Historical graphs capture the evolution of graphs through time. A historical graph can be modeled as a sequence of graph snapshots, where each snapshot corresponds to the state of the graph at the corresponding time instant. There is rich information in the history of the graph not present in just the current snapshot of the graph. In this chapter, we present logical and physical models, query types, systems and algorithms for managing historical graphs. Although information systems and technology have brought many benefits into people’s everyday lives, not to mention society as a whole, they are also accompanied by negative consequences. For example, technostress, anxiety, and even different kinds of addictions are among the side effects of information technology use. Clearly, such negative consequences cannot be fully avoided, but at least some of them may be mitigated via good system design. In this study, we addressed the dark side of information technology use in everyday life and in a leisure context, reviewing contributions from the basket of eight information systems journals published between 2004 and early 2018. In our analysis, we utilized the Persuasive Systems Design model in order to recognize and analyze information system characteristics that may mitigate the negative consequences of information technology use. © Springer International Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature 2018.

Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) allow for web applications to be developed in an offline-first approach. While Web apps traditionally did not properly function without an Internet connection, PWAs enable them to be downloaded, installed and used offline on various systems, including mobile devices and personal computers. We present an introduction to the state-of-art in research and practice. Based on this, we discuss various underlying concepts and technologies. Then, we scrutinize and compare PWAs against cross-platform app development approaches on both technical and overarching aspects. A list of suggestions for future research is also presented. We urge academia to keep up with the latest trends within the field of mobile and web development, as new concepts and approaches such as Progressive Web Apps now make for interesting research topics with tangible real-world effects. © Springer International Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature 2018.

The alignment of observed and modeled behavior is a pivotal issue in process mining because it opens the door for assessing the quality of a process model, as well as the usage of the model as a precise predictor for the execution of a process. This paper presents a novel technique for reduction of a process model based on the notion of indication, by which, the occurrence of an event in the model reveals the occurrence of some other events, hence relegating the later set as less important information when model and log alignment is computed. Once indications relations are computed in the model, both model and log can be reduced accordingly, and then fed to the state of the art approaches for computing alignments. Finally, the (macro)-alignment derived is expanded in these parts containing high-level events that represent a set of indicated events, by using an efficient algorithm taken from bioinformatics that guarantees optimality in the local parts of the alignment. The implementation of the presented techniques shows a significant reduction both in computation time and in memory usage, the latter being a significant barrier to apply the alignment technology on large instances. © IFIP International Federation for information processing 2018 Published by Springer International Publishing AG 2018. It is increasingly common for firms to engage in both external and internal crowdsourcing to access ideas and solutions coming from external customers and internal employees. These IT platforms can be seen as forms of open and closed innovation search, where the first aims to perform distant search beyond the organizational boundaries, while the second is used to conduct local search within the firm. Nevertheless, limited attention has been placed on investigating which tensions emerge when firms combine these conflicting innovation search strategies and related management approaches to address them. By drawing on a qualitative, inductive case study of a large organization headquartered in France, our study identifies and discusses three key paradoxes emerging from pursuing both innovation forms: (1) paradox of identity;(2) paradox of organizing the innovation process;and (3) paradox of boundary management. Moreover, we discuss different management approaches implemented by managers to address the identified paradoxes. © Springer International Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature 2018.

Mobile applications are quickly replacing traditional desktop computing for gaming, social media, email, web browsing, health and fitness, business usage, etc. Many of these mobile apps require that sensitive information (protected health information (PHI) and personally identifiable information (PII)) be displayed, accessed, modified, and stored. In the healthcare domain, there is a need for health information exchange (HIE) among patients and medical providers across a wide range of health information technology (HIT) systems such as electronic health records, e-prescribing, etc., all of which involve highly-sensitive data (PII and PHI) that is exchanged back and forth between the mobile application and its server-side repository/database. In the U.S. in 2015, the Office of the National Coordinator issued a report on certification rules for EHRs that has required that HIT vendors develop RESTful APIs for EHRs and other systems so that patients and medical providers using mobile health (mHealth) applications via the cloud can easily access their healthcare data from multiple sources. This necessitates the consideration that access control mechanisms are candidates to protect highly-sensitive data of such applications via the control of who can call which service. The paper presents the attainment of role-based (RBAC), mandatory (MAC), and discretionary (DAC) access control for RESTful API and cloud services via an Intercepting API Calls approach that is able to define and enforce users of mobile apps to limit the API/cloud services that can be invoked depending on a user’s permissions. Despite the ubiquity of temporal data and considerable research on the effective and efficient processing of such data, database systems largely remain designed for processing the current state of some modeled reality. More recently, we have seen an increasing interest in the processing of temporal data that captures multiple states of reality. The SQL:2011 standard incorporates some temporal support, and commercial DBMSs have started to offer temporal functionality in a step-by-step manner, such as the representation of temporal intervals, temporal primary and foreign keys, and the support for so-called time-travel queries that enable access to past states. This tutorial gives an overview of state-of-the-art research results and technologies for storing, managing, and processing temporal data in relational database management systems. Following an introduction that offers a historical perspective, we provide an overview of basic temporal database concepts. Then we survey the state-of-the-art in temporal database research, followed by a coverage of the support for temporal data in the current SQL standard and the extent to which the temporal aspects of the standard are supported by existing systems. The tutorial ends by covering a recently proposed framework that provides comprehensive support for processing temporal data and that has been implemented in PostgreSQL. © 2018, Springer International Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature.
