Organizations have the need to continuously adjust their capabilities to changes in the business context. If existing IT systems and associated development methods does not support this adjustment they need to be changed to do so. However, there exist specialized methods and tools that allow the design, and run-time monitoring of context information. In this paper an approach that allows existing systems to be extended with the management of context information is presented. The approach allows organizations to analyze the potential effect and effort of combing existing systems and tools with specialized tools that handle context information. The purpose of providing means for the integrated use of existing systems and specialized tools is to leverage the strength of both. The approach in grounded in and illustrated by a case of industrial symbiosis.

Offshoring is increasingly being adopted by professional accounting firms of all sizes and has become a component of the larger business Process Outsourcing ("BPO") industry. The traditionally conservative accounting profession operates in an environment subject to an intense and dynamic regulatory oversight. There is increasing competition and a pressure to reduce costs and manage staffing shortages faced by the profession. Offshoring presents itself as a solution to these pressures and as such is a key motivator for adopting offshoring. This suggests that offshoring in accounting firms is worthy of being examined in its own right. Whilst offshoring generally has been the subject of much research, the use of offshoring in accounting firms, and in particular, research on the human resources aspect of offshoring for the domestic firm is scarce. This paper attempts to fill this void by investigating how the unique features of accounting firms apply to the general offshoring research through a rich case study approach. It demonstrates that "buy in" and human resourcing issues are important in ensuring the success of offshoring in accounting firms. This research in progress also examines the different offshoring ownership models adopted by accounting firms. Importantly, this paper introduces different interaction frameworks that firms can adopt, aiming to develop a model for firms to help them decide which is the most appropriate model and framework for them. In addition, this paper looks at the impact offshoring has on both the recruitment and development of domestic graduates in primarily Australian accounting firms and seeks to provide guidelines to assist firms in this area.

The precision of estimates may be applied to communicate the uncertainty of required software development effort. The effort estimates 1000 and 975 work-hours, for example, communicate different levels of expected estimation accuracy. Through observational and experimental studies we found that software professionals (i) sometimes, but not in the majority of the examined projects, used estimate precision to convey effort uncertainty, (ii) tended to interpret overly precise, inaccurate effort estimates as indicating low developer competence and low trustworthiness of the estimates, while too narrow effort prediction intervals had the opposite effect. This difference remained even when the actual effort was known to be outside the narrow effort prediction interval. We identified several challenges related to the use of the precision of single value estimates to communicate effort uncertainty and recommend that software professionals use effort prediction intervals, and not the preciseness of single value estimates, to communicate effort uncertainty.

Process mining is an emerging discipline whose aim is to discover, monitor and improve real processes by extracting knowledge from event logs representing actual process executions in a given organizational setting. In this light, it can be applied only if faithful event logs, adhering to accepted standards (such as XES), are available. In many real-world settings, though, such event logs are not explicitly given, but are instead implicitly represented inside legacy information systems of organizations, which are typically managed through relational technology. In this work, we devise a novel framework that supports domain experts in the extraction of XES event log information from legacy relational databases, and consequently enables the application of standard process mining tools on such data. Differently from previous work, the extraction is driven by a conceptual representation of the domain of interest in terms of an ontology. On the one hand, this ontology is linked to the underlying legacy data leveraging the well-established ontology-based data access (OBDA) paradigm. On the other hand, our framework allows one to enrich the ontology through user-oriented log extraction annotations, which can be flexibly used to provide different log-oriented views over the data. Different data access modes are then devised so as to view the legacy data through the lens of XES.

business processes heavily rely on data. Data is used as input for activities;it is manipulated during process execution and it serves for decisions made during the process. Thus, changes (in values or structure) of data may influence large portions of the business process. We introduce in this paper the concept of `data impact analysis' which analyzes the effects of data elements on other business process elements, including activities, routing constraints, and other data elements. This type of analysis is important in scenarios such as process or database redesign and unexpected changes in data values. The paper further proposes a set of primitives depicting impacts of data within business processes, and demonstrates the use of these primitives to query the overall impact of a data element within a business process.

Contemporary enterprise information systems (IS) need to be sustainable in order to provision long-lasting functionality in the presence of changes in customers' demand, varying environmental aspects, regulations, and many other factors. A key challenge is the need to adjust according to changes at run-time of the IS because not all of them can be anticipated and elaborates at the design time. Lately, the notion of capability has emerged in IS engineering as an instrument that integrates organizational development with IS development, taking into account changes in the application context of the solution. To this end, a methodology and a development environment have been elaborated with the concept of capability in focus, under the name of Capability Driven Development (CDD). It encompasses three key perspectives of organizational design - Enterprise Modeling, context modeling, and pattern modeling. The objectives of this paper are to present how the key perspectives have been incorporated in the CDD methodology, how the methodology has been supported by the CDD environment, and how the methodology and the environment have been used in practice. The application of the proposed approach is discussed for two business cases - outsourcing of energy management services at SIV AG (Germany), and e-government service portfolio provisioning at Everis (Spain).

Recently, a surge in the use of declarative process models has been witnessed. These constraint-driven models excel at representing and enacting flexible and adaptable decision processes in application areas such as scheduling and workflow management. This work examines the intricacies of the most widespread declarative process language, Declare, which are commonly referred to as hidden dependencies. These dependencies typically increase the steepness of the learning curve of Declare models and making them explicit can lower the threshold for modelers to use Declare in a sense-making and intuitive way. This work proposes a way to gamify Declare models for novice users by annotating such models with extra constraint and dependency information, and feedback. Hence, it offers the ability of discovering Declare and its intricacies in a game-like fashion which lowers the threshold for learning these cognitively demanding models, as well as to use them for assessing modeling efforts by verifying that the desired behavior is present.

This paper extends a previous work done by the same authors [1] having the aim of improving the predictions coming from a matrix factorization based on latent factor models through an ensemble with the predictions obtained by an Opinion Mining methodology based on a linguistic approach. The experimental analysis was carried out on the Yelp business dataset, limited to the Restaurant category. An hypothesis of influence of the restaurant average rating on the number of stars given by the users is tested. An analysis of the meaning of some of the latent factors is shown.

Patient web portals can play an important role in alleviating rising healthcare costs. Portals can help patients to get reminders about conducting diagnostic tests and care regime after a hospital admission to reduce subsequent readmissions. This research in progress has the focus to investigate the effect of portal based health reminders on the unplanned hospital readmissions. We argue reminders would have a reducing effect on readmissions with each view of diagnostic test reminders. An empirical strategy is proposed that would use an archival data set through a medical provider. We discuss the contributions and practice of our findings.
