Product line management activities have to ensure that offered product options are valid and compatible. With the arise of the Internet of Things (IoT) movement not only the own product compatibility has to be managed by the vendors anymore, but also the compliance and openness to standardized interfaces has to be supported as well. The Machine to Machine (M2M) communication protocol standard Open Platform Communications Unified Architecture (OPC UA) has received great attention in the field of mechanical engineering recently. In this industrial experience report we describe our approach how to support the testing of automatically generated models for OPC UA, by applying test case generation at the integration level. We show the feasibility of our approach and report about found issues, discuss some general findings and provide an outlook for future work.

Intention Mining has the purpose to manipulate of large volumes of data, integrate information from different sources and formats and extract useful insights as facts from this data in order to discover users' intentions. It is used in different fields: Robotics, Network forensics, Security, Bioinformatics, Learning, Map Visualization, Game, etc. There is actually a large variety of intention mining techniques applied to different domains as information retrieval, security, robotics, etc. However, no systematic review had been conducted on this recent research domain. There is a need to understand what is Intention Mining, what is its purpose, what are the existing techniques and tools to mine intentions. In this paper, we propose a comparison framework to structure and to describe the domain degrees of Intention Mining for a further complete systematic literature review of this field. We validate our comparison framework by applying it to five relevant approaches in the domain.

Hackathons are events in which diverse teams work together to explore and develop solutions, software, or even ideas. Hackathons have been recognized not only as public events for hacking but also as a corporate mechanism for innovation. Hackathons are a way for established large-scale agile organizations to achieve increased employee wellbeing as well as being a curator for innovation and developing new products. The sudden transition to the work-from-home mode caused by the COVID-19 pandemic first put many corporate events requiring collocation, such as hackathons, temporarily on hold and then motivated companies to find ways to hold these events virtually. In this paper, we report our findings from investigating hackathons in the context of a large agile company by first exploring the general benefits and challenges of hackathons and then trying to understand how they were affected by the virtual setup. We conducted nine interviews, surveyed 23 employees, and analyzed a hackathon demo. We found that hackathons provide both individual and organizational benefits of innovation, personal interests, and acquiring new skills and competencies. However, several challenges such as added stress due to stopping the regular work, employees fearing not having enough contribution to deliver, and potential mismatch between individual and organizational goals were also found. With respect to the virtual setup, we found that virtual hackathons are not diminishing the innovation benefits. However, some negative effects surfaced on the social and networking side.

The Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) is a framework for scaling agile methods in large organizations. We have found several experience reports and white papers describing SAFe adoptions in different banks, which indicates that SAFe is being used in the banking industry. However, there is a lack of academic publications on the topic, the banking industry is missing in the scientific reports analyzing SAFe transformations. To fill this gap, we present a study on the main challenges with a SAFe transformation at a large full-service bank. We identify the challenges in the bank under study and compare the findings with experience reports from other banks, as well as with research on SAFe transformations in other domains. Many of the challenges reported in this paper overlap with the generic SAFe challenges, including management and organization, education and training, culture and mindset, requirements engineering, quality assurance, and systems architecture. However, we also report some novel challenges specific to the banking domain, e.g., the risk of jeopardizing customer relations, stability, and trust of external stakeholders. This study validates several SAFe-related challenges reported in previous work in the banking context. It also brings up some novel challenges specific to the banking industry. Therefore, we believe our results are particularly useful to practitioners responsible for SAFe transformations at other banks.

Context: Agile practices as well as UX methods are nowadays wellknown and often adopted to develop complex software and products more efficiently and effectively. However, in the so called VUCA environment, which many companies are confronted with, the sole use of UX research is not sufficient to find the best solutions for customers. The implementation of Design Thinking can support this process. But many companies and their product owners don't know how much resources they should spend for conducting Design Thinking Objective: This paper aims at suggesting a supportive tool, the "Discovery Effort Worthiness (DEW) Index", for product owners and agile teams to determine a suitable amount of effort that should be spent for Design Thinking activities. Method: A case study was conducted for the development of the DEW index. Design Thinking was introduced into the regular development cycle of an industry Scrum team. With the support of UX and Design Thinking experts, a formula was developed to determine the appropriate effort for Design Thinking Results: The developed "Discovery Effort Worthiness Index" provides an easy-to-use tool for companies and their product owners to determine how much effort they should spend on Design Thinking methods to discover and validate requirements. A company can map the corresponding Design Thinking methods to the results of the DEW Index calculation, and product owners can select the appropriate measures from this mapping. Therefore, they can optimize the effort spent for discovery and validation.

