business process management has focused on discrete processes so far, i.e., processes with identifiable distinct outcomes (e.g., in manufacturing). By contrast, processes known from process and control engineering, e.g., chemical synthesis, have not been fully considered yet. Such processes can be discrete or continuous, i.e., require real-time control systems with constant inlet and outlet flows as well as temporally stable conditions. This paper models continuous processes with existing and standardized means, i.e., BPMN, and provides an exact definition of the parameters and loop conditions. The capabilities of BPMN for modeling continuous processes are analyzed and necessary extensions are provided. The concepts are applied to several real-world use cases from process and control engineering.

Agility as a capability to rapidly respond to changes and to reduce uncertainty in an increment-based way is also critically important in Educational Organizations, such as Colleges, Universities, online learning platforms, and educational service providers. Nowadays, people can easily get access to educational courses, and the ability to provide a personalized educational track and change it depending on an agile business context is critically important. The user needs to identify the target specialization or job and get the shortest path with the list of recommended courses and alternatives. This paper summarizes the key ideas relating to methodological principles and practical tools of agility that can be applicable to educational organizations and suggests the model that builds a unique educational path, based on users behavior, data on existing courses, and personal information. The suggested model uses gamification techniques to boost short-term motivation and allows customizing and rebuilding the educational track, also considering churn rate and the educational progress of the user.

Every modern organization nowadays produces data and consumes information through Decision-Support Systems (DSS) which produce more and more Complex Performance Indicators (CPI). This allows business monitoring, decision-making support and tracking of decisions effects. With the increasing complexity, DSS suffer from two main limitations that inhibit their use. First, DSS tend to be opaque to business Managers who cannot observe how the data is treated to produce indicators. Second, DSS are owned by the technicians, resulting in an IT-bottleneck and a business-exclusion. From a business Management perspective, the consequences are damaging. DSS result in sunk costs of development, fail to receive full confidence from business Managers and to fit dynamic business environments. In this research, preliminary insights are proposed to build a solution that tackles the previous limitations. The literature review, the research contributions and methodology are presented to conclude with the work plan of the PhD.

Due to the rise of IoT, event data becomes increasingly fine-grained. Faced with such data, process discovery often produces incomprehensible spaghetti-models expressed at a granularity level that doesn't match the mental model of a business user. One approach is to use event abstraction patterns to transform the event log towards a more coarse-grained level and to discover process models from this transformed log. Recent literature has produced various (partial) implementations of this approach, but insights how these techniques compare against each other is still limited. This paper focuses on the use of Local Process Models and Combination based Behavioural Pattern Mining to discover event abstraction patterns in combination with the approach of Mannhardt et al. [15] to transform the event log. Experiments are conducted to gain insights into the performance of these techniques. Results are very limited with a general decrease in fitness and precision and only a minimal improvement of complexity. Results also show that the combination of the process discovery algorithm and the event abstraction pattern miner matters. In particular, the combination of Local Process Models with Split Miner seems to improve precision.

With the increasing availability of software usage and the influence of the Lean Startup mindset, more and more companies choose to innovate through internal software startups. Such startups aim at developing new business models while at the same time relying on the resources from the companies where they emerged. The evidence from both researchers and practitioners indicates that driving internal software startups is challenging. This paper seeks to address this problem by asking the research question: how to make internal software startups work? We examined a unique case of a venture builder - a company primarily focusing on building internal software startups and launching them as independent companies. Applying a Grounded Theory approach, we analyzed data on four internal software startups at the case company. The results suggest that four strategies drive the examined startups: cultural, financial, personnel, and venture arrangement. We interpret our results by drawing on earlier literature on intrapreneurship and internal ventures and suggest four recommendations to succeed with internal software startups: 1) establish shared arenas for the employees;2) provide necessary resources for experimentation in the initial phase and increase them incrementally;3) build up in-house product management competence through coaching, and 4) harness employees' own motivation to develop their own ideas.

Most of multicriteria methods require the specification of different preference parameters. This necessitates a considerable cognitive effort from the decision maker, especially for those with no or limited knowledge about multicriteria analysis. The situation is further complicated within a group of decision makers. In this paper, we propose a multicriteria classification approach that relies on an aggregation/disaggregation strategy within a group of decision makers, permitting thus to considerably reduce the needed cognitive effort at individual as well as group levels. The aggregation/disaggregation strategy is known for its ability to reduce the cognitive effort at the level of individual decision makers. At group level, a simple majority rule is used to generate consensual decisions with no additional information from the decision makers. A didactic example is used to illustrate the proposed approach.

Agile software development is the most popular methodology used in today's software engineering. Agility in software development does not mean the resignation to the accuracy and quality of meeting user requirements. However, it is apparent that the tasks of requirements engineering are taken lightly or often overlooked in agile projects due to project cost. One of the main reasons for this is the lack of efficient and easy to use modelling tools which can be used for the purposes of business modelling and initial software design. Therefore, there is a need for good modelling tools which can be easily used by both non-technical users and software developers which can fill the gap between business needs and identified software requirements. This paper presents BORM as a feasible solution for this in an agile software development environment.

The development of effective business models is an essential task in highly competitive markets like mobile ecosystems. Existing development methods for these business models do not specifically bring into focus that the development process profoundly depends on the situation (e.g., market size, regulations) of the mobile app developer. Here, a mismatch between method and situation can lead to poor resource management and longer development cycles. In software engineering, software projects use situational method engineering to configure a development method out of a method repository based on the project situation. Analogously, we support creating situation-specific business model development methods with a method base and new user roles. Here, the method engineer obtains the domain expert's knowledge and stores it in the method base as elements, building blocks, and patterns. We derive the expert knowledge from a grey literature review on mobile development processes. After this, the method engineer constructs the development method based on the described situation of the business developer. We provide an open-source tool and evaluate it by constructing a local event platform's business model development method.

Diverse cultural heritage, occurring on a local or regional scale, has become an extremely valuable base for creating new interesting tourist products. One example is the post-industrial heritage related to the areas of two former hard coal mines in the Czeladz Commune in the Silesian Voivodeship. The processes related to designing, planning and final decisions regarding selecting the best solution for the promotion of post-industrial heritage are, in this problem, non-trivial, as they have a complex structure and multiple criteria character. This paper presents specific characteristics of the decision problem under consideration resulting in several alternative options for a planned cultural tourism product (CTP) regarding post-industrial heritage in Czeladz. The analysis of its features, attributes, criteria and alternatives is provided to formulate a multiple criteria decision making (MCDM) problem. It is based on the 12-step analytic framework that implements the FITradeoff method for preference modelling. This method is operated by means of an interactive Decision Support System (DSS) with several flexibility features;moreover, the elicitation process is carried out based on partial information provided, which lead to time and effort saving.

This paper describes a new temporal graph modelling solution to organize and memorize changes in a business application. To do so, we enrich the basic graph by adding the concepts of states and instances. Our model has first the advantage of representing a complete temporal evolution of the graph, at the level of: (i) the graph structure, (ii) the attribute set of entities/relationships and (iii) the attributes' value of entities/relationships. Then, it has the advantage of memorizing in an optimal manner evolution traces of the graph and retrieving easily temporal information about a graph component. To validate the feasibility of our proposal, we implement our proposal in Neo4j, a data store based on property graph model. We then compare its performance in terms of storage and querying time to the classical modelling approach of temporal graph. Our results show that our model outperforms the classical approach by reducing disk usage by 12 times and saving up to 99% queries' runtime.
