Various authors have defined an extensive set of measures regarding the complexity of process design, which can be objectively measured by using structural complexity metrics. Nevertheless, the research in this area indicates that the percentage of empirically and theoretically validated metrics is relatively small. This suggests that there are still no real examples of the metrics usage within organizations. Despite that we could just validate existing proposals, we feel that a new and enhanced approach to evaluate process diagram complexity is feasible and needed. Thus, in the present paper, we will discuss a possibility of developing a new component-based approach for evaluating process diagram complexity, for which we anticipate that it would be more precise than existing ones, since it will also assess such constituent parts of process diagrams which not only contribute to higher complexity (e.g. complex routing behavior), but also to lower complexity (e.g. decomposition). Moreover, we plan to thoroughly validate our approach both in theory and practice.

One of the main challenges in applying process mining on real event data, is the presence of noise and rare behaviour. Applying process mining algorithms directly on raw event data typically results in complex, incomprehensible, and, in some cases, even inaccurate analyses. As a result, correct and/or important behaviour may be concealed. In this paper, we propose an event data repair method, that tries to detect and repair outlier behaviour within the given event data. We propose a probabilistic method that is based on the occurrence frequency of activities in specific contexts. Our approach allows for removal of infrequent behaviour, which enables us to obtain a more global view of the process. The proposed method has been implemented in both the ProM- and the RapidProM framework. Using these implementations, we conduct a collection of experiments that show that we are able to detect and modify most types of outlier behaviour in the event data. Our evaluation clearly demonstrates that we are able to help to improve process mining discovery results by repairing event logs upfront.

Conventional wisdom holds that expert contributors provide higher quality user-generated content (UGC) than novices. Using the cognitive construct of selective attention, we argue that this may not be the case in some crowd-sourcing UGC applications. We argue that crowdsourcing systems that seek participation mainly from contributors who are experienced or have high levels of proficiency in the crowdsourcing task will gather less diverse and therefore less repurposable data. We discuss the importance of the information diversity dimension of information quality for the use and repurposing of UGC and provide a theoretical basis for our position, with the goal of stimulating empirical research.

Model-driven development approach to software engineering requires precise models defining as much of the system as possible. OntoUML is a conceptual modelling language based on UFO, which provides constructs to create ontologically well-founded and precise conceptual models. In the approach we utilize, OntoUML is used for making conceptual models of software application data. Such a model is then transformed into its proper realization in a relational database, preserving all the implicit constraints defined by various types of universals and relations in the original OntoUML model. In this paper, we discuss possible optimizations of the transformation of Kinds and Subkinds - rigid sortal universal types, a backbone of OntoUML models.

In this paper, we develop a framework to generally characterize the equilibrium trial and pricing strategies of oligopoly software market, when there exist competition, network effects (externalities), uncertainty on software functionality, network maintaining cost and compatibility issues. We find that, in equilibrium, the restriction on network effects is decreasing with network effects, but increasing with consumers' basic willingness to pay. Meanwhile, the restriction on functionality is increasing with the posterior on the functionality after trial. The equilibrium price has a non-linear relation with the equilibrium network effects in a monopoly market and a market with completely incompatible software. However, the equilibrium price is set to maintaining cost in a market with completely compatible software. Moreover, we find that incompatibility could generate an equilibrium under which identical firms choose different trial and pricing strategies, and all consumers who want to purchase software are divided by firms on the market.

business process variants are common in many enterprises and properly managing them is indispensable. Some process management suites already offer features to tackle the challenges of creating and updating multiple variants of a process. As opposed to the widespread activity-centric process modeling paradigm, however, there is little to no support for process variants in other process support paradigms, such as the recently proposed artifact-centric or object-aware process support paradigm. This paper presents concepts for supporting process variants in the object-aware process management paradigm. We offer insights into the distributed object-aware process management framework PHILharmonicFlows as well as the concepts it provides for implementing variants and versioning support based on log propagation and log replay. Finally, we examine the challenges that arise from the support of process variants and show how we solved these, thereby enabling future research into related fundamental aspects to further raise the maturity level of data-centric process support paradigms.

Since online reviews have become an increasingly important information source for consumers to evaluate products during online shopping, many platforms started to adopt review mechanisms to maximize the value of such massive reviews. In recent years, the review tag function has been adopted in practices and leading the research of sentiment and opinion extraction techniques. However, the examination of its impact has been largely overlooked. In this paper, we specifically look into the effect of the tag function on the evaluation of highly-rated popular products and helpfulness perception of their reviews by proposing a framework through the lens of attribution theory. Experimental methods were utilized to test our hypotheses. Our findings demonstrate the importance of tag function application as it further increases consumers' product evaluation for popular products. We also found that different tag function appearances influence consumers' cognitive biases in review helpfulness perception.

Enterprise Architecture is the process of translating business vision into strategy. Hence, Enterprise Modeling is the process of translating an organization's strategic intent into mandated socio-technological innovation projects required to reach an agreed future state of the firm's operation. This paper uses four longitudinal case studies at DHL Express Europe to introduce a significant paradigm shift to modeling of the enterprise at the work system level as an abstract representation of the desired future state of the enterprise. This representation specifies in full the business capabilities serving current and future customer needs and the work system configuration enhancements needed to satisfy the customer needs. The associated project has four p steps: (1) Assessment of Status Quo, (2) Agreeing on the desired End-State, (3) Evolution of legacy work-systems, (4) Removal of Obsolete components. This process model explicitly includes the necessity to search for, address and remove all strategic, financial, operational and technical legacy issues identified during the baseline of the status quo. Enterprise Architects should be embedded in each implementation project for Project Assurance purposes in order to monitor the delivery of the agreed end-state.

While usually collaborative logistics assures all partners are better off in coalition, a partner may in turn be composed by different sub-units. What is the effect of implementing collaboration for each of these sub-units? We study this problem motivated by a real-world case arising in a network of sawmills in Sweden. These sawmills have a common purchase and logistic organisation. The purchasing cost of forest areas is divided evenly among the mills even though the real purchasing costs differ between sawmills. The organisation looks for an approach to also split the logistic cost in a fair and transparent way. Moreover, the sawmills collaborate with an external company in wood bartering. Even if the organization as a whole benefits from the collaboration, the collaborative solution may leave some of the sawmills worse off, as the volumes they would use in absence of collaboration goes to the external company. The impact depends on the geographical location of mills, and the organisation wants to know how the negative impact can be balanced by a new allocation of the logistic costs. By using an optimization model implemented in a decision support system, we compute the logistics costs perceived by the organization in presence and absence of collaboration. We study a number of approaches to allocate the logistic cost and analyze how these approaches can serve as a basis for the process.

Process mining aims at exploring the data produced by executable business processes to mine the underlying control-flow and data-flow. Most of the process mining algorithms assume the existence of an event log with a certain maturity level. Unfortunately, the logs provided by process unaware information systems often do not comply with the required maturity level, since they lack the notion of process instance, also referred in process mining as "case id". Without a proper identification of the case id attribute in log files, the outcome of process mining algorithms is unpredictable. This paper proposes a new approach that aims to overcome this challenge by automatically inferring the case id attribute from log files. The approach has been implemented as a ProM plugin and evaluated with several real-world event logs. The results demonstrate a high accuracy in inferring the case id attribute.
