Detecting events from social media data is an important problem. In this paper, we propose a novel method to detect events by detecting traces of herding in the Twitter data. We analyze only the metadata for this and not the content of the tweets. We evaluate our method on a dataset of 3.3 million tweets that was collected by us. We then compared the results obtained from our method with a state of the art method called Twitinfo on the above mentioned 3.3 million dataset. Our method showed better results. To check the generality of our method, we tested it on a publicly available dataset of 1.28 million tweets and the results convey that our method can be generalised.

There exist a variety of methods for extracting weights and values in multi-criteria decisions based on different rankings. However, it is difficult to determine which the useful ones are and how they correspond to the decision makers' perceptions, if at all. How do we know that what we are using is really significant, especially in situations when the decision bases are vague? One category of methods that has proved relatively successful is to use so-called generated surrogate weights that are, in some sense, meant to represent rankings and there are various suggestions as to how best to distil them from input information. In this paper, using a number of simulations, we review some leading algorithms for automatic weight generation without external parameters besides cardinal and ordinal rankings and provide some guidelines for selecting a surrogate weight-generating function for MCDM applications, in ordinal as well as cardinal information settings. We also propose an alternative with some attractive properties compared with the existing ones.

A temporal disease trajectory describes the sequence of diseases that a patient has experienced over time. Electronic health records (EHRs) that contain coded disease diagnoses can be mined to find common and unusual disease trajectories that have the potential to generate clinically valuable insights into the relationship between diseases. Disease trajectories are typically identified by a sequence of timestamped diagnostic codes very similar to the event logs of timestamped activities used in process mining, and we believe disease trajectory models can be produced using process mining tools and techniques. We explored this through a case study using sequences of timestamped diagnostic codes from the publicly available MIMIC-III database of de-identified EHR data. In this paper, we present an approach that recognised the unique nature of disease trajectory models based on sequenced pairs of diagnostic codes tested for directionality. To promote reuse, we developed a set of event log transformations that mine disease trajectories from an EHR using standard process mining tools. Our method was able to produce effective and clinically relevant disease trajectory models fromMIMIC-III, and the method demonstrates the feasibility of applying process mining to disease trajectory modelling.

Reducing the number of suppliers - a process known as supply base optimization - is crucial for organizations to achieve better quality, higher service levels, and lower prices. The buyers in the role of the business analyst in corporate purchasing departments are responsible for this process and usually consider various selection criteria. Their decisions rely on accessing and analyzing large amounts of data from different source systems, but typically, they lack the necessary technological and analytical knowledge, as well as adequate tools, to do this effectively. In this paper, we present the design and evaluation of a self-service analytics (SSA) system that helps business analysts manage the maintenance, repair, and operations (MRO) supply base. The system recommends shifting purchasing volume between suppliers based on a machine learning (ML) algorithm. The results demonstrate the potential of SSA systems in facilitating ML model consumption by business analysts to perform supply base optimization more effectively.

The process of implementing agile technologies in an enterprise is an example of a highly demanding and challenging topic both for practitioners and academy. Speaking about agility, we basically mean various kinds of automation. A higher degree of automation results in a more agile enterprise. However, in practice, even in the case of complete automation of the enterprise, there remains a need for user interaction with various software systems. To increase the efficiency and simplify such interactions, it is necessary to develop mechanisms, which enable adaptation of user domain-specific interfaces for actual conditions of human-machine interaction. We consider for this purpose the use of an invariant formalism based on the allocation of stable, unchanging object data structures and interface structures. Evaluation of the effectiveness of the approach proposed is carried out with the example of the analytical system of the university admissions committee.

WebGIS applications have become popular due to technological advances in location and sensor technology, with diverse examples with different objectives becoming available. However, there is a lack of requirements elicitation approaches for WebGIS applications, restricting the communication between stakeholders, compromising the systematization of development, and the overall quality of the resulting systems. In this paper, we present the WebGIS Interface Requirements Modeling Language (WebGIS IRML), developed to support communication between stakeholders and developers, addressing user interface requirements during the development process of a WebGIS application. WebGIS IRML is supported by a requirements model editor, which was developed using Model-Driven Development (MDD) techniques. We also describe an experiment which was performed to evaluate the language, involving 30 participants (mostly IT Engineers), to measure the ease of understanding of the language models resulting from the use of the language in the editor and capture the feedback of participants about it. Generally, the results were quite positive, encouraging the use of the language for WebGIS development.

The way patients are treated in Hospital Emergency Departments changes during the year, depending on many factors. One key component is weather temperature. Some seasonal maladies are tightly related to temperature, such as flu in cold weather or sunburn in hot weather. In this study, data from a hospital in Valencia was used to explore how harsh weather changes affect the emergency department, obtaining information about probable impacts of global warming effects in healthcare systems. Process mining techniques helped in the discovery of changes in the Emergency Departments. Some illnesses, such as heat stroke, are more prevalent during heatwaves, but more interestingly, the time to attend patients is also higher. Rapid changes in temperature are also analyzed through Process Mining techniques.

Process mining techniques including process discovery, conformance checking, and process enhancement provide extensive knowledge about processes. Discovering running processes and deviations as well as detecting performance problems and bottlenecks are well-supported by process mining tools. However, all the provided techniques represent the past/current state of the process. The improvement in a process requires insights into the future states of the process w.r.t. the possible actions/changes. In this paper, we present a new tool that enables process owners to extract all the process aspects from their historical event data automatically, change these aspects, and re-run the process automatically using an interface. The combination of process mining and simulation techniques provides new evidence-driven ways to explore "what-if" questions. Therefore, assessing the effects of changes in process improvement is also possible. Our Python-based web-application provides a complete interactive platform to improve the flow of activities, i.e., process tree, along with possible changes in all the derived activity, resource, and process parameters. These parameters are derived directly from an event log without user-background knowledge.

The software ecosystem is a trust-rich part of the world. Collaboratively, software engineers trust major hubs in the ecosystem, such as package managers, repository services, and programming language ecosystems. However, trust entails the assumption of risks. In this paper, we lay out the risks we are taking by blindly trusting these hubs when using information systems. Secondly, we present a vision for a trust-recording mechanism in the software ecosystem that mitigates the presented risks. This vision is realized in TrustSECO: a distributed infrastructure that collects, stores, and discloses trust facts about information systems. If our community manages to implement this mechanism, we can create an urgently needed healthy and secure software ecosystem. Finally, we report on the current status of the project.
