Many real-world optimization problems are online by nature, requiring provably-good decisions that need to be made in the present without knowing the future. At the heart of such decisions are online algorithms. The input to an online algorithm is not given all at once but arrives in portions over time. The online algorithm reacts to each arriving portion while targeting the optimization objective against the entire input. In this paper, we consider a well-established branch of online optimization problems in which some input portions can be rejected by paying an associated penalty and these penalties are incorporated into the objective function. We study the online prize-collecting variants of three well-known optimization problems: Connected Dominating Set, Vertex Cover, and Non-metric Facility Location, and propose online algorithms for these variants, measured using the competitive analysis framework. The latter compares, in the worst case, the performance of the online algorithm to the optimal offline solution constructed given all the input sequence at once. Furthermore, we extend the study of prize-collecting optimizations problems to the leasing setting in which resources are leased, rather than bought, for different durations and prices.

Testing is an inevitable part of software development. Agile software development model follows a quick build, test, fix, and deliver methodology. In agile framework, testing is considered as a light-weight task as compare to the plan-driven methodologies where testing is exhaustively performed. To bridge the gap between traditional and agile testing frameworks, we propose a Blue-Box testing (BBT) technique. BBT includes both white-box and black-box test cases to generate a robust test suite which ensures the maximum coverage. Code coverage is one of the best metrics to determine the quality of a software system. In the article, we use Modified Condition/Decision Coverage (MC/DC) for evaluation of test cases and programs undertaken. Our experimental results show, on an average, 22.79% better code coverage is obtained as compare to other considered white-box and black-box testing techniques using our BBT method.

An increasing number of prosumers participate in the energy market, either by offering flexibility or selling surplus energy. This is made possible through EU directives for electricity transactions in smart grids. The directives provide guidelines for individual and aggregated transactions, allowing customers to sell or share electric surplus at the local level or to the national grid. This is seen as an important part of the transition to renewable energy. In this paper, we introduce blockchain as a mechanism for handling decentralized transactions in smart grids. Blockchain technology allows for a flexible peer-to-peer trading mechanism. It can handle transmission and distribution management with energy flow optimization and grid infrastructure security, prosumer and microgrid management with different trading and pricing mechanisms, and interactive load between electric vehicles and grid. We describe blockchain technology, provide a survey of blockchain applications in the energy sector, emphasize the achievements and limitations of this technology in EU research studies and industrial projects, and underline the findings of the Smart-MLA project in this field.

The Learning Management System (LMS) tries to resolve the multiple challenges that occur due to limits of time, location, and frequency of teacher-student interactions. As a tool in the e- learning process, the LMS provides several benefits that can help overcome problems that often occur during the learning process. However, the current deployment of LMS as a learning medium still has its limitations such as low engagement and motivation, secure documents, certification, and exam verification to replace a cumbersome manual process, and ultimately personalization of features that relevant to students' requirements. Recently, some new technologies developed as recent trends to tackle the various difficulties and challenges relevant to these issues and obstacles. In this sense, the Gamification design boosted users' interaction and engagement with the online system by adding a new game concept. Similarly, blockchain technology improves the security of online document exchange, verification, and storage. Ultimately, learning analytics demonstrated to allow the personalization of online platforms based on interactions and data logs. In this work, we studied how combining these strategies might boost the LMS performance and tackle existing issues and problems. To do that, we employed a design science methodology as a rigor innovation strategy in digital innovation. The results reveal encouraging results of the new systems (LMSD) implementation in Dubai's British university.

Participatory agent-based modelling (ABM) can help bring the benefits of simulation to domain users by actively involving stakeholders in the development process. Collaboration in enterprise modelling can improve the model developer's understanding of the domain and therefore improve the effectiveness of domain analysis. Where many agent-oriented methodologies focus on the development of one-off models, domain-specific modelling languages (DSML) can improve the re-use of concepts identified in domain analysis across multiple case studies and expose modelling concepts in domain-appropriate terms, increasing model accessibility. To realise the benefits of DSMLs we need to understand how DSML development can be incorporated into typical agent-based modelling. In this paper we discuss existing methodologies for ABM development and DSML development, and we discuss the benefits merging the two can bring. We present a methodology for DSML-assisted participatory agent-based modelling, and support the methodology with a case study-a modelling exercise conducted in collaboration with a hospital emergency department on the topic of infection control for COVID-19 and Influenza.

