The widespread adoption of the World Wide Web has fundamentally changed the landscape of software development. Only ten years ago, very few developers would write software for the Web, let alone consider using JavaScript or other web technologies for writing any serious software applications. In this paper, we reflect upon a twelve-year adventure in web development that began with the development of the Lively Kernel system at Sun Microsystems Labs in 2006. Back then, we also published some papers that identified important challenges in web-based software development based on established software engineering principles. We will revisit our earlier findings and compare the state of the art in web development today to our earlier learnings, followed by some reflections and suggestions for the road forward. © Springer International Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature 2018.

One of the crucial requirements before consuming datasets for any application is to understand the dataset at hand and its metadata. The process of metadata discovery is known as data profiling. Profiling activities range from ad-hoc approaches, such as eye-balling random subsets of the data or formulating aggregation queries, to systematic inference of metadata via profiling algorithms. In this course, we will discuss the importance of data profiling as part of any data-related use-case, and shed light on the area of data profiling by classifying data profiling tasks and reviewing the state-of-the-art data profiling systems and techniques. In particular, we discuss hard problems in data profiling, such as algorithms for dependency discovery and their application in data management and data analytics. Sometimes data is generated unboundedly and at such a fast pace that it is no longer possible to store the complete data in a database. The development of techniques for handling and processing such streams of data is very challenging as the streaming context imposes severe constraints on the computation: we are often not able to store the whole data stream and making multiple passes over the data is no longer possible. As the stream is never finished we need to be able to continuously provide, upon request, up-to-date answers to analysis queries. Even problems that are highly trivial in an off-line context, such as: "How many different items are there in my database?" become very hard in a streaming context. Nevertheless, in the past decades several clever algorithms were developed to deal with streaming data. This paper covers several of these indispensable tools that should be present in every big data scientists’ toolbox, including approximate frequency counting of frequent items, cardinality estimation of very large sets, and fast nearest neighbor search in huge data collections. © 2018, Springer International Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature.

Services are today over 70% of the Gross National Product in most developed countries. The productivity improvement of services is increasingly important and it relies heavily on a deep understanding of the service processes. However, how to collect data from services has been a problem and service data is largely missing in national statistics, which brings challenges to service process modelling. This work aims to simplify the procedure of automated process modelling, and focuses on modelling generic service processes that are location-aware. An approach based on wireless indoor positioning is developed to acquire the minimum amount of location-based process data that can be used to automatically extract the process models. The extracted models can be further used to analyse the possible improvements of the service processes. This approach has been tested and used in dental care clinics. Besides, the automated modelling approach can be used to greatly improve the traditional process modelling in various other service industries. © IFIP International Federation for information processing 2018 Published by Springer International Publishing AG 2018. Web performance characteristics of HTTP/2 and comparison to HTTP/1.1 1

The HTTP/1.1 protocol has long been a staple on the web, for both pages and apps. However, it has started to show its age, especially with regard to page load performance and the overhead it entails due to its use of multiple underlying connections. Its successor, the newly standardized HTTP/2, aims to improve the protocol’s performance and reduce its overhead by (1) multiplexing multiple resources over a single TCP connection, (2) by using advanced prioritization strategies and by introducing new features such as (3) Server Push and (4) HPACK header compression. This work provides an in-depth overview of these four HTTP/2 performance aspects, discussing both synthetic and realistic experiments, to determine the gains HTTP/2 can provide in comparison to HTTP/1.1 in various settings. We find that the single multiplexed connection can actually become a significant performance bottleneck in poor network conditions with high packet loss and that HTTP/2 rarely improves much on HTTP/1.1, except in terms of reduced overhead. Prioritization strategies, Server Push and HPACK compression are found to have a relatively limited impact on web performance, but together with other observed HTTP/2 performance problems this could also be due to faulty current implementations, of which we have discovered various examples. © Springer International Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature 2018.

