A process sharing platform will be launched in 2015 for the Swiss E-Government BPM community. The platform will be open to public administrations, private BPM practitioners, and academics. We reflect in this paper on the general opportunities and challenges of such a platform. We have identified four domains in which it can greatly improve the efficiency of BPM projects and the general BPM uptake in public administrations: planning, process modeling, comparative analysis and systemic analysis. Despite all the potential of such a platform, we believe that there is also a risk that the users might not engage sufficiently in the community for the platform to be successful. We believe the communication on and about the platform should be given particular attention, by the use of professional marketing tools and methods. We also advise that a step-by-step BPM methodology serving as a general guideline for the public administration should be published on the platform and maintained by the community. This methodology could not only help in rising the success rate of BPM projects in the administration, but could also improve the perception of added value of the platform amongst practitioners and decision-makers by raising their understanding of BPM to the required level.

There are a number of methods for business process improvement that are used in practice and investigated in theory, such as Lean or Six Sigma. Most of these methods are activity based and they are aimed at optimizing the activities flow, and/or the usage of resources in the process. These methods suit well the workflow-based processes and thinking, but they are not easily adaptable to Case/Adaptive Case Management (CM/ACM) processes, the goal of improvement for which is improving the overall result from the knowledge workers cooperative work. Another distinctive feature of CM/ACM is that the process is guided not through which flow of activities to use in certain situations, but through a set of templates to use in these situations. This paper outlines a possible method of improving CM/ACM processes based on the Viable System Model (VSM). Though the usage of VSM for process improvement has been reported in the literature, it was not specifically applied to CM/ACM processes. The outline is based on the analysis of the process of organizing a series of scientific events, such as the AdaptiveCM workshop.

Data-centric approaches are very promising. The inference of business processes from the structure of data provides more flexibility than the activity-based approaches which enforce a specific flow of behavior. However, the price for this flexibility is the lack of a standard organizational behavior. Actually, there is a tension between the standardization of workers' behavior and allowing them to deal with unexpected situations by using their own tacit knowledge. The blended workflow approach [1] integrates activity-based with goal-based representations of a workflow to balance these two aspects. In this paper we describe how to design two workflow models, an activity-based and a goal-based, from a common data-model. The overall approach consists on a stepwise generation of models departing from an annotated data model where an intermediate state model is used to define the set of conditions that both workflow models, activity and goal, have to support.

Conceptual models often capture the invariant aspects of the phenomena we perceive. These invariants may be considered static when they refer to structures we perceive in phenomena at a particular point in time or dynamic/temporal when they refer to regularities across different points in time. While static invariants have received significant attention, dynamics enjoy marginal support in widely-employed techniques such as UML and OCL. This paper aims at addressing this gap by proposing a technique for the representation of dynamic invariants of subject domains in UML-based conceptual models. For that purpose, a temporal extension of OCL is proposed. It enriches the ontologically well-founded OntoUML profile and enables the expression of a variety of (arbitrary) temporal constraints. The extension is fully implemented in the tool for specification, verification and simulation of enriched OntoUML models.

Dynamic business process management (dBPM) is contingent on the practical viability of automated process adaptation techniques. Various approaches to support process adaptation have been investigated, yet they typically expect some level of manual interaction or involve some amalgamation of additional modeling paradigms or language extensions. Additionally, cross-cutting process adaptation concerns and a distributed and cloud-based process adaptation capability have not been adequately addressed. AProPro (Adapting Processes via Processes), a flexible and cloud-capable approach towards dBPM, supports adapting target processes using adaptation processes while retaining an intuitive and consistent imperative process paradigm. The evaluation consists of case studies in both a business and an engineering domain and demonstrates the approach in a distributed Adaptation-as-a-Service cloud setting. The results show the viability of the approach across various domains.

In the last years, are emerging new hybrid structures in the organizational landscape that combine characteristics from different sectors. Social enterprises are a particular type of organization whose operations address social and economic concerns. These organizations face many challenges once mission and profit aims are integrated in the same strategy. In this paper are identified the main operations decisions in social enterprises and is drafted a research agenda for service operations decisions in hybrid organizations. Are pointed four main topics that claim more research efforts: (1) Goals of operations strategy;(2) Mix owned versus external resources;(3) Integration of resources for social versus income generating activities;(4) Performance management.

Capability management is attracting more and more attention in different research and industry areas. A starting point for implementing capability management in an organization often is to identify desired and existing capabilities in relation to the organization's goals and to specify the capability. Due to the close relationship to organizational goals, tool support for capability modelling should also include capturing goal or even complete enterprise models. The aim of the paper is to contribute to an understanding what kind of tool support is suitable for capability management to capture enterprise goals. The focus in this paper is on goal modelling as part of capability modelling tools and aims at comparing modelling without computer support, modelling with tools enforcing a meta-model and modeling with support of a drawing tool. The comparison is based on experiments.

A number of prior studies have been conducted to assess the extent of progress within these stages in the BI area. Among them, a study of Eom [1] has provided bibliometric evidence that the decision support system has made meaningful progress over the past three and a half decades (1969-2004). The primary data for this study were gathered from a total of 498 citing articles in the BI/DSS area over the past eight years (2005-2012). This study, based on author cocitation analysis (ACA), presents two important findings. First, the empirical consensus of BI researchers reveals that the focus of business intelligence research is shifting to knowledge management and data mining. Second, since ACA is a supporting quantitative tool that must be used with further qualitative analysis of bibliographic data, we examined the foundational concepts of knowledge management provided by the most influential scholars and their most frequently cited publications.

Analytics Process Management (APM) is an emerging branch of business Process Management that is focused on supporting business Analysts and others as they apply analytics approaches, algorithms, and outputs in order to discover and/or repeatedly produce business-relevant insights and apply them into on-going business operations. While APM is now occurring in many businesses, it is typically managed in ad hoc ways using a variety of different tools and practices. This paper proposes to use principles from Case Management (or equivalently, business Artifacts) to provide a foundational structure for APM. In particular, six key classes of Case Types are identified, that can model the vast majority of activities and data being manipulated in APM contexts. These Case Types can simplify support for managing provenance, auditability, repeatability, and explanation of analytics results. The paper also identifies two key adaptations of the classical Case Management paradigm that are needed to support APM. The paper validates the proposed Case Types and adaptations by examining two recent systems built at IBM Research that support business Analysists in the use of analytics tools.

Increasingly the business success and economic opportunities steadily depend on IT-enabled capabilities and IT-driven business transformations. The strategic alignment of IT capabilities to organizational business strategy, as content and processes, ensures further IT governance to seize opportunities for improvements and to maximize revenue. Utilizing a well deliberated framework-Operating model, Enterprise architecture, and IT engagement model-the paper explores the impact of emerging technologies on the alignment process. Currently, companies across the globe are going through a very disruptive technology development: Consumerization of IT. Consumerization of IT, along with workforce mobility, reliable, accessible and affordable remote computing, are forcefully reshaping the corporate IT lanscape, affecting the relationship between enterprise IT, knowledge workers, corporate users, and consumers. The paper confers the impact of these trends on the IT domain and specifically emphasizes on the dynamic forces interlinking IT capabilities with the business agility, growth and asset utilization.
