In spite of the current relevance of the topic, there is no universally recognized knowledge base about SARS-CoV-2 variants;viral sequences deposited at recognized repositories are still very few, and the process of tracking new variants is not coordinated. CoV2K is a manually curated knowledge base providing an organized collection of information about SARS-CoV-2 variants, extracted from the scientific literature;it features a taxonomy of variant impacts, organized according to three main categories (protein stability, epidemiology, and immunology) and including levels for these effects (higher, lower, null) resulting from a coherent interpretation of research articles. CoV2K is integrated with ViruSurf, hosted at Politecnico di Milano;ViruSurf is globally the largest database of curated viral sequences and variants, integrated from deposition repositories such as COG-UK, GenBank, and GISAID. Thanks to such integration, variants documented in CoV2K can be analyzed and searched over large volumes of nucleotide and amino acid sequences, e.g., for co-occurrence and impact agreement;the paper sketches some of the data analysis tests that are currently under development.

Software start-ups develop innovative software products working with disruptive technologies in time pressure and market-driven environment. Recently, User eXperience (UX) has become a hot topic that interests software teams of start-ups. However, software and UX professionals have struggled to match UX practices into the development activities, partially because of the lack of resources in the start-ups. This paper investigates how software start-ups handle UX activities during software development and how relevant UX is to these companies' professionals. To achieve our aim, we surveyed 88 professionals who take part in software teams in star-ups, analyzing the responses using descriptive and statistical methods. Our results reveal that regardless of having or not a UX position in the start-up, UX practices are spread in different software development phases and not fitting into them. Results also show although professionals consider UX relevant and recognize important skills to perform UX activities, some obstacles hinder the effective use of UX in software start-ups. From the survey results, we identified a set of challenges to be overcome in consolidating the UX work in software start-ups. By diagnosing the UX state-of-practice in start-up scenarios and identifying such challenges, our work contributes to provides relevant insights to further academic and practical studies in this field.

Online controlled experimentation is an established technique to assess ideas for software features. Current approaches to conduct experimentation are based on experimentation platforms. However, each experimentation platform has its own explicit properties and implicit assumptions about an experiment. As a result, experiments are incomplete, difficult to repeat, and not comparable across experimentation platforms or platform versions. Our approach separates the experiment definition from the experimentation platform. This makes the experimentation infrastructure-less dependent on the experimentation platform. Requirements on the independent experiment definition are researched and an architecture to implement the approach is proposed. A proof-of-concept demonstrates the feasibility and achieved level of independence from the platform.

Taxonomies play a central role in conceptual domain modeling having a direct impact in areas such as knowledge representation, ontology engineering, software engineering, as well as in knowledge organization in information sciences. Despite their key role, there is in the literature little guidance on how to build high-quality taxonomies, with notable exceptions such as the OntoClean methodology, and the ontology-driven conceptual modeling language OntoUML. These techniques take into account the ontological meta-properties of types to establish well-founded rules for forming taxonomic structures. In this paper, we show how to leverage on the formal rules underlying these techniques to build taxonomies which are correct by construction. We define a set of correctness-preserving operations to systematically introduce types and subtyping relations into taxonomic structures. To validate our proposal, we formalize these operations as a graph grammar. Moreover, to demonstrate our claim of correctness by construction, we use automatic verification techniques over the grammar language to show that: (i) all taxonomies produced by the grammar rules are correct;and (ii) the rules can generate all correct taxonomies.

Entrepreneurial hackathons are generally perceived to foster the creation of new startups, support networking, and acquire entrepreneurial skills. Current research work about entrepreneurial hackathons focuses on reporting the perceived benefits of the participants. However, little is known about why startup founders initially participate in hackathons, how they perceive the impact of participating on their entrepreneurial journey, and how different hackathon settings can affect their perception. To address this gap, we conducted an interview study with startup founders who have participated in hackathons. Our findings indicate that founders are mainly motivated to participate in hackathons in relation to their startups to learn about the topic of their startup and train the prototyping skills of their startup team. Moreover, we found that the initial intentions of startup founders could change during the hackathon.

A typical Web service composition approach contains four phases: (1) construction of the compositions, (2) generation of executable plans, (3) classification of executable plans, and (4) selection and deployment of the best executable plan. This paper adopts and extends a graph based composition approach by using a more reliable classification method, namely Dominance-based Rough Set Approach (DRSA). This method is very suitable to take into account the Quality of Service (QoS) aspects in Web service composition. The paper also illustrates the application of the DRSA on a set of composite Web services and evaluates its performance.

The health of an ecosystem is by definition the most basic requirement for its survival. This paper aims to examine the driving forces behind the health of software ecosystems, in a comparative manner between four different ecosystems which have experienced a major downfall. We examine these ecosystems for similarities, from which demise principles are derived. Consequently, countermeasures are proposed in an attempt to combat these demise principles. The findings show that the main demise principles are Underestimation of competitors, Lack of innovation, and Incorrect management of the ecosystem. The proposed countermeasures to address these demise principles are to Increase market awareness to increase competitive advantage, Increase product quality, Increase platform quality, Adjust value propositions and Formulate a partner-oriented strategy.

The increasing availability of data from online social networks attracts researchers' interest, who seek to build algorithms and machine learning models to analyze users' interactions and behaviors. Different methods have been developed to detect remarkable precursors preceding events, using text mining and Machine Learning techniques on documents, or using network topology with graph patterns. Our approach aims at analyzing social networks data, through a graphlets enumeration algorithm, to identify event precursors and to study their contribution to the event. We test the proposed method on two different types of social network data sets: real-world events (Lubrizol fire, EU law discussion), and general events (Facebook and MathOverflow). We also contextualize the results by studying the position (orbit) of important nodes in the graphlets, which are assumed as event precursors. After analysis of the results, we show that some graphlets can be considered precursors of events.

Conceptual modeling plays a fundamental role to capture information about complex business domains (e.g., finance, healthcare) and enables semantic interoperability. To fulfill their role, conceptual models must contain the exact set of constraints that represent the worldview of the relevant domain stakeholders. However, as empirical results show, modelers are subject to cognitive limitations and biases and, hence, in practice, they produce models that fall short in that respect. Moreover, the process of formally designing conceptual models is notoriously hard and requires expertise that modelers do not always have. This paper falls in the general area concerned with the development of artificial intelligence techniques for the enterprise. In particular, we propose an approach that leverages model finding and inductive logic programming (ILP) techniques. We aim to move towards supporting modelers in identifying domain constraints that are missing from their models, and thus improving their precision w.r.t. their intended worldviews. Firstly, we describe how to use the results produced by the application of model finding as input to an inductive learning process. Secondly, we test the approach with the goal of demonstrating its feasibility and illustrating some key design issues to be considered while using these techniques.

Current process management systems (PMS) use graphical modelling languages such as BPMN for modelling the control flow. Almost no program code has to be written by business process designers for defining the possible order of activities. For another important aspect of business processes - assigning actors to activities - no such simple and standardized way of modelling exists. This causes problems at business process implementation projects in practice. We explain such aspects and shortcomings of current commercial PMS that lead to these problems. For each aspect, it is analysed whether appropriate scientific solutions exist, or whether it is an unsolved research question.
