[Context] Many software projects fail due to problems in requirements engineering (RE). [Goal] The goal of this paper is analyzing a specific and relevant RE problem in detail: incomplete/hidden requirements. [Method] We replicated a global family of RE surveys with representatives of software organizations in Austria and Brazil. We used the data to (a) characterize the criticality of the selected RE problem, and to (b) analyze the reported main causes and mitigation actions. Based on the analysis, we discuss how to prevent the problem. [Results] The survey includes 14 different organizations in Austria and 74 in Brazil, including small, medium and large sized companies, conducting both, plan-driven and agile development processes. Respondents from both countries cited the incomplete/hidden requirements problem as one of the most critical RE problems. We identified and graphically represented the main causes and documented solution options to address these causes. Further, we compiled a list of reported mitigation actions. [Conclusions] From a practical point of view, this paper provides further insights into common causes of incomplete/hidden requirements and on how to prevent this problem.

Patient web portals can play an important role in alleviating rising healthcare costs. Portals can help patients to get reminders about conducting diagnostic tests and care regime after a hospital admission to reduce subsequent readmissions. This research in progress has the focus to investigate the effect of portal based health reminders on the unplanned hospital readmissions. We argue reminders would have a reducing effect on readmissions with each view of diagnostic test reminders. An empirical strategy is proposed that would use an archival data set through a medical provider. We discuss the contributions and practice of our findings.

Implementing management support information systems with the use of outsourcing is the prevalent method of completing this type of project. Agency theory is one of the significant categories of theories used in the analysis of IT outsourcing. Literature studies indicate a research gap concerning the phenomenon of moral hazard in IT projects consisting in the implementation of management support information systems. The scope of this article is to present research results on the phenomenon of moral hazard amongst Polish and German clients and suppliers of MIS. The author used the case study method. The research results may be interesting for theoreticians of business informatics and for practitioners completing IT projects both in enterprises and government agencies.

Data-centric approaches are very promising. The inference of business processes from the structure of data provides more flexibility than the activity-based approaches which enforce a specific flow of behavior. However, the price for this flexibility is the lack of a standard organizational behavior. Actually, there is a tension between the standardization of workers' behavior and allowing them to deal with unexpected situations by using their own tacit knowledge. The blended workflow approach [1] integrates activity-based with goal-based representations of a workflow to balance these two aspects. In this paper we describe how to design two workflow models, an activity-based and a goal-based, from a common data-model. The overall approach consists on a stepwise generation of models departing from an annotated data model where an intermediate state model is used to define the set of conditions that both workflow models, activity and goal, have to support.

We consider a system modeled as a set of interacting components evolving along time according to explicit timing constraints. The decision making problem consists in selecting and organizing actions in order to reach a goal state in a limited time and in an optimal manner, assuming actions have a cost. We propose to reformulate the planning problem in terms of model-checking and controller synthesis such that the state to reach is expressed using a temporal logic. We have chosen to represent each agent using the formalism of Priced Timed Game Automata (PTGA) and a set of knowledge. PTGA is an extension of Timed Automata that allows the representation of cost on actions and the definition of a goal (to reach or to avoid). This paper describes two algorithms designed to answer the planning problem on a network of agents and proposes practical implementation using model-checking tools that shows promising results on an agricultural application: a grassland based dairy production system.

business Process Standardization (BPS) is an important instrument to enhance an organizations' competitiveness. A crucial element to achieve BPS is the change-supportive attitude by the affected employees. Previous studies have drawn attention on various determinants of attitude such as the employee's motivation and culture but also on the broader process and work environment and on an employee's perception of the embeddedness of their tasks. In this paper, we draw on the latter and on the theoretical concepts of self-construal and task interdependence to develop a theoretical concept named 'job construals'. To measure the construct, we develop a valid measurement scale. Therefore, we use a card sorting approach with BPM experts to assess the validity of the measure. The contribution of our work lies in understanding the drivers of BPS acceptance and consequently the successful implementation of process standardization initiatives.

During the development of a process-aware information system, there might exist multiple process models that describe the system's behavior at different levels of abstraction. Thus, containment checking is important for detecting unwanted deviations of process models to ensure a refined low-level model still conforms to its high-level counterpart. In our earlier work, we have interpreted the containment checking problem as a model checking problem and leveraged existing powerful model checkers for this purpose. The model checker will detect any discordance of the input models and yield corresponding counterexamples. The counterexamples, however, are often difficult for developers with limited knowledge of the underlying formal methods to understand. In this paper, we present an approach for interpreting the outcomes of containment checking of process models. Our approach aims to analyze the input models and counterexamples to identify the actual causes of containment inconsistencies. Based on the analysis, we can suggest a set of countermeasures to resolve the inconsistencies. The analysis results and countermeasures are visually presented along with the involved model elements such that the developers can easily understand and fix the problems.

Word clouds have been proven as an effective tool for information access in different domains. As social media is a main driver of large increase in available user generated content, means for accessing information in such content are needed. We study word clouds as a means for information access in social media. Currently-used clouds that are generated from social media data include redundant and mis-ranked entries, harming their utility. We propose a method for generating improved word clouds over social streams. In this method, named entities are detected, disambiguated and aggregated into clusters, which in turn inform cloud construction. We show that word clouds using named entity clusters attain broader coverage and decreased content duplication. Further, an extrinsic evaluation shows improved access to data, with word clouds having grouped named entities being rated more relevant and diverse. Additionally we find word clouds with higher Mean Average Precision (MAP) tend to be more relevant to underlying concepts. Critically, this supports MAP as a tool for predicting cloud quality without needing a human.

The proposed conceptual model deals with two areas - Cost Allocation and Planning for Management of business Informatics. This paper shows some limitations of the model, its architecture - the individual layers of the model, key principles of cost allocation on which the proposed model is based, and factors which must be taken into account during the development and subsequent implementation of the model. Practical experience with model's implementation in business are discussed. In conclusion, there are several ideas for the future development of the reference model.

Traditional navigation of websites and web-based systems has a limited information value apart from text values of individual navigation items. We present a method for constructing an information-rich navigation, based on advantages of vertical menus, site maps and tag clouds. Our solution is theoretically grounded in classification of organization schemes and presents an arrangement by all organization schemes simultaneously. Layers of organization are distinguished by a combined use of textual, spatial and visual techniques. Proposed method utilizes combination of objective means of organization, increased information density and reduced interaction cost. This arrangement is expected to facilitate efficient browsing in web environment and is applicable also on learning or knowledge management systems.