The premise of this paper is that compliance with Trustworthy AI governance best practices and regulatory frameworks is an inherently fragmented process spanning across diverse organizational units, external stakeholders, and systems of record, resulting in process uncertainties and in compliance gaps that may expose organizations to reputational and regulatory risks. Moreover, there are complexities associated with meeting the specific dimensions of Trustworthy AI best practices such as data governance, conformance testing, quality assurance of AI model behaviors, transparency, accountability, and confidentiality requirements. These processes involve multiple steps, hand-offs, re-works, and human-in-the-loop oversight. In this paper, we demonstrate that process mining can provide a useful framework for gaining fact-based visibility to AI compliance process execution, surfacing compliance bottlenecks, and providing for an automated approach to analyze, remediate and monitor uncertainty in AI regulatory compliance processes.

Blockchain technology offers a vast amount of possible applications, which include the decentralization of platforms among many others. That decentralization can enable decentralized governance of platforms, which in turn may lead to a decentralized governance structure in which the rights to make decisions about the platform are decentralized. It remains unclear how decentralized the platform governance really is solely based on its possibility and intention to decentralize. We analyze how decentralized the governance structures of in reality occurring platforms are. For this we collected data of 16 platforms which are based on the Ethereum blockchain. These platforms were analyzed in terms of token and transaction distribution as well as transaction behavior. This allowed us to examine the distribution of platform resources associated with the governance structure. As a result, we could identify that not yet decentralized governance structures becomes more decentralized. Additionally, we enhance the knowledge on the development of the decentralization of platform resources.

The importance of software in the modern world entails the need to develop technologies that make the software development process more agile. Agile software development approaches have been proposed to deal with constant changes in project requirements. In Scrum, the Product Owner manages such changes so that the developed software brings significant value to the customers. However, there are potential risks involved in Product Owner responsibilities that, if not properly managed, can lead to project failure and significant financial losses. In this paper, we introduce RIMPRO-AST, an automated tool support to manage risks involving the product owner. The automation of risk management processes is crucial since the lack of computational support imposes barriers to the success of risk management activities in agile projects. RIMPRO-AST supports the process defined in RIMPRO risk management framework to guide Scrum teams to manage risks involving Product Owner roles. The results obtained through the evaluation of RIMPRO-AST with potential users indicate its effectiveness in speeding up and controlling risk management activities. Therefore, our study demonstrates that RIMPRO-AST can be used to minimize the threats and their risks and maximize the opportunities that might arise throughout Scrum software development projects.

This study aims to examine the impact of social media knowledge discussion groups (SMKDGs) on creativity through knowledge utilization, and the impact of SMKDGs on employee creativity through information elaboration in a multi-level model. In addition, the moderating effect of knowledge-oriented leadership (KOL) was also tested at two levels. Multisource and multi-wave data were collected from 356 employees in 61 workgroups and used for empirical analysis. The results support our hypothesis and confirm the mediating role of knowledge utilization and information elaboration at two levels. In addition, KOL positively moderates the mediating effects of knowledge utilization and information elaboration at both levels. These findings complement research on SMKDGs and creativity and have instructive value for teams to effectively use social media to enhance the team and employee creativity in the future.

Despite the growth of Artificial Intelligence (AI) implementation in operational workplace processes, there is limited understanding of its effects at the micro-individual and meso-team levels in government sector organisations. This study examines the impacts of implementing AI within a single case study of a governmental entity in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Qualitative data was collected through semi-structured interviews with 15 participants and analysed using thematic analysis. The findings identify AI implementation as an incremental process requiring organisational leaders' adequate understanding of change management. AI has a considerable influence on the individual as it improves the ability of employees to carry out their work and increases their autonomy, competence, relatedness and ultimately productivity. It also enhanced team performance through efficient team communication and cooperative decision-making. The findings add to our understanding of the effects of AI implementation at the individual and team levels and signal the need for organisations to embrace change management approaches to support the transition to AI-enabled operations.
