body of knowledge.

Content Management Systems (CMSs) are the most popular tool when it comes to create and publish content across the web. Recently, CMSs have evolved, becoming headless. Content served by a headless CMS aims to be consumed by other applications and services through REST APIs rather than by human users through a web browser. This evolution has enabled CMSs to become a notorious source of content to be used in a variety of contexts beyond pure web navigation. As such, CMS have become an important component of many information systems. Unfortunately, we still lack the tools to properly discover and manage the information stored in a CMS, often highly customized to the needs of a specific domain. Currently, this is mostly a time-consuming and error-prone manual process. In this paper, we propose a model-based framework to facilitate the integration of headless CMSs in software development processes. Our framework is able to discover and explicitly represent the information schema behind the CMS. This facilitates designing the interaction between the CMS model and other components consuming that information. These interactions are then generated as part of a middleware library that offers platform-agnostic access to the CMS to all the client applications. The complete framework is open-source and available online.

Increasingly digital workplaces enable advanced people analytics (PA) that can improve work, but also implicate privacy risks for employees. These systems often depend on employees sharing their data voluntarily. Thus, to leverage the potential benefits of PA, companies have to manage employees' disclosure decision. In literature, we identify two main strategies: increase awareness or apply appeal strategies. While increased awareness may lead to more conservative data handling, appeal strategies can promote data sharing. Yet, to our knowledge, no systematic overview of appeal strategies for PA exists. Thus, we develop an initial taxonomy of strategies based on a systematic literature review and interviews with 18 experts. We describe strategies in the dimensions of values, benefits, and incentives. Thereby, we present concrete options to increase the appeal of PA for employees.

Integration platforms are modern way to governance, develop and deploy integrations, the connections and data transferring between systems. Integration platforms can be build as an in-house solution, but nowadays the more common way is to buy enterprise integration platforms as a service (EiPaaS/iPaaS) product. However, integration platforms are evolving fast and in our literature review we found out that the definition in the academic research about enterprise integration platforms as a service is outdated. For that, we created a new definition to describe more the capabilities, importance and evolution of enterprise integration platforms as a service by analyzing the leading EiPaaS product descriptions. Our results helps academics and companies gain further understanding about the enterprise integration platforms as a service solutions.

Industry 4.0, characterized by the development of automation and data exchanging technologies, has contributed to an increase in the volume of data, generated from various data sources, with great speed and variety. Organizations need to collect, store, process, and analyse this data in order to extract meaningful insights from these vast amounts of data. By overcoming these challenges imposed by what is currently known as Big Data, organizations take a step towards optimizing business processes. This paper proposes a Big Data Analytics architecture as an artefact for the integration of historical data - from the organizational business processes - and predictive data - obtained by the use of Machine Learning models -, providing an advanced data analytics environment for decision support. To support data integration in a Big Data Warehouse, a data modelling method is also proposed. These proposals were implemented and validated with a demonstration case in a multinational organization, Bosch Car Multimedia in Braga. The obtained results highlight the ability to take advantage of large amounts of historical data enhanced with predictions that support complex decision support scenarios.

Extended Reality (XR) systems are complex applications that have emerged in a wide variety of domains, such as computer games and medical practice. Testing XR software is mainly done manually by human testers, which implies a high cost in terms of time and money. Current automated testing approaches for XR systems consist of rudimentary capture and replay of scripts. However, this approach only works for simple test scenarios. Moreover, it is well-known that the scripts break easily each time the XR system is changed. There are research projects aimed at using autonomous agents that will follow scripted instructions to test XR functionalities. Nonetheless, using only scripted testing techniques, it is difficult and expensive to tackle the challenges of testing XR systems. This thesis is focus on the use of automated scriptless testing for XR systems. This way we help to reduce part of the manual testing effort and complement the scripted techniques.
