This book constitutes revised selected papers from the 13th International Conference on Web information Systems and Technologies, WEBIST 2017, held in Porto, Portugal, in April 2017. The purpose of the WEBIST series of conferences is to bring together researches, engineers and practitioners interested in technological advances and business applications of web-based information systems. The 12 full papers presented in this volume were carefully reviewed and selected from originally 77 paper submissions. They contribute to the understanding of relevant trends of current research on Web information systems and technologies, comprising unified interfaces, Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) as well as a mobile device taxonomy, XML and open data processing, the history of Web engineering, web development for end-users, access control, Web platform assessment, rule engines, and scientific blogging.

People process and communicate information at multiple levels of abstraction when reading, talking, solving problems, designing and interacting with computers. For example, in reading an article, actors may focus on a letter, a word, a clause, a sentence or a paragraph. At any moment, they focus on a particular level of abstraction, do something, and, under certain conditions, move back and forth to other levels until the actors achieve their goal. Not moving between levels of abstraction when necessary, decreases performance. It follows that human-computer interaction should be designed accordingly, yet there is hardly any explicit mention of abstraction levels in studies or guidelines of designing HCI. In this talk, I propose a method for incorporating abstraction levels in the design of HCI as a critical dimension of designing adaptive HCI. The talk demonstrates the ideas with examples of HCI for supporting online reading and group problem solving.

The article presents an approach to extend the functionality and knowledge of Decision Support Systems to answer the requirements of managers of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). It concerns two major aspects of the system, i.e. the interface that takes into account the level of knowledge of the manager, and the interpretation of economic and financial information using the built-in domain ontologies. The project is related to the design of smart decision support systems based on financial ontology and on the model of manager knowledge created by eye-tracking analysis. An experiment was carried out on real financial data extracted from the database of BINOCLE system, developed by Bilander Co. To create a model of manager knowledge, a number of financial analysts, experts and economists were invited to analyze the pre-defined financial reports. Their tasks were observed and analyzed by the eye-tracking system StudioTM, Tobii. The logs of the system as well as the financial ontology have been used to develop the intelligent interface of a Decision Support System.

Many process mining tools and techniques produce output models based on the counting of transitions between tasks or users in an event log. Although this counting can be performed in a forward pass through the event log, when analyzing large event logs according to different perspectives it may become impractical or time-consuming to perform multiple such passes. In this work, we show how transition counting can be parallelized by taking advantage of CPU multi-threading and GPU-accelerated computing. We describe the parallelization strategies, together with a set of experiments to illustrate the performance gains that can be expected with such parallelizations.

With the recent release of the Decision Model and Notation (DMN) specification, standardized decision models can be designed to represent the decisions required for executing business processes. Outsourcing decision logic from process to decision models leads to a separation of concerns and therefore to decision-aware business processes. However, no exhaustive considerations regarding the soundness of the integration of the two types of models have been made so far. Classical soundness checking only looks at the control-flow of a process model. In this paper, we formally define soundness criteria for decision-aware processes that ensure that the process can continue after a decision has been taken, and that all activities following the decision can be executed. A scalable implementation and an analysis of models from participants of an online course on process and decision modeling as well as a from a BPM project of a large insurance company demonstrate the benefits of our contribution.

Affective communication and emotions are an important part of negotiations. Negotiation support and negotiation support systems, however, tend to neglect this aspect given extant measurement difficulties. This study explores the possibilities of state of the art supervised machine learning techniques to classify emotions expressed in negotiation communication during electronic negotiation experiments. The affective content of the exchanged messages was determined by human coders and classified according to the circumflex model of affect. The output of this laborious activity, that can only be accomplished after a negotiation, which makes it irrelevant for negotiation support, was input to this study. Promising performance of some preprocessing and machine learning techniques was achieved. Especially the category of activating negative emotions, which is highly important in negotiations as it might reduce the prospects of reaching an agreement, was correctly classified quite often.

Enterprise Architecture Management (EAM) deals with the assessment and development of business processes and IT components. Through the analysis of as-is and to-be states the information flow in organizations is optimized. Thus EAM analyses are an essential part in the EAM cycle. To cover the needs of an architect the analyses pursue different goals and utilize different techniques. In this work we examine the different EA analysis approaches according to their characteristics and requirements. For that purpose we design a generic analysis language which can be used for their description. In order to manage the numerous approaches from literature we develop a categorization. The categories are created based on the goals, constructs and kind of results. We propose a two-dimensional classification into functional and technical categories. The goal is to provide a common description for EA analyses for an easy access to their goals and execution requirements.
