Digital transformation can be seen as the mutual reinforcement of process redesign and innovative use of IT. The literature on digital transformation focuses on digital business strategy and the transformational CIO. Stakeholder engagement in combination with leadership style is seldom discussed. Our research questions are (i) what characterises leadership in the digital transformation, and (ii) what does the Scandinavian workplace model add to the knowledge of digital transformation? Our empirical evidence is the digital transformation in a large airline, the SAS, during the years 2013–2016. The process was very turbulent but eventually quite successful. We identify two Scandinavian contributions to transformation research: firstly, the deep engagement with employees, including trade unions, supports a structured process with a focus on finding solutions, not conflicts. Second, a coaching leadership style, allowing space for autonomy, leverages the competence of highly-skilled employees. © Springer International Publishing AG 2017.

Understanding the strategic relevance or significance of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in the international offshore business process outsourcing (OBPO) context requires examination of the complexity of conflicting interests of competing stakeholders, philosophical and theoretical perspectives within the frameworks of different cultures, legal systems and attitudes. This research makes an original contribution to the study of CSR activities of organisations involved in OBPO. The findings could be useful for other researchers in the areas of CSR and compliance, for evaluating or comparing other programs, or used to assist businesses involved in OBPO to target their CSR strategies. This chapter investigates how CSR, particularly the contribution of CSR to gender equity in the workforce, as it is applied and implemented by organisations that engage in OBPO. It contributes to a stream of research that addresses critical success factors for OBPO relating to relationships and end-user customers. © Springer International Publishing AG 2017.

As the amount of online content explodes, consumers have to make a choice: either cut down their mobile data consumption or pay high overage fees. We investigate a recent phenomenon whereby network service providers are encouraging content providers to sponsor data for consumers. We analyze this phenomenon using game theory within a setting of one monopoly mobile network operator (MNO) and two competing content providers (CPs). Consumers are heterogeneous in both data usage and in their preference for the CPs. We find that the MNO’s optimal profit decreases as the consumers’ data cap becomes larger, and the optimal pricing scheme is a two-part tariff without any data caps. © Springer International Publishing AG 2017.

Platform owners develop boundary resources to transfer design capabilities to third-party developers and boost innovation within platform ecosystems. The literature on boundary resources suggests the concept of tuning to depict the process where such resources are shaped through an interactive process involving platform owners, third-party developers and other actors within the platform ecology. While the literature on the tuning of boundary resources is promising and emerging, there is to our knowledge no current studies on platform owners’ measures to speed up this often prolonged process. In this research, we studied how a platform owner sought to accelerate the tuning process of its boundary resource through a case study at Volvo Group Truck Technology. In doing so, Volvo used an innovation contest where third-party developers used several boundary resources and engaged in an accelerated tuning process with Volvo Group Technology. © Springer International Publishing AG 2017.

This book constitutes the proceedings of the BPM Forum from the International Conference on business Process Management, BPM 2017, held in Barcelona, Spain, September 2017. The BPM Forum hosts innovative research which has a high potential of stimulating discussions. The papers selected for the forum are expected to showcase fresh ideas from exciting and emerging topics in BPM, even if they are not yet as mature as the regular papers at the conference. The volume contains 11 full papers carefully reviewed and selected from 97 submissions. Each paper was reviewed by a team comprising of a senior PC and four regular PC members who engage in a discussion phase after the initial reviews were prepared. The authors eventually receive four review reports, and a meta-review that summarizes the reviews and the discussion. The selected papers cover topics related to process models and metrics, mining and compliance, and to other innovative ideas such as gamification, smart devices and digital innovation as far as they pertain to BPM.

Booking high-complex travel products on the internet: The role of trust, convenience, and attitude 1

The number of electronic channels in the tourism industry has significantly increased and led to substantial changes in consumers’ booking behavior. The majority of extant research in this area addresses single travel products that show a low level of complexity (e.g., airline tickets). This study focuses on the role of product complexity by testing a research model on online booking intention of high-complex travel products which have been less investigated. The results show that for high-complex travel products, trust shows a stronger positive impact on attitude towards online booking compared to previous research. In contrast, perceived convenience of the Internet as a booking channel shows no significant impact which differs from previous findings on low-complex travel products. Attitude and subjective norm both positively influence online booking intention. The results suggest that the role of product complexity in drivers of online purchase intention should be revisited and its potential moderating impact should be considered. © Springer International Publishing AG 2017.

For over a decade both cloud computing and application rationalization are IT-strategy priorities in most organizations. Cloud computing has grown in the last decade and will continue to grow steadily. Most organizations struggle with reducing the number of applications. There remains a strong resistance from the business, to consolidate and standardize the legacy application platforms. Potentially migrating legacy applications to Software-as-a-Service applications resolves the business migration concerns. As the Software-as-a-Service functionality is a ready to use functionality which can be assessed prior to phasing out legacy applications. This is a distinct difference from a scenario where legacy applications will be replaced by to-be-(custom)-build applications. Also the implementation roadmap of Software-as-a-Services applications is much shorter and most of the Software-as-a-Services applications have data migration tools to import the data from the legacy applications into the new environment. A survey of 124 organizations indicated weak negative linear relationship between the estimated percentage Software as a Service applications and the envisioned number of applications for organizations with +500 applications for the period 2017–2022 (three two year intervals). © Springer International Publishing AG 2017.

Due to the nature of apps as experience goods and the vast product space, new product discovery in the mobile app market has become a very salient problem for developers and consumers. Our paper investigates developers’ best response to the platform’s recommendation, where the featured apps enjoy a reduction in search cost and an endorsement of quality for a limited period of time. Specifically, we consider three response options available to the developers: releasing a version update, increasing price, and decreasing price. We find that only the price decrease strategy has a positive effect on sales during the featuring window, while the effect of the price increase and version update strategy is not significant. © Springer International Publishing AG 2017.

In this research in progress-paper, we introduce the notion of ‘Electronic Word of Behavior’ (eWOB) to describe the phenomenon of consumers’ product-related behaviors increasingly made observable by online social environments. We employ Observational Learning theory to conceptualize the notion of eWOB and generate hypotheses about how consumers influence each other by means of behavior in online social environments. We present a conceptual framework for categorizing eWOB, and propose a novel research design for a randomized controlled field experiment. Specifically, the ongoing experiment aims to analyze how the presence of individual-specific behavior-based social information in a movie streaming service affects potential users’ attitude towards and intentions to use the service. © Springer International Publishing AG 2017.

Positive user evaluation reflects success for a mobile application (app). When a health app fulfills their intended objective, it leads to higher usage and garners better evaluation. Although designing an app with a clear functionality is the key to success, but most apps are built with complex functionalities with confusing objectives that may not help a user’s end objective of managing their health. In this regard, this study explores how functionality and intended health effectiveness of an app influence evaluation. Tracking a set of 188 health apps for 14 weeks, we find that functionality and appeal positively impact the evaluation of the apps. On the other hand, when the apps offer advanced and complex functionalities that are not mature and not fully integrated, the appeal will fade resulting in negative evaluations. Managerial and research contributions of the findings are discussed. © Springer International Publishing AG 2017.
