Predictive process monitoring is concerned with anticipating the future behavior of running process instances. Prior work primarily focused on the performance of monitoring approaches and spent little effort on understanding other aspects such as reliability. This limits the potential to reuse the approaches across scenarios. From this starting point, we discuss how synthetic data can facilitate a better understanding of approaches and then use synthetic data in two experiments. We focus on prediction as classification of process instances during execution, solely considering the discrete event behavior. First, we compare different feature representations and reveal that sub-trace occurrence can cover a broader variety of relationships in the data than other representations. Second, we present evidence that the popular strategy of cutting traces to certain prefix lengths to learn prediction models for ongoing instances is prone to yield unreliable models and that the underlying problem can be avoided by using approaches that learn from complete traces. Our experiments provide a basis for future research and highlight that an evaluation solely targeting performance incurs the risk of incorrectly assessing benefits and limitations.

Process mining helps organizations to investigate how their operational processes are executed and how these can be improved. Process mining requires event logs extracted from information systems supporting these processes. The eXtensible Event Stream (XES) format is the current standard which requires a case notion to correlate events. However, it has problems to deal with object-centric data (e.g., database tables) due to the existence of one-to-many and many-to-many relations. In this paper, we propose an approach to extract, transform and store object-centric data, resulting in eXtensible Object-Centric (XOC) event logs. The XOC format does not require a case notion to avoid flattening multi-dimensional data. Besides, based on so-called object models which represent the states of a database, a XOC log can reveal the evolution of the database along with corresponding events. Dealing with object-centric data enables new process mining techniques that are able to capture the real processes much better.

One impact of the digital transformation of industry is an increasing automation of business processes (BPs) and the accompanying need for business process modeling (BPM) and comprehension. The subsequent increased number of processes and process variants to cover all cases, their deeper integration with information services, and additional process structural complexity affects comprehensibility. While virtual reality (VR) has made inroads in other domains and become readily accessible as a graphical interface alternative, its potential for addressing upcoming BPM comprehension challenges has not been sufficiently explored. This paper contributes a solution for visualizing, navigating, inter-acting with, and annotating business process modeling notation (BPMN) models in VR. An implementation shows its feasibility and an empirical study evaluates the effectiveness, efficiency, and intuitiveness versus alternative model depiction modes.

The continuous digitization requires organizations to improve the automation of their business processes. Among others, this has lead to an increased interest in Robotic Process Automation (RPA). RPA solutions emerge in the form of software that automatically executes repetitive and routine tasks. While the benefits of RPA on cost savings and other relevant performance indicators have been demonstrated in different contexts, one of the key challenges for RPA endeavors is to effectively identify processes and tasks that are suitable for automation. Textual process descriptions, such as work instructions, provide rich and important insights about this matter. However, organizations often maintain hundreds or even thousands of them, which makes a manual analysis unfeasible for larger organizations. Recognizing the large manual effort required to determine the current degree of automation in an organization's business processes, we use this paper to propose an approach that is able to automatically do so. More specifically, we leverage supervised machine learning to automatically identify whether a task described in a textual process description is manual, an interaction of a human with an information system or automated. An evaluation with a set of 424 activities from a total of 47 textual process descriptions demonstrates that our approach produces satisfactory results.

The study presents the results of an investigation into the acceptance of mobile technology usage for knowledge providing in different contexts: (1) educational/work environment, (2) mobile users' professional background (related and non-related to information and communication technology (ICT)), and (3) individuals' age. The Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) was adjusted for the purpose of explaining and predicting mobile users' intentions. Then, the model was empirically examined using the structural equation modeling (SEM) with the dataset of 303 individuals. The results reveal differences in mobile technology usage acceptance in different subgroups of respondents. However, similar results of hypothesis testing were obtained for respondents without ICT background and older respondents. The research findings imply the necessity of adjusting the content distributed via mobile devices to recipients' age, their ICT skills, and context of usage, i.e. education versus work environment.

As a megatrend, the so-called Digital Transformation describes the entire potential of new technologies in economy. Thereby new approaches are needed to reveal this potential for companies. Looking at the literature a structured guideline is missing to reveal this potential by developing new digital business models (DBM) from the scratch. Therefore, this paper develops a structured framework to create ideas for DBMs. It contributes to business research by improving the initiation of digital reengineering. The resulting framework is called the Digitization Driven Design model (=D-3 model). The application of this approach is described with a consulting-company use case. Initial evaluations show the first promising expert feedbacks and possibilities for future research.

Health information systems are key assets in managing health units' daily operations. Nevertheless, literature is scarce concerning information systems for increasing and managing hospital productivity. This study aims at filling such gap through an empirical research based on large Portuguese hospital. Specifically, a dashboard prototype is proposed addressing productivity indicators in areas such as assistance, hospitalization, surgery, among others. This dashboard is tuned using a design science research approach where health experts successively validate the prototype. Interviews are conducted to assess the benefits of using our proposal to manage productivity on a daily basis.

The purpose of this paper is to identify prerequisites for successful production transfers i.e. for achieving a stable production at the receiver at targeted supply-performance levels. The research findings consist of a collection of 43 prerequisites identified in the extant literature and structured according to the main transfer phases. Moreover, the authors present the challenges encountered during two transfers of electronics production, and discuss how those challenges could have been avoided or easily dealt with if some of the identified prerequisites had been in place. The paper provides a detailed overview over recommended activities when transferring production. In addition, risk-mitigation measures are highlighted along the transfer process, and there are suggested methods and tools for supply-chain risk management. Practitioners can use the collection of prerequisites as a checklist when preparing the transfer plan. These results represent a first step towards configuring a project development model for systematic production transfer management.

Open government data initiatives result in the expectation of having open data available. Nevertheless, some potential risks like sensitivity, privacy, ownership, misinterpretation, and misuse of the data result in the reluctance of governments to open their data. At this moment, there is no comprehensive overview nor a model to understand the mechanisms resulting in risk when opening data. This study is aimed at developing a Bayesian-belief Networks (BbN) model to analyse the causal mechanism resulting in risks when opening data. An explanatory approach based on the four main steps is followed to develop a BbN. The model presents a better understanding of the causal relationship between data and risks and can help governments and other stake-holders in their decision to open data. We use the literature review base to quantify the probability of risk variables to give an illustration in the interrogating process. For the further study, we recommend using expert's judgment for quantifying the probability of the risk variables in opening data.

Involvement of potential users in early stages of elaboration of development methods is needed for successful method adoption in practice. This paper reports on activities of introduction and assessment of the Capability Driven Development (CDD) methodology with a group of industry representatives. This was performed in an interactive workshop and the main evaluation objectives were to assess the relevance of the CDD concepts and their recognizability as well as to identify potential use cases for CDD application. A dialogical approach was used to convey the CDD methodology to the participants and to entice discussions. The main findings are that the participants easily recognized the modeling constructs for capability design. They found that adjustments are particularly useful for the purpose of identification capability steering actions. The use cases described by the participants were later formalized as capability models.