Process Performance Indicators (PPIs) are quantifiable metrics to evaluate the business process performance providing essential information for decision-making as regards to efficiency and effectiveness. Nowadays, customizable process models and PPIs are usually modeled separately, especially when dealing with PPIs variability. Likewise, modeling PPI variants with no explicit link with the related customizable process generates redundant models, making adjustment and maintenance difficult. The use of appropriate methods and tools is needed to enable the integration and support of PPIs variability in customizable process models. In this paper, we propose a method based on the Process Performance Indicator Calculation Tree (PPICT), which allows to model the PPIs variability linked to customizable processes modeled on the business Process Feature Model (BPFM) approach. The Process Performance Indicator Calculation (PPIC) method supports PPIs variability modeling through five design stages, which concerns the PPICT design, the integration of PPICT-BMFM and the configuration of required PPIs aligned with process activities. The PPIC method is supported by a metamodel and a graphical notation. This method has been implemented in a prototype using the ADOxx platform. A partial user-centered evaluation of the PPICT use was carried out in a real utility distribution case to model PPIs variability linked to a customizable process model.

Robotic process automation is a technology to imitate human behavior when interacting with computers to perform digitized tasks manually, such as opening and closing applications, reading documents, entering data, and sending e-mails. As with any new technology, estimating the costs and breakeven of robotic process automation projects is challenging. Currently, in practice, there are no dedicated guidelines for defining cost components in those projects that go beyond simple comparison with person-hours and salary cost. To address this gap, we review literature on the cost of robotic process automation projects to collect and structure those cost drivers that can be generalized. We categorize and prioritize them and derive a novel cost framework specifically for the cost estimation of robotic process automation projects. The framework comprises three cost calculation perspectives for three distinct project scopes hosting eleven cost drivers in the three categories development, investment, and operation. We illustrate the framework in a robotic process automation use case to demonstrate its usefulness.

Federated Learning, as a distributed learning technique, has emerged with the improvement of the performance of IoT and edge devices. The emergence of this learning method alters the situation in which data must be centrally uploaded to the cloud for processing and maximizes the utilization of edge devices' computing and storage capabilities. The learning approach eliminates the need to upload large amounts of local data and reduces data transfer latency with local data processing. Since the Federated Learning technique does not require centralized data for model training, it is better suited to edge learning scenarios in which nodes have limited data. However, despite the fact that Federated Learning has significant benefits, we discovered that companies struggle with integrating Federated Learning components into their systems. In this paper, we present case study research that describes reasons why companies anticipate Federated Learning as an applicable technique. Secondly, we summarize the services that a complete Federated Learning system needs to support in industrial scenarios and then identify the key challenges for industries to adopt and transition to Federated Learning. Finally, based on our empirical findings, we suggest five criteria for companies implementing reliable Federated Learning systems.

business Process models are conceptual representations of work practices. However, a process is more than its model: key information about the rationale of the process is hidden in accompanying documents. We present a framework for business process discovery from process descriptions in texts. We use declarative process models as our target modelling technique. The manual discovery of declarative process models from texts is particularly hard as users have difficulties identifying textual fragments denoting business rules. Our framework combines machine-learning and expert system techniques in order to provide an algorithmic solution to discovery. The combination of the two techniques allows 1) the identification of process components in texts, 2) the enrichment of predictions with semantic information, and 3) the generation of consolidated hybrid models that link text fragments and process elements. Our initial evaluation reports state-of-the-art performance in accuracy against user annotated models, and it has been implemented and adopted by our industrial partner.

Identifying structures in data is an essential step to enhance insights and understand applications. Clusters and anomalies are the basic building blocks for those structures and occur in various types. Clusters vary in shape and density, while anomalies occur as single-point outliers, contextual or collective anomalies. In online applications, clusters even have a higher complexity. Besides static clusters, which represent a persistent structure throughout the whole data stream, many clusters are dynamic, tend to drift and are only observable in certain time frames. Here, we propose OTOSO, a monitoring tool based on OPTICS. OTOSO is an anytime structure visualizer, that plots representations for density-based trace clusters in process event streams. It identifies temporal deviation clusters and visualizes them as a time-dependent graph. Each node represents a cluster of traces by size and density. Edges yield information about merging and splitting trace clusters. The aim is to provide an on-demand overview over the temporal deviation structure during the process execution. Not only for online applications, but also for static datasets, our approach yields insights about temporally limited occurrences of trace clusters, which are difficult to detect using a global clustering approach.
