BPM is a systematic approach that enables an organization to achieve results that are consistent and aligned with its strategic objectives. In this context, organizations need to measure the performance of their processes, thereby enabling them to support planning, inducing control and making it possible to diagnose the current situation. The research that led to this article was prompted by the paucity of empirical investigations into performance measures offered in the literature and recognition of the difficulties that organizations face when attempting to verify the results of their business processes. From a systematic review of the literature, it became evident that, among the approaches discussed, there are several variations in the methodology, in the specifications of the measures and even as to how business processes are evaluated. By undertaking a comparative evaluation of the approaches, a set of criteria was defined which addresses not only theory, based on the references, but also some usability aspects of a process performance model. Thus, we proposed the definition of a new approach that brings together elements and recommendations selected from the approaches analyzed, plus enhancements. To evaluate the proposed approach, a case study is discussed, and important results presented which demonstrate its applicability.

This paper describes the assessment of performance of educational services recurring to benchmarking. We adopted two perspectives for the evaluation of secondary schools, aligned with the objectives of different stakeholders. In the society perspective schools are viewed as promoting students achievement ( ideally including not only academic results but also interpersonal capacities) given the students characteristics in terms of academic abilities and socio-economic backgrounds. In the educational authorities perspective schools are viewed as transforming a set of resources ( including students with given characteristics in terms of academic abilities and socioeconomic backgrounds and also school resources, such as teachers) into students achievement. The relative performance assessment was carried out using Data Envelopment Analysis models, followed by an exploratory analysis of contextual indicators that potentially affect schools' performance, in order to understand their impact on the educational process.

High energy consumption of sensor devices is a major problem in smart building systems, since it strongly impacts the system lifetime. However, existing approaches are often fitted to a single monitoring application and rely on static configurations for sensor devices: optimization of their acquisition and transmission frequencies to actual multiple application requirements is not tackled. In this paper, we focus on energy-aware dynamic sensor device re-configuration to lower energy consumption while fulfilling real-time application requirements. We introduce the Smart-Service Stream-oriented Sensor Management (3SoSM) that binds together sensor configuration and management of sensor data streams. We present a multi-application monitoring system architecture that optimizes application requirements for data streams into sensor device configurations, and we relate the experiments with our experimental platform.

The request of effective credit scoring models is rising in these last decades, due to the increase of consumer lending. Their objective is to divide the loan applicants into two classes, reliable or unreliable, on the basis of the available information. The linear discriminant analysis is one of the most common techniques used to define these models, although this simple parametric statistical method does not overcome some problems, the most important of which is the imbalanced distribution of data by classes. It happens since the number of default cases is much smaller than that of non-default ones, a scenario that reduces the effectiveness of the machine learning approaches, e.g., neural networks and random forests. The in Maximum Entropy (DME) approach proposed in this paper leads toward two interesting results: on the one hand, it evaluates the new loan applications in terms of maximum entropy difference between their features and those of the non-default past cases, using for the model training only these last cases, overcoming the imbalanced learning issue;on the other hand, it operates proactively, overcoming the cold-start problem. Our model has been evaluated by using two real-world datasets with an imbalanced distribution of data, comparing its performance to that of the most performing state-of-the-art approach: random forests.

In enterprise modeling it is customary to differentiate between the current, as-is situation and the future to-be situation and develop models of these to plan for how to fill the gap. In practice you are never able to implement the ideal to-be model, each to-be will be incremental steps on the way to a future best practice. So it will be useful to also maintain a separate ought-to-be model, to not forget the situation you strive for. A distinction between the ought-to-be, as-is, and the to-be model is necessary, and we have in this paper provided the basis for an approach for combining top-down ought-to-be and bottom-up as-is and to-be modelling to support the dynamic interplay between these models. The approach is illustrated through a practical application in the healthcare sector. The main results is that it is found beneficial to represent the to-be and ought-to-be models separately, to be able to discuss the long-term goals without being hampered by short-term technical and organizational limitations, but still have support for developing the next version of the organization.

The purpose of business process diagrams is mainly to make the communication between process-related stakeholders more effective. Currently, BPMN (business Process Model and Notation) is the leader and de-facto standard for business process modeling. However, the notation and their corresponding diagrams have been perceived as complex by many different researchers. Much work was already done in order to manage such complexity by changing or extending the existing BPMN notation. In this paper, we will propose a solution that aims to decrease the complexity of business process diagrams without changing the notation or existing approaches by introducing opacity-driven graphical highlights.

Modern e-service providers rely on service innovation to stay relevant. Once a new service package is designed, implementation-specific aspects such as value (co-) creation and cost/benefit analysis are investigated. However, due to time-to-market or competitive advantage constraints, innovative services are rarely assessed for potential risks of fraud before they are put out on the market. But these risks may result in loss of economic value for actors involved in the e-service's provision. Our e(3) fraud approach automatically generates and prioritizes undesired-able scenarios from a business value model of the e-service, thereby drastically reducing the time needed to conduct an assessment. We provide examples from telecom service provision to motivate and illustrate the utility of the tool.

Architectural knowledge is an important artifact for many software development and quality control activities. Examples for quality control activities based on architectural information are architecture reviews, dependency analyses, and conformance analyses. Architecture is also an important artifact for understanding, reuse, evolution, and maintenance. Unfortunately, in many projects architectural knowledge often remains implicit and is not available for a particular system stakeholder or outdated when it is actually needed. To address this problem, we propose to manage semi-formal software architecture knowledge in a central repository, where it is accessible to all stakeholders and where it can be automatically and continuously updated and analyzed by different tools. In this paper we discuss important elements and use cases of such an approach, and present an example for an architecture knowledge and information repository in the context of an enterprise service-oriented architecture (SOA).

Only humans may decide whether a column or a set of columns of a table should store minimally unique values. Not adding to a table any existing constraint (business rule), which includes keys, allows for storing implausible instances in it. Unfortunately, 2(n) possibilities should be considered in the worst case for a table with n columns in order to discover all of its keys. This paper presents and discusses contrastively three as efficient as possible, sound, and complete algorithms that assist database designers in discovering all existing keys in the corresponding subuniverse of discourse.

Application Portfolio (AP) complexity is an increasingly important and strongly discussed issue by both researchers and practitioners. Application portfolios in large organizations have become more and more difficult to understand, resulting in costly efforts to maintain and operate them. Although this is an urgent topic in large organizations, researchers and industry experts do not yet have a common understanding of this phenomenon and lack appropriate methods to measure and manage the respective complexity. We conduct an exploratory case study with the central enterprise architecture management (EAM) governance team and ten application owners of a large European automotive company to identify and link root causes and consequences of AP complexity. Furthermore, we evaluate possible solutions to decrease or manage this complexity from an application owners perspective. The results are interpreted from a socio-technical systems perspective.
