Deep learning is one of the fastest growing areas of machine learning and a hot topic in both academia and industry. This tutorial tries to figure out what are the real mechanisms that make this technique a breakthrough with respect to the past. Mashing up existing components allows end users to build custom web applications in order to fulfill situation-specific needs. However, creating and even using mashup applications still turn out to be complicated tasks for non-programmers. Main challenges include understanding the composite nature of mashups and their functionality. Non-programmers typically lack awareness for inter-widget communication and understanding of the functionality individual components and especially a set of combined components provide. Thus, they may struggle to use components as intended. Prevalent mashup approaches provide no or limited concepts and assistance tools in this regard, resulting in more or less successful trial and error strategies of users. In this paper, we introduce novel techniques for exploration, explanation and awareness of mashup functionality. These concepts assist non-programmers to better understand and to be aware of the capabilities that components and their interplay in a mashup provide. Based on annotated component descriptions, interactive explanations and stepwise tutorials are generated and presented directly in the components’ user interface. Additionally, mashup functionality can be explored and active inter-widget communication is visualized to foster awareness of non-programmers. We present our iterative design process which led us from early concepts towards our current solution. The proposed approach is validated with the help of a prototypical implementation within our mashup platform and evaluated by means of a user study. The results indicate that our concepts helps non-programmers to better understand and leverage the functionality of composite web applications. © Springer International Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature 2018.

Open Data portals have become a common service provided by many Public Administrations around the world, where they openly publish many data sets concerning citizens and territories, in order to increase the amount of information made available for people, firms and public administrators. As an effect, Open Data corpora has become so huge that it is impossible to deal with them by hand;as a consequence, it is necessary to develop tools for effectively querying corpora of open data, in order to find the desired data sets. In our previous work [1], we presented a novel technique to query open data corpora. In this paper, we present an evolution of that technique, obtained by refining some steps and by introducing some novelties. We still rely on the blindly querying approach: the user does not have to know in advance the actual structure of possibly thousands of data sets, but formulates the query trying to characterize the items of interests;in fact, a novelty of our approach is that our technique looks for single items within data sets, not for data sets. Then, the technique tries to rewrite the query by exploiting the catalog of the corpus in order to find the most similar and relevant terms. The main enhancement introduced in the technique and presented in this paper is the way the technique looks for similar terms in the catalog, that now is based on a semantic approach: the WordNet dictionary is exploited to get synonyms of terms in the query. Furthermore, a new set of experiments has been performed, in order to prove the effectiveness of the enhanced technique. © Springer International Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature 2018.

Web search engines are used daily to find information, helping the user to surf the web. Web searching is the most popular online activity and although search engines regularly use updated indexes to run quickly and efficiently, they sometimes fail to keep the user on their page for a long time. As such, it is important to have the lowest delay in response time. Therefore, it is essential to understand what load is supported by each search engine by conducting load testing. These tests have the objective of optimizing the performance of the application being tested, thus verifying the maximum amount of data that is processed. In this paper we conduct a comparative analysis of the four most popular web platform assessment tools, Apache JMeter, Apache Flood, The Grinder and Gatling. As important as the search engine response time is the accuracy of returned results, that is, the amount of correct links related to what was searched for. For that reason, the accuracy of results returned by web search engines are also evaluated. In the experimental evaluation we use two tools: Apache jMeter and The Grinder, to compare with the web search engines: Google, Bing, Ask and Aol Search. © Springer International Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature 2018.

