Nowadays, enterprise managers involved with decision-making processes struggle with numerous problems related to market position or business reputation of their companies. Owning the right and high quality set of information is a crucial factor for developing business activities and gaining competitive advantages on business arenas. However, today retrieving information is not enough anymore. The possibility to simulate hypothetical scenarios without harming the business using What-If analysis tools and to retrieve highly refined information is an interesting way for achieving such business advantages. In a previous work, we introduced a hybridization model that combines What-If analysis and OLAP usage preferences, which helps filter the information and meet the users' needs and business requirements without losing data quality. The main advantage is to provide the user with a way to overcome the difficulties that arise when dealing with the conventional What-If analysis scenario process. In this paper, we show an application of this methodology using a sample database, and compare the results of a conventional What-if process and our methodology. We designed and developed a specific piece of software, which aims to discover the best recommendations for What-If analysis scenarios' parameters using OLAP usage preferences, which incorporates user experience in the definition and analysis of a target decision-making scenario.

Monitoring systems targeting to improve decision making in emergency scenarios are currently benefiting from crowdsourcing information. The main issue with such kind of data is that the gathered reports quickly become too similar among themselves. Hence, too much similar reports, namely near-duplicates, do not add valuable knowledge to assist crisis control committees in their decision making tasks. The current approaches to detect near-duplicates are usually based on a twofold processing, where the first phase relies on similarity queries or clustering techniques, whereas the second and most computationally costly phase refines the result from the first one. Aimed at reducing that cost and also improving the ability of near-duplication detection, we developed a framework model based on the similarity wide-join database operator. This paper extends the wide-join definition empowering it to surpass its restrictions and provides an efficient algorithm based on pivots that speeds up the entire process, whereas enabling to retrieve the most similar elements in a single-pass. We also investigate alternatives and propose efficient algorithms to choose the pivots. Experiments using real datasets show that our framework is up to three orders of magnitude faster than the competing techniques in the literature, whereas it also improves the quality of the result in about 35%.

Big data provides new business opportunities. Companies can use big data to gain competitive advantage, and to make disruptive innovations. But also, data acquisition, transformation, integration, analysis and visualization can bring business opportunities. This paper looks at big data from a business perspective. Porter's value chain model is applied to big data, and is used as a framework to identify business opportunities. Some common revenue models from electronic commerce are presented and their applicability is discussed.

Studies have shown that the focus of business Process Management (BPM) mainly lies on process discovery and process implementation & execution. In contrast, process analysis, i.e., the measurement of process performance, has been mostly neglected in the field of process science so far. However, in order to be viable in the long run, a process' performance has to be made evaluable. To enable this kind of analysis, the suggested approach in this idea paper builds upon the well-established notion of devil's quadrangle. The quadrangle depicts the process performance according to four dimensions (time, cost, quality and flexibility), thus allowing for a meaningful assessment of the process. In the course of this paper, a framework for the measurement of each dimension is proposed, based on the analysis of process execution data. A trailing example is provided that reflects the expressed concepts on a tangible realistic scenario.

One of the most common dilemmas faced today by organizations and their leaders is how to guarantee value from the high level IT investments, i.e. how organizations ensure expected benefits from this growth in IT investments. A superior understanding of how to deliver value to the business from IT initiatives is critical. Value should not be view only as a financial return, but also as other strategic factors that affect the business. This paper adopts a resource-based theory perspective to identify and propose a set of competences, resources, and practices, which contribute to develop and conceptualize an IT Value Management Capability Model, with an oriented practical perspective to existing IT Value Management professional frameworks, namely;COBIT 5 and Val IT 2.0. Based on literature findings, our model supports managers on developing resources, practices, and competences that contribute to business value and competitive advantage.

Digital transformation has become a priority for any organization and Universities are not an exception. This paper deals with the digital transformation that is being undertaken at the University of Porto (U. Porto). In order to understand its major guidelines, it is important to clarify the term " digital transformation" and " digital business strategy", comparing these new concepts with prevailing views of aligning the business strategy with the IT strategy. A newly created Shared Services Center (UPSSC) is at the core of the digital business strategy of U. Porto. This endeavor triggered a profound university wide re- engineering, that was enabled by a new work management system, hereafter referred to as UPWMS. The discussion of the distinctive characteristics of this work management system and how it copes with the diversity and heterogeneity of the requests received by the Shared Services, is the main objective of the paper. A discussion of the main cornerstones of the project in the context of the digital transformation strategy finishes the paper.

business process design and governance are two important phases of business Process Management (BPM). They are however usually performed using tools that tend to be too generic and technical for most business analysts. For instance, they promote business Intelligence (BI) mechanisms to extract reports for the analysis of the executed processes, but they typically focus on one process definition at a time. This approach has shortcomings in organisations where there are large collections of processes that need to be managed consistently. In previous work, we proposed the generation of domain-specific studios, in order to enable analysts to design their processes in a much more intuitive way than with generic languages. This work is a logical continuation through the addition of domain-specific multi-process reporting and analysis. By defining analytics metrics in a domain-specific space, analysts are able to make business performance reviews and manage change in ways that apply directly and quickly to entire collections of process. The appropriateness and the feasibility of the approach are shown through a detailed use-case and a complete prototype implementation.

Service systems' capabilities to generate (positive or negative) externalities and their impact at the societal level has remained under-investigated so far. This study addresses this gap and explores how an innovative organizational architecture based on (i) a network of competent actors, (ii) an (ICT-enabled) platform serving as a network commons and (iii) a shared institutional logic and worldview enables the emergence and evolution of a service ecosystem with strong positive externalities. It was conducted an in-depth longitudinal study (2013-2016) on an ICT-enabled community of IT professionals, aimed to provide unemployed professionals with employment opportunities while also providing small and micro enterprises and non-profit organizations with affordable, high-level IT services. The case-study shows that the presence of non-profit organizations in the service ecosystem strongly influences the service ecosystem's institutional logic and worldview and facilitates sustainability-oriented self-organizing throughout the ecosystem.

Daily, a big data of media, thoughts and opinions can be noticed on Online Social Networks (OSN), resulting from their user's interaction and sharing of information. In Brazil, this is strongly observed, as Brazilians are often active on the Internet. The business and academic communities around the world are aware of these events, due their possibilities to improve social customer relationship management. Therefore, this work aims to show a performance comparison between algorithms for Sentiment Analysis (SA), in their Portuguese and English versions, with datasets composed of Brazilian Portuguese comments from OSN, and their translations. The results highlight the need for proposals in specific language and Social Media context, given the performance presented by Portuguese version methods.

Process modeling constitutes a fundamental task in the context of process-aware information systems. Besides process model creation, the reading and understanding of process models is of utmost importance. To better understand the latter, we have developed a conceptual framework focusing on the comprehension of business process models. By adopting concepts from cognitive neuroscience and psychology, the paper presents initial results from a series of eye tracking experiments on process model comprehension. The results indicate that experiences with process modeling have an influence on overall model comprehension. In turn, with increasing process model complexity, individuals with either no or advanced expertise in process modeling do not significantly differ with respect to process model comprehension. The results further indicate that both groups face similar challenges in reading and comprehending process models. The conceptual framework takes these results into account and provides the basis for the further experiments.
