The paper presents the initial results of a controlled experiment that we conducted with professional database designers in order to evaluate an approach to automated design of the initial conceptual database model based on collaborative business process models. The source business process model is represented by BPMN, while the target conceptual model is represented by UML class diagram. The preliminary results confirm already obtained results in case-study based evaluation, as well as the results of an earlier controlled experiment conducted with undergraduate students. The evaluation implies that the proposed approach and implemented automatic generator enable the generation of the target conceptual model with a high percentage of completeness and precision.

Evolving the architecture of the software together with the evolution of the design is one of the key areas in maintaining the high quality. In this paper we present a portfolio of indicators addressing a set of three areas of information needs for large software development companies of embedded software. The portfolio is a result of our studies of literature and at Software Center (nine companies and five universities) with the goal to identify the main information needs and quality metrics for the role of software architects. As a result of our studies we could elicit such information needs as architecture measures, design stability, and technical debt/risk. Nine information needs with one corresponding indicator each fulfill these information needs were identified in literature and through the interviews and workshops with the practitioners.

The amount of data created in various sources over the Web is tremendously increasing. Trying to keep track of relevant sources is an increasingly time-consuming task. The traditional way of accessing information over the Web is pull-based. Users need to query data sources in certain time intervals where an important piece of information can be lately recognized or even missed completely. Technologies including RSS help users to get push-based notifications from websites. Discovering the relevant information without a notification overload is still not possible with existing technologies. Despite some promising efforts in push-based architectures to solve this problem, they fall short to meet the requirements in the big data era. In this study, by leveraging the latest advancements in distributed computing and big data analytics technologies, we use a focused crawling approach to propose a context aware notification architecture for people to find desired information at its most valuable state.

Context-awareness is a well-accepted approach to adapt applications to the needs of a user. Yet, it is hardly used in enterprise information systems, especially in production environments. Production environments are complex due to multi-faced actors, products, manufacturing equipment and processes. Hence, the modeling of context is sophisticated, particularly to determine relevant context. The goal of this paper is to facilitate and support context modeling in production environments. Our contribution is an analysis method for conceptual context modeling suited for Industry 4.0 and an extensible engineering context model as starting point for modeling of different Industry 4.0 use cases. The analysis model consists of a graphical notation for a simplified and abstract context model and a template-based concept to detail the model. Furthermore, we evaluate the approach by modeling a real use case from the car manufacturing industry.

As traditional search engines based on the text content often fail to efficiently display the products that the customers really desire, web companies commonly resort to reranking techniques in order to improve the products' relevance given a user query. For that matter, one may take advantage of fine-grained past user events it is now feasible to collect and process, such as the clicks, add-to-basket or purchases. We use a real-world data set of such events collected over a five-month period on a leading e-commerce company in order to benchmark reranking algorithms. A simple strategy consists in reordering products according to the clicks they gather. We also propose a more sophisticated method, based on an autoregressive model to predict the number of purchases from past events. Since we work with retail data, we assert that the most relevant and objective performance metric is the percent revenue generated by the top reranked products, rather than subjective criteria based on relevance scores assigned manually. By evaluating in this way the algorithms against our database of purchase events, we find that the top four products displayed by a state-of-the-art search engine capture on average about 25% of the revenue;reordering products according to the clicks they gather increases this percentage to about 48%;the autoregressive method reaches approximately 55%. An analysis of the coefficients of the autoregressive model shows that the past user events lose most of their predicting power after 2-3 days.

The design thinking approach which shapes the design culture of many organizations today, focuses on users' experiences, particularly their emotional ones, and strives to develop smart technologies and other complex systems and make them simple, intuitive and pleasurable. During design thinking processes, development teams are required to build empathy with users, observe their behavior and conclude and describe what they want and need, by using emotional language such as desire, love and aspire. Moreover, emotional attributes and notations are inserted into current modeling languages for expressing emotional goals and motivations for realizing users' perceptions of systems. For fostering design thinking capabilities, universities offer multidisciplinary learning opportunities where engineers and designers learn and practice together design thinking in development processes. In this regard, Shenkar, College of Engineering, Design and Art, provides students with several multidisciplinary learning opportunities in courses and workshops. This paper reports on these opportunities and brings insights and recommendations for enhancing the next multidisciplinary teaching events. The recommendations draw on the current body of literature in the areas of design thinking approach, agile framework and creativity, and address: defining open challenges that appeal to each discipline;handling teams' working process and responsibilities;and outlining expected solution that encompasses multidisciplinary capabilities.

This paper proposes an application of the Flexible Interactive Tradeoff (FITradeoff) method for siting healthcare facilities. The selection of the location of complex facilities, as hospitals, can be considered as a multidimensional decision problem for the several issues to be taken into account and, moreover, for the variety of stakeholders that should be involved. The case study under investigation is the location of "La Citta della Salute", a new large healthcare facility in Lombardy Region (Italy). Starting from a cross disciplinary literature review, a multidimensional evaluation framework has been defined and applied to the case study by considering the point of view of one Decision Maker (DM). The application shows that a smaller effort is required from the DM using the FITradeoff method.

business process models are intensively used in organizations with various persons being involved in their creation. One of the challenges is the usage of a consistent terminology to label the activities of these process models. To support this task, prior research has proposed quality metrics to support the usage of consistent terms, mainly based on linguistic relations such as synonymy or homonymy. In this paper, we propose a new approach that utilizes hypernym hierarchies. We use these hierarchies to define a measure of abstractness which helps users to align the level of detail within one process model. Moreover, we define two techniques to detect specific terminology defects, namely process hierarchy defects and object hierarchy defects, and give recommendations to align them with hypernym hierarchies. We evaluate our approach on three process model collections from practice.

Context: Eliciting requirements from customers is a complex task. In Agile processes, the customer talks directly with the development team and often reports requirements in an unstructured way. The requirements elicitation process is up to the developers, who split it into user stories by means of different techniques. Objective: We aim to compare the requirements decomposition process of an unstructured process and three Agile processes, namely XP, Scrum, and Scrum with Kanban. Method: We conducted a multiple case study with a replication design, based on the project idea of an entrepreneur, a designer with no experience in software development. Four teams developed the project independently, using four different development processes. The requirements were elicited by the teams from the entrepreneur, who acted as product owner and was available to talk with the four groups during the project. Results: The teams decomposed the requirements using different techniques, based on the selected development process. Conclusion: Scrum with Kanban and XP resulted in the most effective processes from different points of view. Unexpectedly, decomposition techniques commonly adopted in traditional processes are still used in Agile processes, which may reduce project agility and performance. Therefore, we believe that decomposition techniques need to be addressed to a greater extent, both from the practitioners' and the research points of view.
