The extract method is a common way to shorten long methods in software development. Before developers can use tools that support the extract method, they need to invest time in identifying a suitable refactoring candidate. This paper addresses the problem of finding the most appropriate refactoring candidate for long methods written in Java. The approach determines valid refactoring candidates and ranks them using a scoring function that aims to improve readability and reduce code complexity. We use length and nesting reduction as complexity indicators. The number of parameters needed by the candidate influences the score. To suggest candidates that are consistent with the structure of the code, information such as comments and blank lines are also considered by the scoring function. We evaluate our approach to three open source systems using a user study with ten experienced developers. Our results show that they would actually apply 86% of suggestions for an extract method refactoring.

Many methods can be employed to evaluate the quality of websites. Although the methods can be used for different purposes and require various assessment approaches it is challenging to select a proper method adequate to the needs. The research presented in the article is focused on building a repository of knowledge about the methods for assessing the quality of a website. The repository in the form of ontologies covers a variety of quality assessment methods and makes their proper selection possible. The proposed approach was verified with major methods and the resulting ontology may act as a repository of domain knowledge.

This paper discusses a typically scaling issue, which can arise in the context of multicriteria (MCDM) portfolio analysis: the portfolio size effect. By analyzing previous application this issue may happen by the impact of an additive aggregation for the standard portfolio construction model. Thus, it has been shown that the scaling issue may arise even when baseline correction procedures are adopted and this paper suggests that additionally to the baseline adjustment, a ratio scale correction may be necessary, depending on the combination of values and constraints considered by the problem.

To improve their chances of survival, enterprises need to cope with the challenges caused by today's dynamic markets, regulations, customer demands, novel technologies, etc. The shift towards a service-oriented economy as underlined by the concept of Service-Dominant (S-D) Logic is gaining traction within the Service Science community and industry. This shift towards service-dominated business models makes it even more important for enterprises to be agile to meet the rapidly changing customer demands. This demand for agility is reinforced in the context of knowledge-based service organizations (KBSOs), for which flexible service provision is a fundamental requirement. Against this background, we argue that the capability-driven design may provide the KBSOs the required degree of flexibility. Towards this goal, we present an approach for the capability-driven design of enterprises. More precisely, our contributions are (i) the introduction of a capability-based paradigm that contributes to the design of flexible services in KBSOs, (ii) an architecture of our service design and deployment environment and (iii) a demonstration of using our approach based on a real-world use case from an organization in the utilities industry. Our results and insights are based on our work in the EU-FP7 project "Capability as a Service in Digital Enterprises" (CaaS).

We apply a pedagogic approach named learning from errors (LFE) to the area of relational database modeling. Database modeling is a complex cognitive process characterized by a high level of element interactivity. Finding an appropriate pedagogy to teach database modeling is a challenge for information systems educators. One of the challenges that practitioners meet is the need to help database students shift between different levels of abstraction. We metaphorically treat the LFE approach as a bridge over the gulf of abstraction levels. Errors have a powerful potential in education, to encourage students to move to a deeper processing level of the course material. We use Rasmussen's three levels of human performance model to explain and demonstrate the promising potential of the LFE approach in database modeling.

One of the most important theories to be used and modified subsequently in the IS literature is the privacy calculus theory. This calculus governs the decision-making process of individuals to predict certain behavioral outcome like, disclosing personal information, intention to use an e-commerce site, in the presence of perceived privacy risk and perceived benefits. In this paper, we seek to analyze the relevancy of privacy calculus theory for certain emerging technologies and platforms (i) Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) (ii) Internet Of Things (IoT). We identify some of the perceived privacy risks and benefits in these emerging technologies. The insights gained from this study will enable researchers to further study the behavioral intention of organizations/people to use these technologies in the presence of privacy risks and benefits.

'Internet of Things' (IoT) systems are fundamentally changing the way in which we interact and perceive technology. In this paper, we focus on two dimensions of IoT systems;(1) the IoT user interface and (2) the IoT ecosystem. We develop a model that identifies how data is presented to users and how users interact with the system, and the level at which systems interconnect with, and collects data from, external systems. Companies can use the model to map their systems according to the dimensions in order to: (1) identify current state of their systems, (2) identify desired state and (3) better understand the steps necessary to develop more advanced IoT systems. We evaluate the dimensions in five case companies and provide empirical evidence on the transition towards increasingly advanced IoT systems.

This paper describes the development of an information security framework that aims to comparatively assess the quality of management processes in the context of cyber-security of organizations operating within critical infrastructure sectors. A design science approach was applied to establish a framework artifact that consists of the four dimensions "Security Ambition", "Security Process", "Resilience" and "business Value". These dimensions were related to the balanced scorecard concept and information security literature. The framework includes metrics, measurement approaches and aggregation methods. In its adapted form, our framework enables a systematic compilation of information security, and seeks to display the security situation of a focal firm against the desired future states, industry benchmarks, and allows for an investigation of interdependencies. The design science research process included workshops, cyclic refinements of the instrument, pretests and the framework evaluation within 30 critical infrastructure organizations. The framework was found to be particularly useful as learning and benchmarking tool capable of highlighting weaknesses, strengths, and gaps in relation to standards.

Decision-making activities in planning a city visit typically include a pre-visit hunt for information. Hence, users spend the most of the time consulting web portals in the pre-trip phase. The possibility of obtaining social media data and providing user-generated content are powerful tools for help users in the decision process. In this work, we present our framework for profiling both single users and group of users that relies on a not intrusive analysis of the users' behaviors on social networks/media. Moreover, the analysis of the behavior of small close groups on social networks may help an automatic system in the merge of the different preferences the users may have, simulating somehow a decision process similar to a natural interaction. Such data can be used to provide POI filtering techniques on city touristic portals.

The growing competition asks for high efficiency in business with the aid of business Process Management (BPM). This article proposes a practical initiative to incorporate and leverage the BPM into organization. The research commences with the overview on the proliferation of BPM in academic community and industry. The authors modeled the appropriate processes to provide the frame for understanding and applying the BPM methodology within any organization. The obtained result, Supplier - Input - Process - Output Customer (SIPOC) diagram maps out flow and process relationships that help document and communicate stakeholders how BPM processes should be performed.
