We explore the emotional effects of implementing Facebook in an aged care facility and evaluate whether computers and Facebook are of any benefit in regard to an elderly person's feeling of social connectedness. This preliminary qualitative study took place in a Melbourne-based elected Aged Care Facility. Facebook was accessed through desktop computers provided by the Facility. During a four month pilot project, six residents were supervised to learn how to competently Facebook. Findings indicate that older people are able to connect and learn the use of new technologies with which they may be unfamiliar. While high levels of user enjoyment were found, measures of social connectedness resulting from the use of Facebook use were inconclusive. The research concludes that when supported with appropriate teaching and technology, the use of computers to access Facebook is a practical approach in supporting the connectedness needs of the residents.

Crowdsourcing marketplaces link large populations of workers to an even larger number of tasks. Thus, it is necessary to have mechanisms for matching workers with interesting and suitable tasks. Earlier work has addressed the problem of finding optimal workers for a given set of tasks. However, workers also have preferences and will stay with a platform only if it gives them interesting tasks. We therefore analyze several matching mechanisms that take into account workers' preferences as well. We propose that the workers pay premiums to get preferred matches and auction-based models where preferences are expressed through variations of the payment for a task. We analyze the properties of two matching different mechanisms: Split Dynamic VCG (SDV) and e-Auction. We compare both the mechanisms with Arrival Priority Serial Dictatorship (APSD) empirically for efficiency.

Over the past decade, several sophisticated analytic techniques such as machine learning, neural networks, and predictive modelling have evolved to enable scientists to derive insights from data. Data Science is characterised by a cycle of model selection, customization and testing, as scientists often do not know the exact goal or expected results beforehand. Existing research efforts which explore maximising automation, reproducibility and interoperability are quite mature and fail to address a third criterion, usability. The main contribution of this paper is to explore the development of more complex semantic data models linked with existing ontologies (e.g. FIBO) that enable the standardisation of data formats as well as meaning and interpretation of data in automated data analysis. A model-driven architecture with the reference model that capture statistical learning requirement is proposed together with a prototype based around a case study in commodity pricing.

Innovations of information and communication technology (ICT) open plenty opportunities to promote internal operation efficiency and external service level in logistics. As current logistics developments tend to be more complex in operation and large in scale, recent practices start to pay more attentions on improving asset (e.g. equipment and infrastructure) management performance with new ICT development. One of the primary concern is to improve system robustness and reliability. It not only requires the supervision system be capable of diagnosing the condition of the system, but also proficient to find the intrinsic relationship between different conditions and resources thus lead to an integrated decision making process. Moreover, recent ICT innovations, such as WSN and IOT, could record and deliver system descriptors (physical measurements, virtual resources, operational configurations) in real time. Such large-stream and heterogeneous data requires an integrated framework to process and management. To address such challenges, in this paper, a novel concept of context-aware supervision is proposed. An intelligent system with integration of semantic web and agent technology is developed, which aims at providing condition-monitoring and maintenance decisions to relevant user. A generic ontology-agent based framework will be illustrated. The developed system will be applied for the supervision of a large-scale material handling system-belt conveying system as a proof-of-concept.

In many auction settings we find a self-interested information broker, that can potentially disambiguate the uncertainty associated with the common value of the auctioned item (e.g., the true condition of an auctioned car, the sales forecast for a company offered for sale). This paper extends prior work, that has considered mostly the information pricing question in this archetypal three-ply bidders-auctioneer-information broker model, by enabling the information broker a richer strategic behavior in the form of anonymously eliminating some of the uncertainty associated with the common value, for free. The analysis of the augmented model enables illustrating two somehow non-intuitive phenomena in such settings: (a) the information broker indeed may benefit from disclosing for free some of the information she wishes to sell, even though this seemingly reduces the uncertainty her service aims to disambiguate;and (b) the information broker may benefit from publishing the free information to the general public rather than just to the auctioneer, hence preventing the edge from the latter, even if she is the only prospective customer of the service. While the extraction of the information broker's optimal strategy is computationally hard, we propose two heuristics that rely on the variance between the different values, as means for generating potential solutions that are highly efficient. The importance of the results is primarily in providing information brokers with a new paradigm for improving their expected profit in auction settings. The new paradigm is also demonstrated to result, in some cases, in a greater social welfare, hence can be of much interest to market designers as well.

business process modeling and business process management has been used to capture, support and improve a large variety of processes and practices in the private and public sector. Traditionally what is regarded as a good business process is strongly related to economic dimensions. With the increasing importance of assuring sustainable development, BPM techniques should to an increasing degree be able to be used to support the goal of sustainability of the supported or automated solution. This paper provides results from a case study in the Carbon Track and Trace (CTT) project on supporting the compilation and reporting of data on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions on the city level in the form of GHG inventories. Although basic BPM-techniques are applicable on this levels, we have identified a number of challenges and potential improvements to represent the relevant aspects in such cases to support automated and semi-automated solutions.

The emerging concept of multidimensional process mining adopts the ideas of data cubes and OLAP to analyze processes from multiple views. Analysts can split the event log into a set of homogenous sublogs according to its case and event attributes. Process mining techniques are used to create an individual process model for each sublog representing variants of the process. These models can be compared to identify the differences between the variants. Due to the explorative character of the analysis, interactivity is crucial to successfully apply multidimensional process mining. However, current approaches lack interactivity, e.g., they require the analyst to re-perform the analysis steps after changing the view on the data cube. In this paper, we introduce a novel framework to improve the interactivity of multidimensional process mining. As our main contribution, we provide a generic concept for interactive process mining based on a stack of operations.

The Power TAC is a competition-based simulation of an electricity market. The goal of the competition is to test retailer (broker) strategies in a competitive environment. Participants create broker agents that trade electricity. In this paper we describe our broker, which we created as a participant of the 2014 Power TAC competition. We describe the strategies for two main components of the game: the tariff market and the wholesale market. We also discuss the performance of our broker in the competition, where we were second in the final ranking.

In many successful companies, teams work together virtually instead of face to face. These teams are supported by technology, allowing effective virtual teamwork across the globe. Some companies are even successful in business without any offices at all. The ways of working in virtual teams appear to be ingrained in these companies' cultures. The paper at hand performs a case study analysis synthesizing individual patterns found in companies that are built on virtual teamwork to a generic organizational pattern. This generic pattern can be deployed to support changes due to virtuality and digitalization in more traditional companies. The case study analysis provides a holistic view on virtual teamwork and contributes to research on this evolution.

A social network enables individuals to communicate with each other by posting information, comments, messages, images, etc. In most applications, a social network is modelled by a graph with vertices and edges. Vertices represent individuals and edges represent social interactions between the individuals. A social network is said to have community structure if the nodes of the network can be grouped into sets of nodes such that each set is densely connected internally. The investigation of the community structure in the social network is an important issue in many domains and disciplines such as marketing and bio-informatics. Community detection in social networks can be considered as a graph clustering problem where each community corresponds to a cluster in the graph. The goal of conventional community detection methods is to partition a graph such that every node belongs to exactly one cluster. However, in many social networks, nodes participate in multiple communities. Therefore, a node's communities can be interpreted as its social circles. Thus, it is likely that a node belongs to multiple communities. We propose in this paper a new overlapping community detection method which can be adopted for several real world social networks requiring non-disjoint community detection.
