Alignment between business and information systems plays a vital role in the formation of dependent relationships between different departments in a government organization and the process of alignment can be improved by developing an information system (IS) according to the stakeholders' expectations. However, establishing strong alignment in the context of the eGovernment environment can be difficult. It is widely accepted that business processes in the government environment plays a pivotal role in capturing the details of IS requirements. This paper presents a method of business process modelling through UML which can help to visualise and capture the IS requirements for the system development. A series of UML models have been developed and discussed. A case study on patient visits to a healthcare clinic in the context of eGovernment has been used to validate the models.

Genres of communications significantly influence the evolution of a field of research. In the information Systems (IS) domain, a debate has recently emerged on the chance to implement alternative genres in the representation of IS publication and practice. We hence propose to apply story-telling and narrative as alternative genres to write publications reporting IS research. By presenting a narration exemplifying the implementation of these genres, we argue that the incremental introduction of their principles would be beneficial to IS research, enabling a revisited representation of IS themes that extends the boundaries of canonical genres. In parallel, thanks to the peculiarity of the story narrated, we claim that story-telling and narrative are also powerful instruments supporting IS practice. The mediating role of action research in enhancing the link between story-telling and narrative used as writing genres and practices will also be recognized.

The increasing number of smart appliances equipped with sensors, actuators and tags connected to the Internet and their ability to communicate with one another forms the basis for an Internet of Things (IoT). The data recorded by smart appliances can be utilized to detect energy savings potential and to increase energy efficiency in households. Despite these possibilities, value-added services which successfully incentivize customers to save energy are missing or are still immature. In this paper, we propose a solution for a smart energy platform that aims at reducing this gap by providing the infrastructure and tools which enable the integration of smart appliances and the development of value-added services for an automated energy management in households. In this context, we give an overview of the main challenges for IoT platforms in general and show that existing solutions currently do not fully meet them.

Value creation with data science methodologies generates important insights. However, these insights do not systematically provide service value to customers. Therefore, we show a systematic approach to use data science for the process of service design. We develop a structure of data science methodologies in the dimensions of their potential to create service benefit. This enables the mapping of the value contribution of the data science tools on the different perspectives and phases of the service design process. Based on this mapping, a direct link can be established between the outcomes of the data science methodologies and the value drivers for the customer. The resulting new methodology allows the systematic value creation from insights generated by data science.

There has been significant growth in the number of business intelligence platforms that support and execute business rules since the late 1990s that shows no signs of abating. This paper examines the question of how to optimize business rules that can support rather than replace the human decision maker. It presents a novel framework to combine data (including decisions and actual outcomes), a business rules engine and the human judge. Preliminary results, on real data, suggest that about 80% of cases could be determined by a rules engine with an overall increase in gross profit of about 2%.

The aim of this paper is to present and discuss opinions of the librarians on the role of public libraries as intermediaries in access to public information and services in Poland. The assumption is that Polish public libraries, following the example of United States and United Kingdom, could fulfill the role of intermediaries in access to e-government, empowering citizens and promoting e-inclusion. The data collection was executed through an online survey, which was subjected to libraries in three voivodeships.

Digitization transforms business process models and processes in many enterprises. However, many of them need guidance, how digitization is impacting the design of their information systems. Therefore, this paper investigates the influence of digitization on information system design. We apply a two-phase research method applying a literature review and an exploratory case study. The case study took place in the IT service provider of a large insurance enterprise. The study's results suggest that a number of areas of information system design are affected, such as architecture, processes, data and services.

Task allocation is considered an important activity in software project management. However, the process of allocating tasks in agile software development teams has not received much attention in empirical research. Through a pilot study involving mixed open-ended and closed-ended interviews questions with 11 agile software practitioners working within a software development organization in India, we explain the process of task allocation as including three different mechanisms of workflow across teams: team-independent, team-dependent, and hybrid workflow;and five types of task allocation strategies: manager-driven, team-driven, individual-driven, manager-assisted and team-assisted. Knowing these workflow mechanisms and task allocation strategies will help software teams and project managers make more effective decisions around workflow and task allocation.

This research-in-progress paper proposes the need for a move towards more meaningful variability of visual notations. Evidence accumulated via an online survey on the requirements practitioners have for visual notations, indicate the need for variability of a modeling language's visual notation. Widely used modeling languages in practice such as UML and BPMN do not support redesign of the visual notation of core constructs without modifying or extending the underlying abstract syntax and semantics (e.g., UML stereotypes, BPMN extensions). The expressed need to vary commonly used visual notations depending on particular users or contexts, while not changing the underlying modeling language itself, poses a set of research challenges discussed here.

In times of dynamic markets, enterprises have to be agile to be able to quickly react to market influences. Due to the increasing digitization of products, the enterprise IT often is affected when business models change. Enterprise Architecture Management (EAM) targets a holistic view of the enterprise' IT and their relations to the business. However, Enterprise Architectures (EA) are complex structures consisting of many layers, artifacts and relationships between them. Thus, analyzing EA is a very complex task for stakeholders. Visualizations are common vehicles to support analysis. However, in practice visualization capabilities lack flexibility and interactivity. A solution to improve the support of stakeholders in analyzing EAs might be the application of visual analytics. Starting from a systematic literature review, this article investigates the features of visual analytics relevant for the context of EAM.
