In many parts of the world, water scarcity, climate change phenomenon, and simultaneously, increasing water demand from various stakeholders have led to serious conflicts over water and related environmental issues. These serious conflicts are lengthy in time, dynamic in nature, and very complex in essence. A key feature of this type of conflict, which is often ignored, is that in addition to the interaction among humans, the interaction between human and nature plays a significant role. In other words, such conflicts involve both human and natural systems as well as the interactions between them. Thus, they are considered as a Coupled Human and Natural System (CHANS) for which, its concepts and framework can be used to evaluate such complex conflicts. This research effort aims at presenting the CHANS approach and its core concepts for better study of the water and environmental conflicts that are both dynamic in nature and complex in essence. The use of CHANS to the conflict scrutiny provides valuable insights that help in achieving a broader understanding of water-environmental conflicts. The case study of the Urmia Lake conflict as a real-world controversy is used to show the CHANS' capabilities in dealing with the dynamics and complexities of water and environmental conflicts and highlighting their main features. The resulting outcomes of the proposed approach clearly indicate that for achieving a more comprehensive understanding as well as more sustainable management of growing water-environmental conflicts, both human and natural dimensions and their interactions must be simultaneously considered.

Companies across domains are rapidly engaged in shifting computational power and intelligence from centralized cloud to fully decentralized edges to maximize value delivery, strengthen security and reduce latency. However, most companies have only recently started pursuing this opportunity and are therefore at the early stage of the cloud-to-edge transition. To provide an overview of AI deployment in the context of edge/cloud/hybrid architectures, we conduct a systematic literature review and a grey literature review. To advance understanding of how to integrate, deploy, operationalize and evolve AI models, we derive a framework from existing literature to accelerate the end-to-end deployment process. The framework is organized into five phases: Design, Integration, Deployment, Operation and Evolution. We make an attempt to analyze the extracted results by comparing and contrasting them to derive insights. The contribution of the paper is threefold. First, we conduct a systematic literature review in which we review the contemporary scientific literature and provide a detailed overview of the state-of-the-art of AI deployment. Second, we review the grey literature and present the state-of-practice and experience of practitioners while deploying AI models. Third, we present a framework derived from existing literature for the end-to-end deployment process and attempt to compare and contrast SLR and GLR results.

Software models in the Unified Modeling Language (UML) can been created or automatically reverse-engineered and used for quickly gaining structural insights into larger, legacy, or unfamiliar software. But as the size, structural complexity, and interdependencies between software components in larger systems grows, two-dimensional viewing and modeling has limitations, and new ways of visualizing larger models and numerous associated diagrams of different types are needed to intuitively convey structural and relational insights. To investigate the feasibility of using Virtual Reality (VR) to create an immersive UML-based software modeling experience, this paper contributes a VR solution concept for visualizing, navigating, modeling, and interacting with software models using UML notation. An implementation shows its feasibility while an empirical evaluation highlights its potential.

Stakeholders can have different views on the opening of data, and conflicts may arise between them. Several causes of disputes may arise during the decision-making process due to the diverse objectives, interests, and needs among the stakeholders that perceive their desires. Yet, no stakeholder taxonomy exists to guide this decision-making process. Direct and indirect stakeholders include open data providers, software developers, data scientists, privacy experts, decision-makers, users, open data evangelists, software developers, policy-makers and politicians. Using an iterative process, a stakeholders taxonomywas developed by classifying stakeholders based on their varying levels and views on openness. The taxonomy includes unaware, unknowledgeable, resistant, risk-averse, neutral, supportive, expert, champion, and leading roles. Each stakeholder proposes a unique mix of expertise, legitimacy, sense of urgency, perceived possible benefits, and risks. The stakeholder's taxonomy can help to improve the adoption of the decision-making process to open data.

Many countries seemed to a large extent to have been unprepared for the COVID-19 pandemic and national governments often acted uncoordinated resulting in many inconsistencies in the mitigation processes. The acknowledgement of the multiple factors at stake in handling the crisis has more often than not been omitted from public communication, where public officials' statements mostly framed the problem unilaterally, basing their narratives on warnings coming from the medical and public health scientific community. In this article, we propose a model for policymaking regarding hazardous events, such as a pandemic, to, in advance, forming better response strategies for future similar scenarios. We describe how an epidemic model can be integrated into a multi-stakeholder multi-criteria framework and how a more integrated analysis can be done, even under significant uncertainties.