In the last years, a multi-host environment, that means, having at our disposal multiple connected devices, had become common in our daily lives. We are inundated with many services and applications with a promise to enhance our daily. However, the opposite occurs. We spend too much time and effort to use the same services in all multi-hosts we own. For dealing with this gap, we propose a model based on some principles of Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) to achieve Liquid Software concepts. This approach requires a service design with an innovate and a unified interface which can drift between different connected devices and bring us with its behavior and complexities. In this context, based on REST and RESTful principles and constraints we propose an innovate centric-basic architecture to deal with multi-hosts. The CUBE, once finished, will allow that both services and multi-hosts discovery for migration across its system to enhance the usability of all devices owned by the same user. © Springer International Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature 2018.

business Process Management (BPM) is fundamental in IT/IS systems requirement specifications and is also well positioned in Enterprise Architecture (EA) frameworks and practices. Continuous Improvement (CI) relates to agendas of lean, six sigma, and incessant push for increased effectiveness of the organization. This paper is developing a position of EA-driven BPM as being long-term, strategic and "slow", whereas CI is short-term, operational and "fast". A case study is presented, where CI is furthermore locally based and BPM is centrally based in a larger organization. This leads to conflicts between BPM and CI where the corporate value of both is eroded as IS initiatives on ERP implementation are prolonged and CI initiatives fail to match to-be scenarios. This paper discuss EA as a mediator, where EA is communicating business opportunities to "positive" CI initiatives and aiming at stopping "negative" CI initiatives. An EA-based process tracing mechanism is suggested and demonstrated connecting business processes, ERP, and silo-based elements for CI initiatives. Furthermore, a CI project management tool is discussed to outline screening opportunities for EA-based CI reviews. An agenda is developed to ensure that CI projects are developed according to the Enterprise Architecture and developed along the organizational architecture and not as silo projects. Furthermore Enterprise Architecture is in such case not alone to induce changes and EA must develop methods to synchronise and coordinate with other change processes. © Springer International Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature 2018.

The growing number of XML documents leads to the need for appropriate XML querying algorithms which are able to utilize the specific characteristics of XML documents. A labelling scheme is fundamental to processing XML queries efficiently. They are used to determine structural relationships between elements corresponding to query nodes in twig pattern queries (TPQs). This article presents a design and implementation of a new indexing technique which exploits the property of prime numbers to identify Parent-Child (P-C) relationships in TPQs during query evaluation. The Child Prime Label (CPL, for short) approach can be efficiently incorporated within the existing labelling schemes. Here, we propose a novel twig matching algorithm based on the well known TwigStack algorithm [3], which applies the CPL approach and focuses on reducing the overhead of storing useless elements and performing unnecessary join operations. Our performance evaluation demonstrates that the new algorithm significantly outperforms the previous approaches. © Springer International Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature 2018.

This paper demonstrates the role of pre-product user experience (UX) in product design. For automotive companies, questions concerning how users will experience not yet available products is pressing - due to an increase in UX design for products, combined with a decrease in time-to-market for new products. Conventional UX research provides insights through investigating specific situated moments during use, or users’ reflections after use, yet cannot provide knowledge about how users will engage with not yet existing products. To understand pre-product UX we undertook a netnographic study of three people’s experiences of expecting and owning a Tesla car. We identified how modes of anticipation evolve before using the actual car, through online social interaction, creating a pre-product experience. The study offers a foundation for theorizing pre-product UX as socially generated anticipated UX, as well as insights for UX design in industry. © Springer International Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature 2018.

While the term application is known for a long time, what we now refer to as mobile apps has facilitated task-oriented, interoperable software. The term was initially only used for smartphones and tablets, but desktop software now is also referred to as apps. More important than the wording, however, is the trend towards app-enablement of many further kinds of devices such as smart TVs and wearables. App-enabled devices usually share some characteristics and developing apps is often similar. However, many complexities must be mastered: Device fragmentation and cross-platform app development already are challenging when only considering smartphones. When trying to grasp the field as a whole, app-enabled devices appear as a jungle: it becomes increasingly hard to get an overview. Devices might not be easy to categorize let alone to compare. Investigating similarities and differences is not straightforward, as the outer appearance might be deceiving, and technological peculiarities are often complex in nature. This article aims at mastering the jungle. For this purpose, we propose a taxonomy for app-enabled devices. It provides clear terms and facilitates precision when discussing devices. Besides presenting the taxonomy and the rationale behind it, this article invites for discussion. © Springer International Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature 2018.
