Big Data analysis emerges as an innovative technology capable of providing solutions to complex problems of global concern, including prevention from natural disasters. In this study, we illustrate the contribution of Big Data technology for wildfire prevention. We describe the development of a web application that combines wildfire behavior simulations with Big Data analysis for alerting and notifying end users in case of a fire emergency. The article aims to contribute in highlighting the role of the Big Data for wildfire prevention, with a view, under certain conditions, to reduce the human, environmental and socio-economic losses that are caused.

In the past two decades, the development of payment solutions has significantly changed the way online retail businesses are conducted and enlarged the scope of numerous payment technologies offered in the market. Despite the multitude of payment solutions, card-based systems are still the most prevalent. While secure, card-based systems still lack privacy protection, user control and supervision. In this paper, we propose a new e-payment framework relying on card-based payment systems, with the aggregation of virtual credit cards and a personalized conditional E-Payment Plan defined by the cardholder. In our framework, the cardholder's privacy is ensured with the use of Virtual Credit Cards. Moreover, with the E-Payment Plan Service Manager (E-PPSM), our proposed framework brings considerable improvements to the shopping practice. Through this service, cardholders can efficiently control and supervise their online purchases. The proposed framework thus ensures three considerable concentrations: personalization, control, and supervision applicable in multi-purchase checkouts, which are, in addition to privacy protection, our main contributions.

Process model matching techniques aim at automatically identifying activity correspondences between two process models that represent the same or similar behavior. By doing so, they provide essential input for many advanced process model analysis techniques such as process model search. Despite their importance, the performance of process model matching techniques is not yet convincing and several attempts to improve the performance have not been successful. This raises the question of whether it is really not possible to further improve the performance of process model matching techniques. In this paper, we aim to answer this question by conducting two consecutive analyses. First, we review existing process model matching techniques and give an overview of the specific technologies they use to identify similar activities. Second, we analyze the correspondences of the Process Model Matching Contest 2015 and reflect on the suitability of the identified technologies to identify the missing correspondences. As a result of these analyses, we present a list of three specific recommendations to improve the performance of process model matching techniques in the future.

To address current challenges in the management of energy grids, Demand-Side-Management (DSM) is one possibility. In this field various approaches exist but consider often different constraints regarding appliances. This paper aims at identifying these constraints through a triangulation: we conducted two literature reviews and several expert interviews simultaneously to derive a taxonomy of (DSM) load constraints. This taxonomy grows during the research process and contains at the end five constraints, a short description, examples of appliances for each constraint and a mathematical representation. This taxonomy can be used for future research, e.g. for designing, evaluating or benchmarking DSM-Methods.

Finding out which e-shops offer a specific product is a central challenge for building integrated product catalogs and comparison shopping portals. Determining whether two offers refer to the same product involves extracting a set of features (product attributes) from the web pages containing the offers and comparing these features using a matching function. The existing gold standards for product matching have two shortcomings: (i) they only contain offers from a small number of e-shops and thus do not properly cover the heterogeneity that is found on the Web. (ii) they only provide a small number of generic product attributes and therefore cannot be used to evaluate whether detailed product attributes have been correctly extracted from textual product descriptions. To overcome these shortcomings, we have created two public gold standards: The WDC Product Feature Extraction Gold Standard consists of over 500 product web pages originating from 32 different websites on which we have annotated all product attributes (338 distinct attributes) which appear in product titles, product descriptions, as well as tables and lists. The WDC Product Matching Gold Standard consists of over 75 000 correspondences between 150 products (mobile phones, TVs, and headphones) in a central catalog and offers for these products on the 32 web sites. To verify that the gold standards are challenging enough, we ran several baseline feature extraction and matching methods, resulting in F-score values in the range 0.39 to 0.67. In addition to the gold standards, we also provide a corpus consisting of 13 million product pages from the same websites which might be useful as background knowledge for training feature extraction and matching methods.

This paper presents the initial design of a method to value smart grid (SG) architectures from a business point of view. The proposed design relies on the use of the Smart Grid Architecture Model (SGAM) and an adapted version of Bedell's method to assess the strategic importance and effectiveness of SG elements. As an attempt to automate such valuation, we also propose the use of a survey and a decision support system (DSS) that can determine the overall value of SG architectures.

In our era of the service industry, information systems play a major place, even a vital position for businesses, organizations and individuals. information systems are facing new ongoing security threats, more sophisticated and of different natures. In this context, it is important to prevent attackers from achieving their outcomes, manage the inevitable breaches, and minimize their impacts. Security practices must be conducted in an engineering framework;engineering of security has to be improved. For this, it is proposed to develop innovative and broad systemic approaches that operate together on several axes, by improving user experience. We track and solve Resilience, Security and Usability issues jointly in enterprise information systems. In this paper, we position socio-technical systems according to well-known information systems of enterprises and organizations. We treat the paradigms of socio-technical systems and we focus on the interplay between resilience, security and usability. A case study illustrates the proposed approach;it details the elaboration of design patterns for improving user experience.

Although task interdependence is regarded as a key factor in determining individual performance, empirical evidence on the relation between interdependence and project performance is limited. This work investigates how task interdependence influences project performance. Specifically, we empirically examine the relationship between task interdependence, teamwork quality, and project management performance using a questionnaire survey of 300 software personnel. The analysis results show the mediating effects of different aspects of teamwork quality on the relationship between task interdependence and project performance. Therefore, when assigning tasks with high interdependence for an agile process, managers shall provide team members the platform for facilitating their teamwork behaviors.

information technology and systems always had an important role in organizations and presented a competitive advantage if properly used. However, in the last few years the technological progress and new business models seems to be escalating. Companies are challenged with changes in consumer behavior, emergence of new organizations with digital business models. Although public administration is treated as an area of having no competition, and it would be anticipated that these challenges are less relevant, the external environment is also forcing it into changes. These changes are seen through the increasing number of digitalized services, emphasizing the importance of bringing e-Government towards the people etc. However, it is often overlooked that digitization is not only about the technology itself, but it should include the business process management perspective as well. The purpose of this research is thus to present important concepts related to e-Government and demonstrate its efficiency through the micro company perspective.

We present a longitudinal project using action design research, which is a four-year collaboration between two EPFL entities: The research Laboratory for Systemic Modeling (LAMS) and EPFL's IT department, called the VPSI. During that time the VPSI was going through a transformation into a service-oriented organization. The research project began as an open-ended modeling of some of the VPSI processes. It slowly matured into the design and development of a visualization tool we call service cartography. During this research, we learned that, to successfully apply service-orientation, focusing purely on IT architecture and end-customer value is not enough. Attention must be given to the exchange of internal services between the service organization members and their alignment with the services expected by the external stakeholders. In this paper we present the evolution of (1) our understanding of what services are, and (2) our conceptualization of how the service cartography facilitates the service-oriented thinking.