In model-driven engineering (MDE), models are mostly used in prescriptive ways for system engineering. While prescriptive models are indeed an important ingredient to realize a system, for later phases in the systems’ lifecycles additional model types are beneficial to use. Unfortunately, current MDE approaches mostly neglect the information upstream in terms of descriptive models from operations to (re)design phases. To tackle this limitation, we propose execution-based model profiling as a continuous process to improve prescriptive models at design-time through runtime information. This approach incorporates knowledge in terms of model profiles from execution logs of the running system. To accomplish this, we combine techniques of process mining with runtime models of MDE. In the course of a case study, we make use of a traffic light system example to demonstrate the feasibility and benefits of the introduced execution-based model profiling approach. © IFIP International Federation for information processing 2018 Published by Springer International Publishing AG 2018. Currently, there is a lack of rule-based approaches that offer rich semantics that developers can use to exploit community knowledge contributed by distributed heterogeneous clients. Such abstractions can be useful in a number of applications to deal with the problem of orchestrating data patterns in a heterogeneous setting. This work presents scope-based reasoning in heterogeneous rule engines as a means to capture collective intelligence via community knowledge. Using scoped rules, rule designers can detect patterns in real-time data and to realise grouping structures in heterogeneous applications backed by a common rule-based system. The proposed solution exploits the fact that much of the heterogeneous community knowledge significant when performing reasoning and deductions can be structured hierarchically. We evaluate our work through a simulated case study, confirming that our technique presents a viable approach for efficiently processing community knowledge in heterogeneous environments. © Springer International Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature 2018.

While the worldwide market expansion of Uber has raised controversy, Uber has also received praise for its mobile phone app. Its many features – taxi ordering, pricing, real-time location information, paying, and service evaluation – have provided significant customer value. When Uber entered Finland in November 2014, few other taxi apps were available. Between 2014 and 2018, this shortage of taxi apps turned into an abundance, with many companies introducing their own taxi apps. By leaning on institutional theory, and more specifically by applying coercive, mimetic and normative pressures as a lens, we provide an explanation for why three Finnish taxi apps now resemble Uber in some features, whereas they differ in others. Based on our interviews, we can explain the present-day differences between these apps by coercive and normative pressures in the institutional environment of the Finnish taxi industry. We contribute to the IT and institutionalization research stream by illustrating how mobile applications as IT artefacts can be seen as carriers of institutional pressures materializing in the features they provide. © Springer International Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature 2018.

Extract-Transform-Load (ETL) processes are used for extracting data, transforming it and loading it into data warehouses (DWs). The dominating ETL tools use graphical user interfaces (GUIs) such that the developer "draws" the ETL flow by connecting steps/transformations with lines. This gives an easy overview, but can also be rather tedious and require much trivial work for simple things. We therefore challenge this approach and propose to do ETL programming by writing code. To make the programming easy, we present the Python-based framework pygrametl which offers commonly used functionality for ETL development. By using the framework, the developer can efficiently create effective ETL solutions from which the full power of programming can be exploited. In this chapter, we present our work on pygrametl and related activities. Further, we consider some of the lessons learned during the development of pygrametl as an open source framework. © 2018, Springer International Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature.

business Process Model and Notation (BPMN) is a standard graphical notation that is widely used for modeling business Processes (BP) in business Process Management (BPM) systems. A key application of such systems is continuous analysis of BP execution for checking compliance of execution logs with process models. In this paper we introduce a simple, human-readable rule language based on a fragment of First-Order Logic (FOL) and show how compliance rules can be generated directly from BPMN models. We focus on control flow aspects of BPMN models by (1) transforming the model to obtain a uniform representation of task activation (2) dividing the model into sets of components and (3) using our proposed language to generate compliance rules for each component. We show that these rules can be used in the analysis of the business process execution log using British Telecom’s Aperture business process analysis tool. © IFIP International Federation for information processing 2018 Published by Springer International Publishing AG 2018. Dealing with the abundance of event data is one of the main process discovery challenges. Current process discovery techniques are able to efficiently handle imported event log files that fit in the computer’s memory. Once data files get bigger, scalability quickly drops since the speed required to access the data becomes a limiting factor. This paper proposes a new technique based on relational database technology as a solution for scalable process discovery. A relational database is used both for storing event data (i.e. we move the location of the data) and for pre-processing the event data (i.e. we move some computations from analysis-time to insertion-time). To this end, we first introduce DB-XES as a database schema which resembles the standard XES structure, we provide a transparent way to access event data stored in DB-XES, and we show how this greatly improves on the memory requirements of the state-of-the-art process discovery techniques. Secondly, we show how to move the computation of intermediate data structures to the database engine, to reduce the time required during process discovery. The work presented in this paper is implemented in ProM tool, and a range of experiments demonstrates the feasibility of our approach. © IFIP International Federation for information processing 2018 Published by Springer International Publishing AG 2018.
