Context: Software startups are software-intensive early phase companies with high growth rates. Previous researchers regarded startups' time to market as short and decisive in establishing the product/service success. This led to shortcuts in software engineering decisions. Researchers in previous investigations documented a high accumulation of technical debt (TD) in early startup phases. However, we found little evidence in the literature concerning TD when startups transition to the growth phase. Aim: Our goal was to evaluate how the transition from early to growth phases affects TD perception in software startups. Methodology: We conducted a pilot study guided by semi-structured interviews from multiple software startup cases. Results: We identified the four following dimensions: (1) managing, (2) accepting, (3) avoiding, and (4) ignoring TD. Contribution: Our study will allow practitioners to address TD in growth-phase software startups. Future researchers can benefit from our findings by conducting exploratory studies and providing educated recommendations.

While the Decision Model and Notation standard (DMN) is evolving into an increasingly popular standard for modelling decision logic, a wealth of recent research unfortunately shows that DMN modelling is prone to various types of human modelling errors. As such errors may lead to incorrect decision-making or even compliance breaches, this raises a strong need for modelling tools to offer error verification capabilities, that can pin-point potential modelling errors and subsequently alert the user. Currently, it is however still unclear to which extent the state-of-the-art modelling tools can detect these errors. Such insights are however strongly needed to assess the current support for modellers in the quality assurance of DMN models, and to guide future research. In this report, we therefore conduct an in-depth DMN tool analysis in regard to DMN verification capabilities. Our results indicate that the current coverage of verification capabilities in industrial tools is alarmingly low, and there needs to be urgent work on extending existing approaches.

The industry competition has changed the way software is managed, developed, and delivered over the years. Some of the approaches that emerged to continuously deliver software to users are Continuous Delivery (CDE) and Continuous Deployment (CD). CDE is the ability to get software functionalities, of any kind, into the hands of users, in small batches, and short cycles. In CD, every change that passes all stages of the production pipeline is released to customers without human intervention. The agility proposed by the Continuous Delivery and Continuous Deployment approaches may introduce some challenges to the software development life-cycle. Some of these challenges are related to the Software Configuration Management process and the communication of software changes to relevant stakeholders such as operations teams. In order to better understand which communication practices are used to communicate software changes in environments where Continuous Delivery or Continuous Deployment were adopted, a systematic literature review and an empirical study with global companies were performed, which allowed us to consolidate a collection of communication practices for communicating software changes that could benefit companies that already adopted or are planning to implement continuous software delivery practices.

A major dimension for assessing organizational performance is efficiency, i.e., the amount of output obtained from a given input. Organizational efficiency is closely connected to business process efficiency. Inefficiently executed processes may consume a lot of resources and still not achieve their internal goals. Because "you cannot improve what you cannot measure", process mining tools try to quantify process inefficiency with rather basic indicators, which provide only limited information. This paper introduces an approach that measures process inefficiencies in the control flow, taking factors like an activity's intended position in the trace and the allowed number of repetitions into account. Our evaluation results show that the process performance indicators that our approach defines capture aspects of process inefficiency that have not been taken into account in the baseline indicator that is currently provided in process mining tools.

The main purpose of this study is to empirically explore the e-learning behavior of university students in distance learning during the Corona-Pandemic to gain deeper insights that can help to develop more individualized e-learning practices. Based on a dataset of 164 active and former students from different study programs, universities, and semesters, we first apply factor analysis to identify 24 relevant learning factors regarding their mental progress, social aspects, and sensory perception. These factors, in turn, served as the basis for a cluster analysis, in which the students were classified into eight distinct e-learning clusters representing the taxonomy of different e-learning styles in distance learning. Based on the findings, we highlight the implications for research and practice and derived a set of seven propositions for appropriate teaching and learning strategies for distance learning. These propositions could help to address the individual digital needs of the students in a more effective manner.

Case management is an approach for handling business processes that are knowledge-intensive. The knowledge work performed on case management schemas is driven by operational goals. Typically, organizational goals and their interdependencies are specified in goal models. A goal model defines how higher-level goals are achieved by lower-level goals. While goals have been related to classical activity-centric process models, the relation between declarative data-centric case management schemas and goal models has not yet been explored. This paper presents a structural approach to check consistency of a goal model and a declarative case management schema. The approach is supported by a tool and evaluated in a case study.

Wearable Fitness Trackers (WFTs) could both lead to healthier lifestyles and be suitable for tracking infectious diseases. However, though they have existed for many years they are still not prevalent. We developed a research model which was theoretically embedded in technology acceptance research, then analyzed the data collected through a survey of 207 WFT users and non-users. Our findings suggest that, in respect to both users and non-users, perceived value is the strongest driver of usage intention. Furthermore, we found significant differences between male and female participants. Unfortunately, we were not able to confirm a relation between Covid-19 awareness and WFT usage intention. Our study provides relevant findings to manufacturers and insights into the consumer WFT needs.

Companies are constantly facing new challenges through digital technologies, as they can cause rapid changes in their business environment. Digital innovations can offer the opportunity to gain competitive advantages, but in practice, companies often struggle to create the conditions for this. Developing a culture for digital innovation is an important capability that companies need to build. It includes appropriate organizational structures, working methods, skills, and new ways of thinking in the innovation process. This has been explored in previous research at a high level of abstraction. Our paper complements past findings with a detailed study of what activities companies are doing in practice and what methods they are using to support these activities to pave the way for digital innovation in their organization. For this purpose, a multiple-case study has been conducted. As a theoretical basis, we use the dynamic capability approach. We obtain how the capability for developing a digital culture is substantiated by microfoundations and underlying activities.

The rise of digital technologies is a macro trend, forcing organizations to transform digitally. This so-called digital transformation (DT) is affecting the field of higher education, too. Higher education institutions (HEI) digitalize internal processes and offer digitally-enabled education services. Different types of barriers are challenging a successful DT and need to be mastered. Our study follows a longitudinal research design by surveying different student cohorts in the same courses. Before the pandemic, we identified the barriers to DT and transferred them into a research model. Pre-pandemic, we surveyed the influence of barriers perceived by management students on the DT process of their HEI. Taking the pandemic as a solid external driver on DT, we examined students' intra-pandemic perception in the same courses as the pre-pandemic analysis. With pre-pandemic data, the projection explains over 50% of the adjustment problems of the DT process. Based on intra-pandemic data, the explanation decreases to 45%. Hypothetically, we expected a better explanation degree as an impact of the pandemic. Interestingly, results indicate that intra-pandemic perceptions got more complex and, therefore, less significant.

Despite the growing interest in ecosystems, research on ecosystem-level value distribution is still scant. Value creation and different value dimensions have a relatively wide knowledge base in the context of dyadic relationships and networks. However, the existing ecosystem literature does not recognize these dimensions at the ecosystem level. This article proposes an initial framework for assessing the value, particularly at the ecosystem level. Furthermore, the majority of the existing literature focuses merely on financial and functional values. This framework denotes also social, emotional, and epistemic dimensions of value. The framework is built as a constructive process. This study presents a theoretically founded iterative design phase followed by the first empirical test with one case ecosystem. The findings indicate the value balance exists in a case ecosystem, which is in a stable and established state. The article also proposes the next steps to develop the framework further. These include e.g. testing the framework with ecosystems, which are in more volatile phases (i.e. pioneering or renewal phase) and developing a measurement regime for evaluating the importance of each different value dimension.
