Currently, industrial maintenance experiences a shift from traditional on-call business towards long-term maintenance contracts, as, for example, availability-based maintenance contracts. Recently, researchers presented Service Level Engineering (SLE) as an approach for customers to determine their cost-optimal long-term availability levels for their production equipment within one production system. However-in order to apply SLE-customers must know their costs of downtime, i.e. costs associated to the unavailability of production assets. This work presents a generic approach for customers to determine their costs of downtime function, a function reflecting the costs arising for a manufacturer due to unavailable production equipment. The approach uses simulation studies to incorporate different downtime patterns that result in the same overall availability. Consequently, this work contributes to the successful application of availability-based maintenance contract in practice. In detail, this work addresses the question of determining the industrial costs of downtime, a necessary prerequisite for the successful application of SLE in industrial maintenance.

In this paper, we present a theory of information biases generated by online physicians/doctors who work on healthcare platforms. We find that the private information that originates from the expertise of the physicians and their professional investigations on patients' reports/messages would induce a persistent bias on diagnostic reports. This information bias would further influence the demand of online healthcare services in two ways. First, the more skeptical the rational patients are towards the potentially biased diagnostic information, the less likely their decision would rely on the diagnostic reports generated by the physicians. Second, the information bias would make certain types of diagnosis (medical reports) come up more often than others. We also find that the private information gives online physicians more incentive to bias their reports if their return of career concern depends on the reputation of being providers of accurate diagnostic reports. For the healthcare platform, we find that the bias can be reduced by restricting the discretion allowed to physicians, but the platform's profit would be increased if more bias is allowed. We also present a variety of testable predictions related to the registration fee charged by healthcare platforms.

For the past three decades, enterprise modelling (EM) has been emerging as a significant yet complex paradigm to tackle holistic systematic enterprise analysis and design. With a high fluctuation in the global economy, industrial stability and technology shift, the necessity of such paradigms becomes crucial in determining the decisions that an enterprise can make for surviving in such a highly dynamic business ecosystem. EM practices have focused for a long time, on the design-time of enterprise systems. Recently, there has been a rapid development in data analytics, machine learning and intelligent systems from which an EM platform can benefit. EM needs to cope with the new changes in both business and technology;it should also help architects to determine optimum decisions and reduce complexity in technical infrastructure. In this paper, the author discusses several challenges facing enterprise modelling practices and offers an architectural notion for future development focusing on the requirements of a platform that can be called intelligent and adaptive.

Servitization has received significant attention from scholars and practitioners over the last decade. However, despite substantial research contributions in the fields of new service development and service innovation, product-focused small and medium-sized enterprises struggle to develop sophisticated service offerings. This paper attempts to better understand this discrepancy and suggests ways to overcome it. We have conducted a case study with a medium-sized manufacturing company that currently undertakes first steps in the development of advanced services. In terms of a theoretical contribution, our study indicates a limited understanding of the perceived value of services during the fuzzy front end of service innovation. Therefore, companies need to adopt new ways to understand their customers (i.e. increase customer intimacy). However, they often struggle to directly involve customers in the co-development of advanced services. In terms of a practical contribution, our research suggests that employee-centric service innovation-the idea of utilizing front line employees as proxies of customers-is a viable strategy to mitigate the identified challenges.

The purpose of this paper is the development of a customer-centered understanding of smart services by utilizing customer-dominant logic as a theoretical view. It extends current perspectives on smart services and proposes a definition highlighting the relevance of customer centricity and customer data management for service engineering. For this purpose, smart service dimensions will be deduced from current literature. These dimensions represent the foundation for a procedure model that will be developed and tested within a research initiative focusing on the restaurant industry. This procedure model is intended to support the discovery of new ideas based on data as well as the management of data requirements to successfully design smart services. The restaurant sector serves in this context as an innovative application field for smart service prototyping. The paper represents current research in progress, outlines the objective of the research initiative and demonstrates first empirical research results.

The current trend of individualization forces industrial service providers to search for new ways of standardizing their internal processes without diminishing the flexibility of satisfying customer demands. This conflict of interests reaches its peak in the quotation process, where suppliers are spending a considerable amount of time and effort, often preparing their quotes from the scratch. The purpose of this paper is to apply the concept of service modularity to improve the efficiency of the quotation process on both operational and strategic levels. Using methods of qualitative research, I analyze the corresponding challenges of 19 German service providers and identify possible areas of improvement with the help of the service modularity. The result of the paper are 15 requirements for the appropriate IT-support to cover these identified challenges and enable the realization of the concept in practice. I hereby contribute to the ongoing discussion on service modularity by delivering empirical insights from the new area of the quotation process.

In essence, Open Data (OD) is the information available in a machine-readable format and without restrictions on the permissions for using or distributing it. Open Data may include textual artifacts, or non-textual, such as images, maps, scientific formulas, and other. The data can be publicized and maintained by different entities, both public and private. The data are often federated, meaning that various data sources are aggregated in data sets at a single "online" location. Despite its power to distribute free knowledge, OD initiatives face some important challenges related to its growth. In this paper, we consider one of them, namely, the business and technical concerns of OD clients that would make them able to utilize Open Data in their enterprise information systems and thus benefit in terms of improvements of their service and products in continuous and sustainable ways. Formally, we describe these concerns by means of high-level requirements and guidelines for development and run-time monitoring of IT-supported business capabilities, which should be able to consume Open Data, as well as able to adjust when the data updates based on a situational change. We illustrated our theoretical proposal by applying it on the service concerning regional roads maintenance in Latvia.

Process monitoring aims to provide transparency over operational aspects of a business process. In practice, it is a challenge that traces of business process executions span across a number of diverse systems. It is cumbersome manual engineering work to identify which attributes in unstructured event data can serve as case and activity identifiers for extracting and monitoring the business process. Approaches from literature assume that these identifiers are known a priori and data is readily available in formats like eXtensible Event Stream (XES). However, in practice this is hardly the case, specifically when event data from different sources are pooled together in event stores. In this paper, we address this research gap by inferring potential case and activity identifiers in a provenance agnostic way. More specifically, we propose a semiautomatic technique for discovering event relations that are semantically relevant for business process monitoring. The results are evaluated in an industry case study with an international telecommunication provider.

A central conflict in decision and problem solving support is known as the 'Power/Generality' trade-off. The incorporation of a high level of domain-specific concepts and mechanisms in a decision instrument will increase the instrument's power but will do so at the cost of the instrument's generality. This paper has two purposes. First, it brings to attention the power/generality conflict in conceptual decision and problem solving modeling, and it demonstrates the resultant problems in relation to an existing enterprise decision modeling language. Second, the paper proposes the use of a multi-level modeling paradigm as a possible resolution of the conflict, and it proposes concrete re-conceptualizations for an existing modeling language to alleviate the associated problems.

Stakeholders are crucial participants for eliciting requirements towards a new software solution. However, agreeing a common understanding among them is a complex task in a project's initial phase when solution requirements and design need to be refined and/or are unknown. In order to not delay the initial phase and thus endanger the entire project, this paper proposes a process to elicit functional requirements and to design a candidate logical architecture (i.e., without refining information), called Agile Modeling Process for Logical Architectures (AMPLA). By eliciting a set of "just-enough" UML Use Cases, i.e., that includes at least the core requirements information, it is proposed the use of a logical architecture derivation method, the Four-Step-Rule-Set (4SRS). This approach is suitable in agile software development contexts, where the solution's architecture is not known upfront.
