[Context & Motivation] The business Process Management is an important and widespread adopted proposal for modelling process specifications and developing an executable framework for the management of the process itself. In particular the monitoring facilities associated to the on-line process execution provide an important means to the control of process evolution and quality. In this context, this paper provides an experience on the application of business process modelling techniques and process mining techniques to the TPCS, Tuscan Port Community System. This is a web-services based platform with multi-level access control and data recovery facilities, developed for supporting and strengthening the Motorways of the Sea and Italian regulations. The paper describes a storytelling approach applied to derive the TPCS business process model and the conformance checking techniques used to validate it and improve the overall TPCS software quality.

Local clothing retailers compete with online retailers but have difficulties to increase cross-selling revenues. Therefore, a data-driven sales process is conceptualized that uses data from social software in order to increase revenue. It identifies and tracks the customer using RFIDs in customer loyalty cards. By these means, social data can be used in all phases of the purchase and both for major and minor purchases. Individual product suggestions and offerings can be tailored. Local retailers are able to catch up with online retailers in their cross-and upselling revenues. In consequence, local retailers are able to stay competitive.

With rapid increase of the use of cloud services, the availability of Quality of Service (QoS) information is becoming of utmost importance to assist application managers in selection of suitable services for their enterprise applications. Due to different characteristics of cloud and on-premise services, monitoring and management of cloud-based enterprise applications requires a different approach that involves the monitoring of QoS parameters such as availability and response time in different geographic locations. In this paper, we propose a multi-site model for the monitoring and optimization of cloud-based enterprise applications that evaluates the availability and response time of cloud services concurrently across different geographic locations. Our preliminary results using eWay and PayPal payment services monitored in eleven sites across four geographic regions indicate that location-based information can be used to improve the reliability and performance of cloud-based enterprise applications.

This paper presents experience obtained in modelling and simulation of stakeholder-driven interactions for improved transport service design. The presented results describe value-aware, service model driven design artefacts supporting smart transport service development. The Socio-Technical System Engineering process is used in order to generate modelling and simulation artefacts, based on an executable representation of requirements. As a case study, the paper presents an improved design approach for a city transport information service to support travellers with valuable information regarding planning a trip in a city. This attempt to integrate agent-based modelling and simulation experience into the development of smart transport services emphasises the role of the development platform that provides tools for model analysis, validation, simulation, and real-time animation. The development platform's role in transposing the above mentioned aspects in practice is emphasized and integration guidelines of the STSE process steps with the IBM Rational Rhapsody (R) development platform are described.

The measurement of work-related stress (WRS) for health providers is a crucial but cumbersome task. In this study a "WRS identity card" (WRS-ID) is proposed to self-monitor WRS risk in one organization, with an emphasis on health professionals and administrative employees at hospital. The method is based on a standard questionnaire purposely designed and validated by INAIL, the National Authorities for Prevention and Protection of Health at Workplace, which provides input data for a statistical inference analysis. The procedure is illustrated on a representative dataset from medical organization to discriminate between WRS levels between different departments. More specifically, thanks to over 3000 questionnaires anonymously administered by authors in hospital departments in one of the most relevant health care organization in the Southern Italy, it has been outlined how innovative and effective tools to monitor WRS are crucial, especially due to the specific health care workers' psycho-physical conditions. Theoretical and managerial implications have been provided.

We consider a system modeled as a set of interacting components evolving along time according to explicit timing constraints. The decision making problem consists in selecting and organizing actions in order to reach a goal state in a limited time and in an optimal manner, assuming actions have a cost. We propose to reformulate the planning problem in terms of model-checking and controller synthesis such that the state to reach is expressed using a temporal logic. We have chosen to represent each agent using the formalism of Priced Timed Game Automata (PTGA) and a set of knowledge. PTGA is an extension of Timed Automata that allows the representation of cost on actions and the definition of a goal (to reach or to avoid). This paper describes two algorithms designed to answer the planning problem on a network of agents and proposes practical implementation using model-checking tools that shows promising results on an agricultural application: a grassland based dairy production system.

This paper investigates how technological innovations such as broad-band mobile Internet and the development to performance- and search-based online advertising determine the corporate scope of established Internet players. Theoretically grounded in the resource-based view and the theory of dynamic capabilities and complemented by a contingency perspective, this study investigates an established Internet player offering domain trading and domain parking services. It finds that the widely appreciated, exogenous technological innovations of the mobile Internet act as antecedent of change in corporate scope and service offerings, which cause not only up-scoping, but also down-scoping decisions [1]. Thereby, the paper contributes to the literature on resource- and capability-based opportunities in technologically changing e-business environments and complements prior research on exogenously driven corporate scope and e-business model developments.

Process model element labels are critical for an appropriate association between a symbol instance in a model and the corresponding real world meaning. Disciplines, in which an efficient presentation of text labels is crucial (e.g., cartography) have continuously improved their visualization design techniques for labels since they serve as effective cognitive aids in problem solving. Despite the relevance of labels for information exploration, surprisingly little research has been undertaken on the visual design of element labels of business process models. This paper fills this gap and provides a comprehensive overview of visual design options for process model element labels. First, we summarize the findings existing in the diverse areas of literature relevant to visual display of process model element labels. Second, we analyze the status quo of visual design of element labels in common business process modeling tools indicating only little layouting support. Third, we give recommendations regarding the visual design of element labels. To our knowledge, this is the first comprehensive analysis of visual design of process model element labels.

Analysis is an important part of the Enterprise Architecture Management Process. Prior to decisions regarding transformation of the Enterprise Architecture, the current situation and the outcomes of alternative action plans have to be analysed. Many analysis approaches have been proposed by researchers and current Enterprise Architecture Management tools implement analysis functionalities. However, few work has been done structuring and classifying Enterprise Architecture Analysis approaches. This paper collects and extends existing classification schemes, presenting a framework for Enterprise Architecture Analysis classification. For evaluation, a collection of Enterprise Architecture Analysis approaches has been classified based on this framework. As a result, the description of these approaches has been assessed, a common set of important categories for Enterprise Architecture Analysis classification has been derived and suggestions for further development are drawn.

The paper describes an initiative carried out on the Italian territory, the ASAP Service Management Forum, as an exemplary practice contributing to spreading the service management culture across firms as well as cross-fertilizing good practices and the development of joint academia-practitioners's research and education initiative. Within the ASAP Service Management Forum community, in particular, an extensive study has been carried out about the competence needed for service management roles and the professional lifelong training activities carried out at company level. Moreover, an analysis of the educational activities carried out at the ***. or post-master level in Italy and abroad has been carried out. The results of these studies show that despite the growing interest and development of activities and educational activities in the field there is still a largely untapped potential in this area.
