Process mining techniques can be used to discover, analyze and improve real processes, by extracting models from observed behavior. The aim of this book is conformance checking, one of the main areas of process mining. In conformance checking, existing process models are compared with actual observations of the process in order to assess their quality. Conformance checking techniques are a way to visualize the differences between assumed process represented in the model and the real process in the event log, pinpointing possible problems to address, and the business process management results that rely on these models. This book combines both application and research perspectives. It provides concrete use cases that illustrate the problems addressed by the techniques in the book, but at the same time, it contains complete conceptualization and formalization of the problem and the techniques, and through evaluations on the quality and the performance of the proposed techniques. Hence, this book brings the opportunity for business analysts willing to improve their organization processes, and also data scientists interested on the topic of process-oriented data science.

Improving the quality and efficiency of modeling is an important goal of many research approaches. A number of influence factors outside the modeling environment are investigated. To measure the influence objective measures are necessary. Therefore, this paper strives to create a foundation for such a measures, by measuring the influence of caffeine on the modeling performance. Choosing caffeine has the important advantage to provide an unbiased setting. The possible path of influence of caffeine on the modeling performance is analyzed. A research model is developed and the result of a pre-study are discussed.

The term 'framework' appears very often in scientific publications like journals and conferences. However, there is no universal definition of a framework. It seems that the term is not used in a consistent way by authors publishing on frameworks since they have very little in common compared to each other. The goal of this work is to analyse and show how frameworks in the fields of information systems are handled in the scientific literature over the past 10 years as well as giving a universal definition of the term 'framework' based on the relevant studies. The systematic literature review will serve to identify those studies and to categorize the identified frameworks. The contributions of this work are (1) a general overview about frameworks in the past 10 years, (2) a proposed categorization of frameworks and (3) a general definition of the term 'framework'.

Cloud computing has important impacts on the environment: data centers - that represent the physical infrastructure where the cloud resources run - are not always designed as green entities, as they consume large amounts of energy (in form of electric power or fuel) often producing significant amounts of CO2 emissions. Such emissions depend on the energy sources used by the data centers and may vary over time with respect to the location in which the data center is operating. To decrease the carbon footprint of cloud computing, the selection of the site where to deploy an application, along with the decision of when to start the execution of the application, should be based not only on the satisfaction of the traditional QoS requirements but also on the energy-related constraints and their dynamics over time. Goal of this paper is to propose a CO2 emission model able to support emission forecasting, especially for data centers that are based on electricity from the national grid. The proposed emission model can be used to improve the decisions on where and when to deploy applications on data centers in order to minimize CO2 emissions.

A growing number of organizations are moving towards more open and collaborative workplaces. In these offices workers share a common open space, often with flexible seating based on activities, so called activity-based offices. Most problems in these workplaces are related to sound. Thus, the question of how to design suitable acoustic environments, supporting both collaborative and individual work, has emerged. Noise-reduction approaches do not suffice. In this study we explored the possibility of adding context-sensitive, activity-based sound environments to enhance the office workplace. For this purpose, we developed the "sound bubble," a prototype for individual work, sonically immersing the listener and generating a sensation of an encapsulating sonic environment. A total of 43 test subjects participated in an experiencebased test using the sound bubble prototype while conducting self-selected, ordinary work tasks in their office landscape. Their behaviors during the test were observed and documented. All participants took a post-experience questionnaire about experiences working in the sound bubble, and two subjects were interviewed. The responses show that the sound bubble can enhance auditory work conditions for individual work that demands concentration.

The article is related to the problem of decision support in dynamic business contexts where conditions, values and goals frequently change over time, and users should participate continuously in the problem definition. In our research we explore an opportunity to organize and simplify decision support during complex resource allocation processes by combining domain specific languages (DSL) and distributed constraint satisfaction techniques (DCSP). We describe a particular domain-specific language and the corresponding semantic model in terms of a newly proposed DSL&DCSP framework. Applicability of the framework is demonstrated using a real-life example of resource allocation process in the railway transportation.

The ongoing development of Internet of Things technologies leads to the interweaving of the virtual world of software with the physical world. However, applying workflow technologies for automating processes in these Cyber-physical Systems (CPS) poses new challenges as the real world effects of a process have to be verified to provide a consistent view of the cyber and physical world executions. In this work we present a synchronization and adaptation mechanism for processes based on theMAPE-K feedback loop for self-adaptive systems. By applying this loop, sensor and context information can be used to verify the real world effects of workflow execution and adapt the process in case of errors. The approach increases autonomy and resilience of process execution in CPS due to the self-adaptation capabilities. We present generic extensions to process meta-models and execution engines to implement the feedback loop and discuss our approach within a smart home scenario.

The construction of a business process simulation (BPS) model requires significant modeling efforts. This paper focuses on modeling the inter-arrival time (IAT) of entities, i.e. the time between the arrival of consecutive entities. Accurately modeling entity arrival is crucial as it influences process performance metrics such as the average waiting time. In this respect, the analysis of event logs can be useful. Given the limited process mining support for this BPS modeling task, the contribution of this paper is twofold. Firstly, an IAT input model taxonomy for process mining is introduced, describing event log use depending on process and event log characteristics. Secondly, ARPRA is introduced and operationalized for gamma distributed IATs. This novel approach to mine an IAT input model is the first to explicitly integrate the notion of queues. ARPRA is shown to significantly outperform a benchmark approach which ignores queue formation.

Electronic commerce (EC) development takes place in a complex and dynamic environment that includes high levels of risk and uncertainty. This paper proposes a new method for assessing the risks associated with EC development using multi-criteria decision-making techniques A model based on the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and the technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) is proposed to assist EC project managers and decision makers in formalizing the types of thinking that are required in assessing the current risk environment of their EC development in a more systematic manner than previously. The solution includes the use of AHP for analyzing the problem structure and determining the weights of risk factors. The TOPSIS technique helps to obtain a final ranking among projects, and the results of an evaluation show the usefulness performance of the method.

An agile enterprise requires evolvable information systems and organizational structures. Some design theories, e.g. Normalized Systems theory, which were originally developed for designing information systems, have been generalized and extended for the design of organizations. In addition to information systems, Normalized Systems theory has recently expanded its applicability into the organizational level, including business process. This resulted in a set of 25 design guidelines for Normalized Systems business Processes. On the other hand, Enterprise Ontology provides advantages in understanding the essence of organizations for massive abstraction and complexity reduction. Since these two streams of research apparently have similar goals, i.e. designing enterprises, using different approaches, some early studies tried to compare or combine them. However, most of them achieved limited success. This research investigates the literature, looking for a new way to connect them. It concludes that it may be possible to sequentially utilize those two artifacts in two different phases of enterprise engineering.
