This book contains the refereed proceedings of the 17th International Conference on business Process Modeling, Development and Support, BPMDS 2016, and the 21st International Conference on Exploring Modeling Methods for Systems Analysis and Design, EMMSAD 2016, held together with the 28th International Conference on Advanced information Systems Engineering (CAiSE 2016) in Ljubljana, Slovenia, in June 2016. The focus theme for BPMDS 2016 papers was business Processes in a Connected World, for which three subthemes were identified: business processes for connecting people, connecting intelligent objects to business processes and connecting information/data/knowledge to business processes. The 17 full and 1 short paper accepted for BPMDS were selected from 48 submissions and are grouped into topical sections on process execution support; improving usability of process models; social and human perspectives; new directions in process modeling; consistency, correctness and compliance; process and data mining; and process variability. The intention of EMMSAD is to solicit papers related to the field of information systems analysis and design including numerous information modeling methods and notations that are typically evolving. These ongoing changes significantly impact the way information systems, enterprises, and business processes are being analyzed and designed in practice. The 12 full papers accepted for EMMSAD were chosen from 19 submissions and are grouped into topical sections on fundamental issues in modeling; requirements and regulations; enterprise and software ecosystem modeling; information and process model quality; meta-modeling and domain specific modeling and model composition; and modeling of architecture and design.

The suitability of the standard UML notation for representation of relational database schema has been considered in this paper. Unlike the existing approaches using specialized notation (UML profiles), in this paper we propose an alternative approach for representation of relational database schema by standard UML class diagram. Apart from the analysis of the suitability of the isID (meta) attribute, we propose an alternative representation of composite keys by using class operations. The main idea of the proposed approach is based on the fact that the standardized order of operation parameters can be used to represent the order of key segments. The proposed approach is illustrated by a simple model in forward engineering of relational database.

Companies developing software are constantly striving to gain or keep their competitive advantage on the market. To do so, they should balance what to develop themselves and what to get from elsewhere, which may be software components or software services. These strategic decisions need to be aligned with business objectives and the capabilities and constraints of possible options. These sourcing options include: in-house, COTS, open source and outsourcing. The objective of this paper is to present an approach to support decision-makers in selecting appropriate types of origins in a specific case that maximizes the benefits of the selected business strategy. The approach consists of three descriptive models, as well as a decision process and a knowledge repository. The three models are a decision model that comprises three cornerstones (stakeholders, origins and criteria) and is based on a taxonomy for formulating decision models in this context, and two supporting models (property models and context models).

Insufficient mathematical skills of practitioners are hypothesized as one of the main hindering factors for the adoption of formal methods in industry. This problem is directly related to negative attitudes of future computing professionals to core mathematical disciplines, which are perceived as difficult, boring and not relevant to their future daily practices. This paper is a contribution to the ongoing debate on how to make courses in Logic and Formal Methods both relevant and engaging for future software practitioners. We propose to increase engagement and enhance learning by integrating 'hands-on' software engineering assignments based on cross-fertilization between software engineering and logic. As an example, we report on a pilot assignment given at a Logic and Formal Methods course for information Systems students at the University of Haifa. We describe the design of the assignment, students' feedback and discuss some lessons learnt from the pilot.

The construction of a business process simulation (BPS) model requires significant modeling efforts. This paper focuses on modeling the inter-arrival time (IAT) of entities, i.e. the time between the arrival of consecutive entities. Accurately modeling entity arrival is crucial as it influences process performance metrics such as the average waiting time. In this respect, the analysis of event logs can be useful. Given the limited process mining support for this BPS modeling task, the contribution of this paper is twofold. Firstly, an IAT input model taxonomy for process mining is introduced, describing event log use depending on process and event log characteristics. Secondly, ARPRA is introduced and operationalized for gamma distributed IATs. This novel approach to mine an IAT input model is the first to explicitly integrate the notion of queues. ARPRA is shown to significantly outperform a benchmark approach which ignores queue formation.

Organisations introduce changes in order to adapt themselves to the extremely changing context. These changes often impact information Technology (IT) and business domains. In most of the cases, the scope of the organisational elements in these domains requiring adaptation is not well defined, leaving out elements, this can lead to misalignment. Thus, it is important to know the impact scope with the purpose of performing a full adaptation. When reviewing the literature in the business-IT alignment research field, we found that there are no works providing support to deal with this aspect. However, there are several works in adjacent areas that have studied change management. In this paper, we report a systematic review of related work in these areas. From the review, we extract a set of clues applicable to the business-IT alignment field what results in a change analysis framework and a set of rules to estimate impact scope and potential adaptation. Framework elements and rules are illustrated by means of a small example.

A significant proportion of organizations delivering it services follows and combines some it management frameworks. At the organizational level, they often act in accordance with ITIL, the most used it service management (ITSM]) framework. At the project management level, a growing part of them are willing to work with agile methods. However, ITIL favours the Waterfall life cycle, such as in PRINCE2 or PMBOK, to the detriment of agile methods. Nevertheless, it is also assumed that ITSM best practices have to be adapted to, e.g., the environment, the kind of it services and the culture of it organizations. So there is a legitimate issue to raise: How can ITIL v.3 and agile project management coexist in an it organization? In this paper, we positively answer to this question by describing how to adapt ITIL v.3 when it is associated with scrum, the most popular agile method. First, we detail the current ITIL structure when a software implementation project is carried out. Then, we identify and explain which are the ITIL elements to modify in comparison with Waterfall-based project management methodologies. Lastly, we describe and illustrate eight interfaces between ITIL v.3 and scrum.

Improving the quality and efficiency of modeling is an important goal of many research approaches. A number of influence factors outside the modeling environment are investigated. To measure the influence objective measures are necessary. Therefore, this paper strives to create a foundation for such a measures, by measuring the influence of caffeine on the modeling performance. Choosing caffeine has the important advantage to provide an unbiased setting. The possible path of influence of caffeine on the modeling performance is analyzed. A research model is developed and the result of a pre-study are discussed.

Technical debt (TD) is a metaphor that is used by both technical and management stakeholders to acknowledge and discuss issues related to compromised design-time qualities. Until now, despite the inherent relevance of technical debt to economics, the TD community has not sufficiently exploited economic methods/models. In this paper we present a framework for managing interest in technical debt, founded on top of Liquidity Preference, a well-known economics theory. To tailor this theory to fit the TD context, we exploit the synthesized knowledge as presented in two recent studies. Specifically, in our framework, we discuss aspects related to technical debt interest, such as: types of TD interest, TD interest characteristics, and a proposed TD interest theory. Finally, to boost the amount of empirical studies in TD research, we propose several tentative research designs that could be used for exploring the notion of interest in technical debt practice.
