The web browser has become a central workspace for knowledge workers, where they make use of cloud-based applications to access and store their information. While this solution helps reduce the difficulty of syncing information between our numerous devices, it reintroduces and proliferates faults of the desktop, particularly information fragmentation. information fragmentation is an increasingly important issue, as cloudbased applications typically silo their data, resulting in a replication of storage and organization in the absence of a unifying structure. To probe whether knowledge workers encounter information fragmentation and in what manner, we created Contextinator, a tool that assists in coordinating data for web-based projects. Contextinator provides a method for providing the centralized, unifying structure that cloud based storage makes difficult. Our findings contribute insight into the need for, and appropriateness of, projects as a unifying structure for the web. Our results point to two types of projects that we term 'preparatory' and 'opportunistic' based on when and for what reason users create them. We discuss the design of our system, the results of our mixed-method evaluation, and our observations about information fragmentation on the web.

The ability to respond to change is an ongoing concern in information systems engineering. Designing flexible and adaptable information technology (IT) solutions is challenging due to difficulties in identifying and predicting adaptation needs influenced by environmental changes and enterprise competitive positioning. In this paper, we draw upon theories in strategic management, particularly conceptions of dynamic capabilities that deal with sustainable advantage, to identify and represent enterprise requirements. This research enables analysis of enterprise transformation by modeling coupling and alignment between IT and organizational capabilities using the i* framework. Potential inflexibilities and impact of changes are studied with analysis of dependency propagations. A hypothetical case using experiences from SOA and BPM implementations demonstrates use of the proposed modeling constructs.

Data Integration (DI) is the problem of combining a set of heterogeneous, autonomous data sources and providing the user with a unified view of these data. Integrating data raises several challenges, since the designer usually encounters incompatible data models characterized by differences in structure and semantics. One of the hardest challenges is to define correspondences between schema elements (e.g., attributes) to determine how they relate to each other. Since most business data is currently stored in relational databases, here present a declarative and formal approach to specify 1-to-1, 1-m, and m-to-n correspondences between relational schema components. Differently from usual approaches, our (CAs) have semantics and can deal with outer-joins and data-metadata relationships. Finally, we demonstrate how to use the CAs to generate mapping expressions in the form of SQL queries, and we present some preliminary tests to verify the performance of the generated queries.

Enterprises are complex live organisms of humans and networked machines including diverse types of computational devices. Enterprise interoperability promotes the interaction between companies based in the interoperability between such companies and between devices and services inside the company. Knowledge management is another important aspect that is extensively observed in the dynamic enterprise ecosystem. It is understandable that studies make different types of assessment for machines and people. In this sense we can ask on the interest of studying humans along machines in the chain of collaboration inside the Enterprise Interoperability Ecosystem. What we propose is to establish measures that promote interoperability between computational devices and humans, at the same time that we can promote interoperability between humans using computational devices to interact between each other.

Research collaboration in a globalized world has become one of the most important challenges for higher-education today. Collaboration between researchers all over the world is still an intricate and difficult challenge, which is the motive for this study that aims at filling this gap in the field of social science research. Based on the review of the literature, we propose a conceptual framework for designing a cyberinfrastructure to promote the collaboration among researchers across institutions. We present an example to illustrate the application of the framework that supports international collaboration between a research laboratory in a developed country and its partners in developing countries. Future work and research directions are also suggested in order to apply and extend the framework at a broader scale.

For over a decade, dedicated E-markets have been facilitating globally distributed systems development by enhancing the traditionally high-risk global sourcing processes. At the same time, the success and potential of E-markets for sourcing project globally can be questioned, as E-markets embody a variety of temporal, geographical and socio-cultural gaps. To study the effectiveness of the mechanisms offered by the E-markets, we ran a field experiment in which four development teams worked for 10 weeks to have a software development product designed, programmed and tested by remote developer(s) using an E-market. Three out of the four teams managed to deliver a successful product within time and budget. This result exceeded our expectations and contradicts the critical observations and opinions in several blogs and news articles. We find that for effective e-Market sourcing a skilled customer team with competences including vendor selection, software contracting, software requirements specification, development methods, cross-cultural and virtual communications, use of various cloud based tools, frequent functional and non functional testing are necessary.

The considerations presented in this position paper provide a starting point for incorporating model representations on additional perception channels, e.g., by using audio, into the concrete syntax specification of modeling languages. As it turns out, this cannot be done inside the frameworks of existing concrete syntax specification approaches, but first means to question the state-of-the-art of treating concrete syntax definitions as static mapping structures, and subsequently requires to widen the understanding of what concrete syntax is to an operative view on how humans interact with models.

In this paper we extend the additive multi-attribute utility model to incorporate the concept of veto in a group decision-making context. Moreover, trapezoidal fuzzy numbers are used to represent the relative importance of criteria for each DM, and uncertainty about the alternative performances is considered by means of intervals. Although all DMs are allowed to provide veto values, the corresponding vetoes are effective for only the most important DMs. They are used to define veto ranges. Veto values corresponding to the other less important DMs are partially taken into account, leading to the construction of adjust ranges. Veto and an adjust function are then incorporated into the additive model, and a fuzzy dominance matrix is computed. A dominance measuring method is then used to derive a ranking of alternatives for each DM, which are then aggregated to account for the relative importance of DMs.

The notion of Connected Communities is evolving from widespread use of social media and networks and represents an emerging paradigm for online connectivity, collaboration and information usage where the basis of interaction is between individual human participants with shared motives in a specific context. Traditional BPM practices operate on the basis of a common frame of reference with regard to overall business strategy and the constituent activities, and makes similar assumptions with respect to human participants in those processes. This paper reviews the implications of digital connectedness between human actors in a process-oriented context, surveys potential community archetypes and outlines core characteristics of connected communities and their significance in a broader BPM context.

Technical debt represents the situation in a project where developers accept compromises in one dimension of a system in order to meet urgent demands in other dimensions. These compromises incur a "debt", on which "interest" has to be paid to maintain the long-term health of the project. One of the elements of technical debt is documentation debt due to under-documentation of the evolving system. In this exploratory study, our goal is to examine the different aspects of developers' motivation to document code. Specifically, we aim to identify the motivating and hindering aspects of documentation as perceived by the developers. The motivating aspects of code documenting we find include improving code comprehensibility, order, and quality. The hindering aspects include developers' perception of documenting as a tedious, difficult, and time consuming task that interrupts the coding process. These findings may serve as a basis for developing guidelines toward improving documentation practices and encouraging developers to document their code thus reducing documentation debt.
