Process mining is concerned with extracting knowledge about business processes based on digital traces left during their execution. Most existing process mining methods are focused on stable processes. However, processes tend to change over time in response to changing regulations or market conditions but also due to internal dynamics. Concept drift is a phenomenon in process mining when a process changes during the timeframe when it is analyzed. Following the change in how a process is executed, process complexity also changes over time. Despite this apparent connection, the relationship between these concepts have not been explicitly studied. In this paper, some theoretical considerations on how concept drift can be reflected in process complexity are presented. These considerations are then evaluated using artificial and real-life event logs. The results support the considerations and invite a multitude of questions for future research.

Event logs play a fundamental role in enabling data-driven business process analysis. Traditionally, these logs track events related to a single object, known as the case, limiting the scope of analysis. Recent advancements, such as Object-Centric Event Log (OCEL) and Event Knowledge Graph (EKG), capture better how events relate to multiple objects. However, attributes of objects can change over time, which was not initially considered in OCEL or EKG. While OCEL 2.0 has addressed some of these limitations, there remains a research gap concerning how attribute changes should be accommodated in EKG and how OCEL 2.0 logs can be transformed into EKG. This paper fills this gap by introducing Temporal Event Knowledge Graph (tEKG) and defining an algorithm to convert an OCEL 2.0 log to a tEKG.

Resource analysis is an emerging branch in process mining that aims to understand behavioral and structural aspects of resources in business processes. A problem of current resource analysis is its fragmentation. The spectrum of corresponding process mining techniques is diverse but scattered, with contributions often focusing on one or the other specific aspects. An overarching framework that could organize resource analysis, tie it to theoretical foundations, and, in turn, inform the development of new analytical methods is missing. In this work, we address this research problem by conducting a systematic literature review to organize the scattered landscape of the state-of-the-art resource analysis methods in process mining. Our work is guided by the question of what resource-related organizational and behavioral patterns can be analyzed with current methods. We classify the methods according to two aspects: what type of phenomenon was analyzed and what design principles were utilized in the development. Our findings highlight that most resource analysis methods in process mining are data-driven, developed to solve a specific business problem, or loosely based on resource analysis concepts from other disciplines. Some good examples of techniques defined for theoretical questions give directions for future research.

This paper investigates the vision capabilities of multimodal Generative Pre-trained Transformers (GPTs) to auto-generate structured process models from diagram- and text-based documents. We introduce a dataset of 123 process models and corresponding documentation, emphasizing real-world element distributions. Using evaluation metrics for process model similarity, this enables ground truth-based assessment of process model generation. We evaluate commercial GPT capabilities with zero-, one-, and few-shot prompting strategies. Our results indicate that generative vision models can be useful tools for semi-automated process modeling based on multimodal documents. More importantly, the dataset and evaluation metrics as well as the open-source evaluation code provide a structured framework for continued systematic evaluations moving forward.

The present study aims to develop a reference model that integrates Digital Twins (DTs) and business Process Management (BPM) to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of clinical trials. To achieve this, a five-step method was employed: (1) a collaborative workshop with Clinical Research Center (CRC) managers, scientists, and principal investigators (PIs);(2) validation of stakeholder needs;(3) conceptualization of a DT use case;(4) development of a synergetic reference model;and (5) evaluation of this model with a clinical research specialist. The results identified key business needs from various stakeholders, proposed a DT solution to address these needs, and created a reference model that integrates BPM and DT perspectives. This integrated approach addresses challenges such as ensuring continuous and interoperable data capture, motivating systematic data collection, and facilitating data transfer between CRCs, thus improving stakeholder satisfaction in clinical trials. The developed reference model and the identified research challenges provide a foundation for future research and practical implementation of DTs and BPM in clinical trials. This study advances the field by bridging DT and BPM frameworks, offering a comprehensive approach to managing clinical trial processes, and demonstrating the significant potential of these technologies to improve clinical research efficiency and effectiveness.

Event abstraction enables transformation of low level events into higher level events making process mining (PM) on sensor data available. There are many approaches to event abstraction described in literature, however the main approaches include supervised or unsupervised techniques. We address the challenge of transforming low-level sensor data into high-level activities required for effective process mining, a task traditionally reliant on domain experts. By leveraging LLMs to automate the labelling process of sensor data clusters, we bridge the gap between raw data and process models. Motivated by a mining industry use case, we validated the effectiveness of LLMs in accurately labelling operational phases. Our LLM-generated labelling rules demonstrated high accuracy and interpretability, simplifying the understanding for domain experts. Additionally, we compared our LLM-based approach with a Decision Tree Classifier, highlighting the advantages of LLMs in generating simpler, more understandable labelling functions. Our work underscores the potential of advanced AI techniques to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of PM, contributing to the Industry 4.0 initiative.

In order to support capability management, the field of Enterprise Architecture proposes methods and notations to model enterprises and their capabilities. ArchiMate is one of such notations and includes constructs to support capability mapping and other capability management tasks. However, the notation lacks some fine-grained distinctions that are required to understand intricate phenomena involving capabilities, including capability interaction and the emergence of capabilities. In this work, we perform an ontological analysis of the language's support for capability modeling based on a well-founded ontology of capabilities aligned with the Unified Foundational Ontology (UFO). Through this ontological analysis, we identify some issues outlining possible improvements for ArchiMate. This is a first step towards language redesign, which may include the proposal of language patterns and/or the revision of language constructs.

Despite their considerable dissemination, existing UML modeling tools suffer from significant limitations that stand in the way of their profitable use in practice as well as in teaching. This paper presents a new UML modeling tool, called UML-MX (c), that overcomes these limitations. It is based on a language architecture that not only enables the integration of class and object diagrams, but also the execution of objects in the diagram editor. Thus, it promotes a more inspiring learning experience. At the same time, it goes beyond the limitations of traditional approaches to model-driven software development by enabling a common representation of models and programs.

Software architecture plays an important role in the development of modern, complex software systems as it influences a system's quality attributes and ability to grow with future demand. Designing the software architecture of cyber-physical systems (CPS) becomes even more challenging due to their capability of directly influencing the physical world and thus introducing new non-functional requirements related to fault-tolerance, safety, and resource scarcity. Existing research focuses on systems engineering to achieve the vertical integration of CPS with an organization's information systems and processes, but not on software architecture to horizontally extend existing systems with new CPS. In this report we describe the process of revising an existing monolithic software architecture for a smart factory towards a microservices-based architecture to meet these new requirements and prepare the factory to be extended with new CPS. For the revision of the existing architecture, we provide an analysis of its code base before and after changes, a description of the refactoring process, and discuss relevant new non-functional requirements and architecture options. We elaborate on the architectural decisions favoring microservices and analyze the new architecture regarding improved quality attributes to evaluate the system.

There is an increasing potential for using AI applications in finance, ranging from simpler Generative AI applications to more complex, agent oriented solutions. This paper reports on our experience in applying early AI solutions in an Australian fintech landscape. We first present a framework developed to support industry experts and practitioners in adopting AI solutions in a scaleable manner, to ensure the adoption of fit-for-purpose AI systems. We then focus on a longer term research dimension, which addresses more complex business problems for which the emerging multi-agent AI technologies may offer more value. We experimented with these technologies, including their integration with more mature approaches such as RAG. Our proof of concept for retirement planning application, highlights benefits and directions for LLM-powered AI agents, and also identifies limitations of current technologies. Specifically, deploying multi-agent technologies on low-powered infrastructure presents challenges. These limitations can hinder the implementation of solutions that require reliable reasoning and collaboration. Our proof of concept highlights both the potential of multi-agent technologies, and the limitations that need to be addressed.
