The "food safety" issue has concerned governments from several countries. The accurate monitoring of agriculture have become important specially due to climate change impacts. In this context, the development of new technologies for monitoring are crucial. Finding previously unknown patterns that frequently occur on time series, known as motifs, is a core task to mine the collected data. In this work we present a method that allows a fast and accurate time series motif discovery. From the experiments we can see that our approach is able to efficiently find motifs even when the size of the time series goes longer. We also evaluated our method using real data time series extracted from remote sensing images regarding sugarcane crops. Our proposed method was able to find relevant patterns, as sugarcane cycles and other land covers inside the same area, which are really useful for data analysis.

This chapter proposes a model how to setup IT supported interorganisational collaboration in the current world where IT and business collaboration is intertwined. businesses have been struggling to achieve supply chain integration for both technical and organizational reasons. This hinders effective collaboration with partners: vertical collaboration with suppliers and customers, as well as horizontal collaboration with competitors. This paper gives a literature overview of the current challenges within supply chain collaboration. The suggested Enterprise Connectivity Interface approach is inspired on the popular API model that enables connectivity between software systems. We reflect how such quick connectivity can be applied also on a business level.

In order to help businesses to communicate fruitfully, we present a solution based on ontology alignment for integrating business documents. We focus on detecting and resolving semantic conflicts encountered during the integration process due to different terminologies used in xCBL, cXML and RosettaNet. Our contribution is to benefit from research in the ontology alignment area and considered as empirical study to test if alignment solution can overcome the heterogeneity problems between business systems. As case study, we apply alignment on purchase order ontologies, a common task of the supply chain.

Traditional commercial and retail banks are under great pressure from new competitors. They must rise to the challenges of understanding their customer actions and behaviors, and be ready to meet their expectations even before they explicitly express them. But the ability to know customers' demands in nearly real-time requires the evolution of existing architectures to support the detection, notification, and processing of business events to manage business information streams. This paper describes a practical experience in evolving a core banking enterprise architecture by leveraging business event exploitation, and includes the definition of business events;the design of a reference architecture and its integration points with the legacy architecture, as well as the description of an initial governance approach. Furthermore, as the core banking architecture is a critical infrastructure we have evaluated the performance of the evolved architecture so as to understand whether or not it can meet the banks' quality levels.

Quality management is a philosophy of enterprise management that has been developed since the second half of the 20th century. Methods of quality management have been normalized in particular countries as well as globally. At present the most popular system of the normalization is the family of standards issued and updated by the International Organization for Standardization (so-called ISO 9000 quality management). The implementation and maintenance of the certified quality system is an expensive process burdened with a heavy workload and it does not always bring the expected results. Many authors underline the fact that one of the main reasons for the lack of effective operation of the quality system is the defectiveness of the information system, in particular they highlight problems with maintaining control over the required documentation, the quality process realization that is too labor-intensive, and an inadequate way of training employees. The objective of this paper is to define the requirements and the scope of IT tools that can solve the above mentioned problems. These tools are defined as Quality Management Support Systems (QMSS). The main aim of the first part of this paper is to review the most important ISO 9000 norms in the context of requirements that should be met by QMSS. The second part of this paper proposes the main functions and components of such systems and types of interfaces between them and other IT tools inside a given enterprise. In the conclusions of this paper possible implementation strategies of QMSS tools are presented.

For more than 10 years, research on service descriptions has mainly studied software-based services and provided languages such as WSDL, OWL-S, WSMO for SOAP, and hREST for REST. Nonetheless, recent developments from service management (e.g., ITIL and COBIT) and cloud computing (e.g. Software-as-a-Service) have brought new requirements to service descriptions languages: the need to also model business services and account for the multi-faceted nature of services. business-orientation, co-creation, pricing, legal aspects, and security issues are all elements which must also be part of service descriptions. While ontologies such as e(3) service and e(3) value provided a first modeling attempt to capture a business perspective, concerns on how to contract services and the agreements entailed by a contract also need to be taken into account. This has for the most part been disregarded by the e(3) family of ontologies. In this paper, we review the evolution and provide an overview of Linked USDL, a comprehensive language which provides a (multi-faceted) description to enable the commercialization of (business and technical) services over the web.

Schema matching and mapping are an important tasks for many applications, such as data integration, data warehousing and e-commerce. Many algorithms and approaches were proposed to deal with the problem of automatic schema matching and mapping. In this work, we describe how schema matching problem can be modelled and simulated as agents where each agent learn, reason and act to find the best match in the other schema attributes group. Many differences exist between our approach and the existing practice in schema matching. First and foremost our approach is based on the paradigm Agent-based Modeling and Simulation (ABMS), while, as far as we know, all the current methods do not use ABMS paradigm. Second, the agent's decision-making and reasoning process leverages probabilistic models (Bayesian) for matching prediction and action selection (planning). The results we obtained so far are very encouraging and reinforce our belief that many intrinsic properties of our model, such as simulations, stochasticity and emergence, contribute efficiently to the increase of the matching quality and thus the decrease of the matching uncertainty.

Clustering is a major data mining technique that groups a set of objects in such a way that objects in the same group are more similar to each other than to those in other groups. Among several types of clustering, density-based clustering algorithms are more efficient in detecting clusters with varied density and different shapes. One of the most important density-based clustering algorithms is DBSCAN. Due to the huge size of generated data by the widespread diffusion of wireless technologies and the complexity of big data analysis, new scalable algorithms for efficiently processing such data are needed. In this chapter we are particularly interested in using traffic data for finding congested areas in a city. For this purpose, we developed a new distributed and efficient strategy of DBSCAN algorithm that uses MapReduce to detect dense areas based on the input parameters. We conducted experiments using real traffic data of a brazilian city, Fortaleza, and compared our approach with the centralized and the MapReduce-based approaches. Our preliminary results confirmed that our approach is scalable and more efficient than the other ones. We also present an incremental version of DBSCAN considering the MapReduce version of it.

Designing logical architectures for cloud computing environments can be a complex endeavor, moreover when facing ill-defined contexts or insufficient inputs to requirements elicitation. Existing solutions are no longer enough to embrace challenges brought by complex scenarios and multi-stakeholder realities, as in Ambient Assisted Living ecosystems. As new concepts and cross-domain solutions emerge, these problems are tackled by connecting evermore the world of requirements and architectures, of business and technology, through service-oriented approaches. This due, we propose to extend the Four-Step-Rule-Set (4SRS) method, which has proven successful in generating a proper candidate logical architecture for an information system in ill-defined contexts, to a Service-Oriented Architecture approach for greater business integration, flexibility, and agility, by using the SoaML language. We present the result of a demonstration project, based in an industrial live setting where the 4SRS-SoaML reshaped method was applied, by generating the architectural participants, and respective channels of services and requests.

While affect plays a similar fundamental role in both, electronic and face-to-face negotiations, the expression of emotions in computer-mediated communication differs considerably from face-to-face settings. The aim of this experimental study is to analyze how the systematic use of emoticons - facilitated with software - affects negotiation behavior in alternative computer-mediated negotiation settings. With a 2 x 2 design comparing system-induced emoticon use with a text-only condition in synchronous chat or asynchronous e-mail mode we isolate effects of emoticons in these different communication settings. Results show that emoticons are used in different functions, i.e. mainly to supplement and support text messages and less often to mitigate its content. Furthermore, emoticon support increases the communication of positive affect in asynchronous negotiations while it decreases communication of negative affect and distributive negotiation behavior in synchronous negotiations. These findings propose that advancing communication quality via contextualization of affective information in negotiation support systems is promising.
