Process mining enables multiple types of process analysis based on event data. In many scenarios, there are interesting subsets of cases that have deviations or that are delayed. Identifying such subsets and comparing process mining results is a key step in any process mining project. We aim to find the statistically most interesting patterns of a subset of cases. These subsets can be created by process mining algorithms features (e.g., conformance checking diagnostics) and serve as input for other process mining techniques. We apply subgroup discovery in the process mining domain to generate actionable insights like patterns in deviating cases. Our approach is supported by the ProM framework. For evaluation, an experiment has been conducted using event data from a large Spanish telecommunications company. The results indicate that using subgroup discovery, we could extract interesting insights that could only be found by spitting the event data in the right manner.

Waste Water Treatment Plants (WWTPs) are generally considered energy intensive. Substantial energy saving potentials have been identified by several authors. Pumps consume around 12% of the overall WWTP energy consumption. In this paper we propose a methodology that uses the sensors commonly installed in WWTPs, such as volume and energy sensors, to perform energy benchmarking on pumps. The relationship between energy efficiency and flow rate is used to detect specific problems, and potential solutions are proposed, taking into consideration economical and environmental criteria ( cost of externalities in energy production). The methodology integrates energy benchmarking, data-mining, and economical and environmental assessment. In order to make better informed decisions, plant managers can now perform a multivariate analysis within a very short time, using information generally available in WWTPs.

Crowdsourcing is an online activity in which an individual, an institution, a non-profit organization, or company proposes to a group of individuals of varying knowledge, heterogeneity, and number, via a flexible open call, the voluntary undertaking of a task. Crowdsourcing has been traditionally considered suitable to provide different types of support to the decision making process, especially in the design phase, through idea generation and co-creation, in the choice phase, through voting, as well as in the intelligence phase to explore or exploit information about the issue to be investigated. This article aims to investigate how to perform scenario planning by exploring ways to use crowdsourcing as a complement to two standard techniques for idea generation and selection: (a) brainstorming and (b) the Delphi method. Then, we question the cost and the effectiveness of combining these methods, and crowdsourcing to perform scenario planning for policy making. To this end, in this article we propose a model to assess the cost and effectiveness of the intersection between crowd and experts in decision-making activities, with a focus on scenario planning, choosing a public sector research site for its evaluation.

information system developers have to cope with a continually changing technological landscape. Knowing what each kind of technique or technology can do and how well they perform under various conditions constitute an important kind of know-how that systems professionals seek. In this paper, we claim that such know-how information can be structured as a map, so as to facilitate understanding and decision making about what technology to adopt or develop. Recent work has proposed to use a goal-oriented approach to address the challenge of constructing such a map. In this paper, we examine the hypothesis that a goal-oriented approach can be used for mapping and analyzing technological domains. First, we apply the approach to several domains, to verify the applicability and expressiveness of the approach. Second, we perform a feature-based analysis and examine the extent to which the approach addresses the desired characteristics of a know-how map. Third, we conduct a controlled experiment in which the comprehension of goal-oriented know-how maps in comparison to a textual summary from a literature review was examined. The evaluation results indicate that the goal-oriented know-how maps have sufficient expressiveness, are easy to read and understand, and address a number of desired characteristics.

Security is an important non-functional characteristic of the business processes used by organisations for the coordination of their activities. Nevertheless, the implementation of security at the operational level can be challenging due to the limited security expertise of process designers and the delayed consideration of security during process development. To overcome such issues, expert knowledge and proven security solutions can be captured in the form of process patterns, which can easily be reused and integrated to business processes with minimal security-related knowledge required. In this work we introduce process-level security patterns, each of which contains the main activities required for the operationalisation of different security requirements. The introduced patterns are then used as a component of an existing framework for the creation of secure business process designs, the application of which, is illustrated through a working example. A preliminary evaluation of the proposed patterns is conducted via a workshop session.

Event data or traces of activities often exhibit unexpected behavior and complex relations. Thus, before and during the application of automated analysis methods, such as process mining algorithms, the analyst needs to investigate and understand the data at hand in order to decide which analysis methods might be appropriate. Visual analytics integrates the outstanding capabilities of humans in terms of visual information exploration with the enormous processing power of computers to form a powerful knowledge discovery environment. The combination of visual data exploration with process mining algorithms makes complex information structures more comprehensible and facilitates new insights. In this position paper I portray various concepts of interactive visual support for process mining, focusing on the challenges, but also the great opportunities for analyzing process data with visual analytics methods.

business and IT-alignment (BITA) is a continuous process aiming at aligning strategic and operational objectives and ways to implement them between the business divisions of an organization and its information technology. The work presented in this paper focuses on a specific aspect of BITA: the process of creating an alignment between stakeholders in an organization and the IT. In a project aiming at the implementation of lifelong learning services, experiences were collected supporting a two stage BITA process. The organizational objective of the project was to offer tailor-made learning possibilities at university level to new, non-traditional target groups. New study formats allow to start studying at any stage of life and offer appropriate IT support for new target groups and study formats. The central technological idea consists in a context-oriented, information technology portal for e-learning, the MyKOSMOS portal, with an individualized and demand-based supply of information for the learners.

Context: In Canada, the justice system suffers from performance and efficiency issues as indicated by long wait time before trial. Actors in the justice system are seeking solutions involving emerging information technology. Problem: There is need to guide the selection of appropriate combinations of technologies supporting or improving justice systems, yet there is no adapted approach focusing on this concern. Objective: This paper aims to develop the basis of a modeling approach supporting the selection of technologies relevant to justice systems. Method: Goal-oriented requirements modeling is used to describe and evaluate the contribution of technology in the context of justice systems, with the help of an illustrative example targeting the improvement of access to justice. Results: The example shows that it is feasible to model the technology alternatives and their contributions to the goals of different stakeholders in justice systems so that selected technologies are well-aligned with the needs of such systems. Goal models also support trade-off analysis in this context. Conclusion: A justice-aware modeling approach has the potential of helping justice stakeholders to better reason about technology selection and document the rationale of their choices. There are however many remaining challenges in the generalization of the approach to other cases and in its validation in practice.

Industry 4.0 has received much attention in recent years, in parallel due to an increasing number of mergers and acquisitions (M&As), post merger integrations (PMI) is of continuous interest. Depending on the integration approach, process harmonization is vital during the PMI. The objective of this article is to observe the significance of Quality 4.0 during process harmonization and detect the extent of realization of this vision in service companies. A systematic literature review and empirical research with expert interviews have been executed. The research showed that Industry 4.0 is still a topic of enormous interest although there seems to be a gap between scientific publications and knowledge in practice. Especially towards Quality 4.0 and service companies future research is needed. In none of the service organizations are any intrinsic endeavors for implementing Industry 4.0 elements (e.g. ERP systems). A massive elucidation and information about Industry 4.0 in practice is demanded. Downstream markets could profit immense from the accompanied potential.

Many electronic services are not used in isolation, but in the context of a specific user. This user, customer or patient perspective is different from the perspective of service providers since customer processes usually involve multiple service providers. information on the context helps to understand these user needs and to improve the coordination among services. This research in progress paper examines existing contributions as a basis towards an understanding of the concept and modeling of "context" from a context provider's perspective and proposes a preliminary model, which also serves to analyze four use cases. The paper summarizes challenges observed in these cases and presents an agenda for further research.