In our earlier work we sketched an approach to developing software systems. The goal of this paper is to further illustrate the applicability and use of that approach. Via the practical example of the development of a control system, we illustrate the applicability of our approach to another type of system (other than the usual information system) and the manoeuvrability ('agility') of our textual System Sequence Descriptions. We discuss how to deal with situations where requirements are changing all the time ('agility' during requirements analyses). We also want to sketch the mental process of going from a simple, naive software solution towards various more subtle ones, probably inspired/guided by brainstorms with customers. In this case, it even ends up in a generic system (so, not for one particular user organization only).

We observe that context-aware systems currently developed in one domain or another are mostly technology-driven, and not so much user-centric. They are often not based on a thorough analysis of the effects they produce when interactingwith their context, especially regarding the contribution of these effects to user needs. We argue that a conceptual framework is needed to support such analyses. In this paper we identify the concepts necessary to define important structural aspects of a context-aware system and its context, and to formulate generalizations about effects of the interaction of the context-aware system and its context related to user needs. Using this conceptual framework, we classify context-aware systems in terms of the kinds of context assumptions that we canmake at design time, and we discuss several threats to validity of a context-aware system. We believe that the proposed conceptual framework can help to better assess the utility concerning a context-aware system design. We use various examples of context-aware applications to illustrate our ideas.

Evaluations of individuals;such as workers, researchers, team-sports athletes, etc.;are often based on the performance of their coalitions. The present paper will study the so-called ordinal social ranking problem;i.e., to determine the ordinal ranking of individuals according to the ordinal rankings of their coalitions. To be more specific, we study the problem with restricted domain of coalitions. It has earlier been proven that dominance (DOM) (if an alternative wins another alternative in every ceteris paribus comparison, social ranking must judge them in that way) and independence of irrelevant coalitions (IIC) will generate a dictatorship of coalition sizes. We will first prove that a similar dictatorship is generated as a result of weak DOM and IIC, under any domain of coalitions, as long as any two individuals can be compared ceterris paribus. Finally, we will study an extended problem for the ranking of the whole coalitions, e.g., determining the best coalitions for some award, and will prove that such a dictator must also be generated within this extended framework.

Software ecosystems have become a novel architectural approach to extend software development to the outside of companies, where third-party providers develop applications on top of a common platform. While designing software ecosystems, platform providers face an overwhelming design space of business and technical architectural decisions. Usually, enterprise architecture modeling languages such as ArchiMate are used to design the ecosystem around the platforms. Despite a body of work studying architecture of software ecosystems, there is still a lack of a reference architecture that captures both business and technical aspects, which can be followed by platform providers to design these systems. In this paper, we develop a reference architecture by using different sources of information such as existing ecosystems and the literature. After identifying the shortcomings of the ArchiMate language to design software ecosystems, we extend the language using the reference architecture to enable direct and enhanced modeling of ecosystem-specific concepts. The extended ArchiMate has been implemented in a tool that we use to design a real-world ecosystem called F-Droid. Our results show the reference architecture captures the F-Droid ecosystem architecture. Bad architectural smells are detected, and improvement suggestions are made. Our work will assist platform providers to improve architectural decision-making by making informed design decisions.

Efficient resource management is a critical success factor for all businesses. Correct insights into actual resource profiles, i.e. groups of resources performing similar activity instances, is important for successful knowledge and (human) resource management. To this end, organisational mining, a subfield of Process Mining, focuses on techniques to extract such resource profiles from event logs. However, existing techniques ignore contextual factors that impact how and by whom an activity is performed. This paper introduces the novel method ResProMin to discover context-aware resource profiles from event logs. In contrast to the state-of-the-art, this method builds upon the notion of activity instance archetypes, which incorporates the activity instance's context. An evaluation of the method on real-life event logs demonstrates its feasibility and potential to uncover valuable business insights.
