Dynamic changes on of the business environment force business experts to continuously monitor and analyze situation and relations on the market. Due to the volume of available data and huge number of entities that operates on most markets, it is very time and cost consuming to perform the analysis manually. The paper presents an outline of analysis method that focus on identification on business networks and analysis of business environment of the specific business entity. The method operates on a set of semantically described profiles that are automatically processed and analyzed according the to user's criteria.

The daily stand-up meeting is a widely used practice. However, what is more uncertain is how valuable the practice is to team members. We invited professional developers of a programming forum to a survey and obtained 221 responses. Results show that the daily stand-up meeting was used by 87% of those who employ agile methods. We found that even though the respondents on average were neutral towards the practice, the majority were either positive or negative. Junior developers were most positive and senior developers and members of large teams most negative. We argue that the value of the practice should be evaluated according to the team needs. Further, more work is needed to understand why senior developers do not perceive the meetings as valuable and how to apply the practice successfully in large teams.

Cloud service selection is a complex process that requires assessment of not only individual features of a cloud service but also its ability to interoperate with an ecosystem of cloud services. In this position paper, we address the problem by devising metrics to measure the impact of interoperability among the cloud services to guide the cloud service selection process. We introduce concrete definitions and metrics to contribute to measuring the level of interoperability between cloud services. We also demonstrate a methodology to evaluate the metrics via a use case example. Our contributions prove that the proposed metrics cover critical aspects related to interoperability in multi-cloud arena and therefore form a robust baseline to compare cloud services in systematic decision making environments.

Since the publication of 'The machine that changed the world', lean has spread in academic and management literature. In this case we study the lean transition of one process in a Belgian financial institution by means of Enterprise Engineering (EE) concepts and methods. Enterprise Ontology (EO) and Normalized Systems (NS) are used. Additionally, business Process Modeling Notation (BPMN) is used to describe process implementations in more detail. In the case the role of each of these methods is discussed, as well as their weaknesses and advantages. However, it does not propose an explicit integration of different theories. Based on our results and in line with calls from previous research we highlight the contributions of EE tools for lean implementation.

In this article we propose a safest path route choice algorithm which determines the safest path directions for pedestrians in case of fire. We also propose an escape route system for emergency evacuation management. The model and the algorithms are implemented in an open source framework (JuPedSim) which is a research platform to simulate pedestrian dynamics. The proposed algorithm allows the even distribution of the evacuees to all available emergency exits. We simulate the evacuation of a shopping centre and show that the application of the algorithm can reduce the total evacuation time up to 63% depending on the settings of the algorithm. Based on those results we elaborate an escape route system for emergency evacuation. The system includes three modules and can be operated in several modes. The designed system allow not only significantly to reduce the evacuation time but also to ensure people's safety during evacuation.

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems pose usability challenges to all but the most sophisticated of users. One challenge arises from complex menu structures that hinder system navigation. Another issue is the lack of support for discovering and exploring relationships between the data elements that underlie transactions performed with the system. We describe two dynamic, interactive visualizations, the Dynamic Task Map and the Association Map, which were designed to assist users in ERP system navigation and data exploration activities. We present two laboratory studies comparing the use of these visual components to SAP interfaces. Results from an initial empirical evaluation revealed performance gains when using the visual components compared to the default SAP interface. A follow-up study showed users' overall preference for the visual interface, although no significant user performance differences were detected. User-reported mental effort associated with the visual interface was lower compared to the SAP table-based presentation.

Service business models expose industrial service providers to an increasing amount of uncertainties. In order to design profitable offerings, providers need to understand how uncertainties affect contract profitability. Both, access to data and algorithms are key requirements for accurate analyses. While current research focuses on developing algorithms to derive insights from data that already exist, the need for strategically acquiring relevant data sets has been neglected so far. In this article, we develop a method for defining data acquisition strategies to improve uncertainty analyses for industrial service contracting. We explain how lacking observations, variables and quality of data affect uncertainty analyses, propose data acquisition strategies as a systematic plan to acquire relevant data and develop an approach for ranking acquisition strategies by measuring their acquisition effort and business benefit. The method is applied in an industrial use case to demonstrate its benefit for assessing cost uncertainties in full-service repair contracts.

Social media websites have managed in a very short period of time to attract and maintain a massive user. Recognizing their potential, the vast majority of companies are deploying strategies in order to harness their potential in various ways, and ultimately, to establish their competitive position. Nonetheless, being relevantly novel, it still remains unclear as to how it is possible to make the most out of social media, especially in competitive and highly dynamic environments. As with any new technology, it is important to understand the mechanisms and processes through which social media can be of business value for companies in order to incorporate them into their competitive strategies. To this end, the present paper aims to provide a theoretical discussion leading up to a conceptual research framework that can help explain the mechanisms through which social media and analytics lead to competitive performance gains. The conceptual research framework builds on the resource-based view (RBV) and dynamic capabilities view (DCV) of the firm, and provides a synthesis of the two theoretical perspectives.

With the increasing adoption of Web services, designing novel approaches for recommending relevant Web services has become of paramount importance especially to support many practical applications such as Web services composition. In this paper, a survey aiming at encompassing the state-of-the-art of interactive Web services composition recommendation approaches is presented. Both Web services composition and recommender systems concepts are introduced and their particular challenges are also discussed. Moreover, the need of using recommendation techniques to support Web services composition is also highlighted. The most relevant approaches dedicated to address this need are presented, categorized and compared.
