There is a broad consensus that design decision making is important for business Process Management success. Despite many business process design approaches and practices that are available, the quality of business process analysis and design relies heavily on human factors. Some of these factors concern cognitive biases. In this paper, we explore the role of cognitive biases in four key issues regarding the design-time phases of the business process management lifecycle. We outline some research directions that may help us understand and improve the effects of cognitive biases in the design-related practices of business process management.

Hospitals have increasingly embraced their role as centers for innovation and much attention has focused on technology transfer, translational research and even social innovation. Here we explore how open innovation could be a viable strategy for health organizations in contemporary society with its reliance on advanced information and communication technology. The study focuses on (a) innovation centers in hospitals by examining two variables important to open innovation: (i) the direction of value creation and (ii) innovation form, and (b) the development of scenarios for open innovation in healthcare by engaged practitioners in the field. The findings suggest some noteworthy variation in form and direction of innovation for healthcare. Most notably, although innovation is attended to, open initiatives do not loom large today. However, we also see that the future may bring something completely different with a focus on healthcare rather than hospitals. The results suggest direction for future empirical work and strategy development for designing healthcare systems as well as for open innovation practice.

Flexible business processes can often be represented more easily using a declarative process modeling language (DPML) rather than an imperative language. Process mining techniques can be used to automate the discovery of process models. One way to evaluate process mining techniques is to synthesize event logs from a source model via simulation techniques and to compare the discovered model with the source model. Though there are several declarative process mining techniques, there is a lack of simulation approaches. Process models also involve multiple aspects, like the flow of activities and resource assignment constraints. The simulation approach at hand automatically synthesizes event logs that conform to a given model specified in the multi-perspective, declarative language DPIL. Our technique translates DPIL constraints to a logic language called Alloy. A formula-analysis step is the actual log generation. We evaluate our technique with a concise example and describe an alternative configuration to simulate event logs based on an assumed partial execution as well as on properties that are intended to be checked. We complement the quality evaluation by a performance analysis.

From having been exclusive for companies in the online domain, feature experiments are becoming increasingly important for software-intensive companies also in other domains. Today, companies run experiments, such as e.g. A/B tests, to optimize product performance and to learn about user behaviors, as well as to guide product development and innovation. However, although experimentation with customers has become an effective mechanism to improve products and increase revenue, companies struggle with how to leverage the results of the experiments they run. In this paper, we study the reasons for this and we identify three key challenges that make feature experimentation a difficult task. Our research reveals the following challenges: (1) the impact of experiments doesn't scale, (2) business KPIs and team level metrics are not aligned and (3) it is unclear if the available solutions are applicable across domains.

Software processes usually include activities involving several people playing different roles. SPEM provides primitives for defining all the roles involved in each activity. Software process specification notations are not executable and thus supporting tools cannot provide this functionality. Therefore, even having a formal software process specification we cannot achieve all the potential benefits: people have difficulties in following their responsibilities, resulting in a low productivity. The business process domain provides notations that can be executed on a BPMS. There have been attempts to transform SPEM specifications into BPMN. However, there is no natural way to model multi-role tasks in BPMN, and therefore none of these proposals has solved this issue. In this paper we discuss two promising alternatives for modeling multi-role software activities in BPMN: defining compound roles and modeling multi-role tasks as independent processes. We provide an XSLT transformation for automatically generating each of these solutions from a software process specification. We use a real world running example to illustrate the approach.

The different needs and domains of enterprises and how they employ EA modelling languages and tools can give rise to heterogeneity at the syntactical, structural and semantical levels. In particular, models dealing with the process perspective are becoming increasingly complex and hetereogeneous. This raises difficulties in managing and reusing EA models. To address the heterogeneity of EA models, we propose an approach that relies on encoding the models as OWL ontologies, then applying ontology matching techniques to map them. By using ontology-based techniques applied to the heterogeneity analysis of EA models. We have applied our approach to a well known benchmarking data set (EMISA-PMMC) encoded in BPMN. This involved the creation of a novel ontology matching algorithm specifically designed for business processes and their integration in a state of the art ontology matching system, AgreementMakerLight.

Existing models of negotiation as a process are incomplete and do not show an overall, end to end process. The phases of existing models have not been clearly defined by identifying their boundaries. After reviewing contributions of existing models, the paper identifies phases, clarifies their boundaries, and proposes a bird's eye level model supported by examples in academic literature and public sources. Although an ideal model, it is a guideline and not a strict prescription for success. The proposed model contributes to theory around negotiation by providing a clarifying look at the overall sequence of macro phases in negotiation. With the model, academics and practitioners have a unified starting point for monitoring, communicating, and further developing negotiation models.

Dynamic markets and new technology developments lead to an increasing number of compliance requirements. Thus, affected business processes must be flexible and adaptable. Ensuring business processes compliance (BPC) is traditionally operationalized by means of controls, which can be described as simple target-performance comparisons. Since such controls are not always suitable for achieving BPC, the view is extended by so-called compliance processes. However, the definition and design of appropriate compliance processes for effective BPC depend on a multitude of process characteristics. To address this issue on a general level, we developed a taxonomy for compliance processes consisting of 9 dimensions and 37 characteristics. As a result, the taxonomy allows researchers and practitioners to classify compliance processes according to the state of the art in a formal way. Furthermore, it provides a systematic fundament for greater flexibility, i.e. an ad hoc integration of compliance processes into ongoing business processes to ensure BPC during runtime.

Practitioners on the area of mobile application development usually rely on set of app-related success factors, the majority of which are directly related to their economical/business profit (e.g., number of downloads, or the in-app purchases revenue). However, gathering also the user-related success factors, that explain the reasons why users choose, download, and install apps as well as the user-related failure factors that explain the reasons why users delete apps, might help practitioners understand how to improve the market impact of their apps. The objectives were to: identify (i) the reasons why users choose and installing mobile apps from app stores;(ii) the reasons why users uninstall the apps. A questionnaire-based survey involving 121 users from 26 different countries was conducted.

Over the last years many data quality initiatives and suggestions report how to improve and sustain data quality. However, almost all data quality projects and suggestions focus on the assessment and one-time quality improvement, especially, suggestions rarely include how to sustain the continuous data quality improvement. Inspired by the work related to variability in supply chains, also known as the Bullwhip effect, this paper aims to suggest how to sustain data quality improvements and investigate the effects of delays in reporting data quality indicators. Furthermore, we propose that a data quality prediction model can be used as one of countermeasures to reduce the Data Quality Bullwhip Effect. Based on a real-world case study, this paper makes an attempt to show how to reduce this effect. Our results indicate that data quality success is a critical practice, and predicting data quality improvements can be used to decrease the variability of the data quality index in a long run.
